12 million strong...dang that's a lot of people!

http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/world-of-warcraft/1126353p1.html

Lots of people have claimed they have been bleeding members, but it seems they have been growing after some set backs initially with the whole china situation.

Also, their subscriber definition:

World of Warcraft's Subscriber Definition

World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees' territories are defined along the same rules.BlizzardSubscriberDefinition

It surely is a lot, but I cant help but wonder their revenue must be down a lot. 3 years ago it was at 11 million and the article said the increase was due to China getting WoW. China definetely doesn't pay $15 a month. They should break down the number by regions. I bet N.A., Europe, and Aus have all declined.

I'm going to guess at least 500,000 - 1,000,000 players come back for Cataclysm. I'm thinking this is going to be the new TBC by looks of the beta.

No, they said it was due to China getting Wrath of the Lich King....they had WoW in China previously (although some interruptions) but there's some kind of publishing thing causing problems for them for the past couple year (which is why WotLK was delayed so long). Either way you are correct Chinese don't pay $15/mo...I think they actually pay by the hour or something.

They deliberately wait until an expansion is released in another territory and people resubscribe to release their numbers. They never give the numbers unless they are up since the last time they announced subscriber numbers. Of course, Chinese subscriptions also work differently. Oh marketing departments, you amuse me. :P Anyway, that's a ridiculous number of people. I don't get how people aren't sick of the game yet...

There's no way that there's 12 million subscribers, the game has been bleeding people for a long time now because there's absolutely **** all to do. They have to be including trial accounts or something

I got sick of it.....after 5 years. I bet most of the people currently playing were not in it since the beginning. Its probably still somewhat new to them.
