http://www.bit-tech.net/news/gaming/2010/10/11/blizzard-bans-singleplayer-cheaters/1

To sum it up, Blizzard is banning people who use cheats/trainers in the singleplayer portion of the game. One player got a 14 day band for using a trainer against an AI only offline mp match. Blizzard claims that this is within the legal bounds of the EULA. I can't link to the original article due to GS, but go to the BT link and then get the original from there.

Probably because you can abuse it for Achievment Points.

If they can detect trainers and third party cheats, they should just disable the achievement feature instead of banning/suspending the user. Obtaining achievement unfairly seems to be the main concern anyway.

Trainers and third party cheats are against the EULA afaik.

Why would you care about cheats in SP anyway? The campaign is only challenging on Brutal, and legit cheats are available for all to see and use.

(lol @ cinematics menu, istant win, 0 cost units and 5k gas cheats, brilliant work Blizzard  )

first, it is not a ban...it is a suspension

second, you signed the EULA, and you are getting an unfair advantage over other players.

I think it is justifiable

achievements are anonline aspect...they are tracked via your account and stuff, it is part of the multiplayer area of the game.

I agree the ideal thing to do would be to disable the achievements or whatever, but I do not really blame Bliz for doing this

I remember when there was talk about this on the SC2 forum. Im happy that they do ban people that cheat and abuse. If it was just for "offline" mode with no achivments or anything then sure. But its not.

They are cheating by playing in offline mode and then completing the achivments there. Then when they connect again they will get the achivments for their multiplayer account.

None would care if they did it with no gain or anything. But they are knowingly using it to gain achivments in this case. Like i said i cant feel sorry for them:(

Had you read, it was originally noted that the first player was suspended due to Single player vs AI .... And imho this is just another reason in how achivecraps have destoyed PC modularity ... now we cant even mod the game alas we may be breaking TOU :O ... i miss old total conversion mods that added a wealth of original gameplay to your initial purchase.... NO USING 3RD PARTY SOFTWARE ... oh snap there goes all the HL1 mods -_-

What I fail to understand is how anyone can be interested in something like achievements. Most of them demand for the gamer to play in a very dumb ways in order to unlock stupid records. You can also see in multiplayer games how sometimes the achievements hurt the teamwork when a player is focused into unlock some achievements/belts/medals instead of helping the team to win the match. Absurd.

THIRD PARTY cheats are not allowed.

SC2 "natively" has its own cheat codes.

The whole thing is just sad.

Sad that someone would want to cheat themselves on (what I hear to be) such a great game.

Sad that a company would ban/suspend them for cheating on the multiplayer offline, AI skirmish.

Sad that both would do it over some MEANINGLESS game achievement!

I can't help but shake my head at what grows upon this rock.

You mean completely remove the SP achievements? Whoah... let's not get out of hand here. I mostly play SP and actually like the achievements. :P Anyway, I remember Mechwarrior 3 having a dishonorable status at the end of the level whenever the player uses an in-game cheat. Actually.... it was in the option menu to activate and wasn't a cheat per se- it was more of a game enhancement (ie no overheat shutdown etc...). If the person cheats/enhances, you couldn't proceed with the campaign unless the cheat/enhancement was off. I think this could be implemented in SC2 easily - have a dishonorable status (just for that game, not an account label) and not give the player achievement/reward.

Because this may be only the start In fact it isn't - online connection required, banning third party trainers, policing custom content. To qoute David Icke (yes him) its the "totalitarian toe-step". This is just another move that will eventually lock up the modularity of the pc platform and force the user to rely solely on the dev for content, updates, mods, fixes, etc. But don't worry! Devs/Pubs ALWAYS have the consumers best interests in mind.

...who are you to say how people should have their fun? Sure you and I and the majority probably don't have interest in trainers, but it seems a bit farfetched to suspend someone from playing just because they are modding the single player portion of the game, which has no quantitive effect on your rank class or match-up choices.

They're modifying Blizzard's product and it's been stated over and over that it isn't allowed. They only have themselves to blame.

That is just the thing... There are Blizzard made cheats... You simply wont get any achivments when you do this. They did cheat with a trainer / hack to get around the "achivment require online" part.

The fact that people defend cheaters make me go "O.O". Oh and if you just wish to try silly things there something known as the galaxy editor (map editor) where you can do about anything you want.

This makes me even happier I have stopped supporting Blizzard in the past 6 months altogether. I won't buy anymore of their games and I won't give them another dollar. Activision is destroying them and I won't be a part of it. Banning/Suspending people for cheating in single player is stupid. They are going way to far

To be honest I have absolutely no idea how the SC2 achievements thing works as I have not played the game. I just am not a fan of Blizz anymore. I spent around 5 years playing WoW off and on but over the years I have slowly started to not like them as a company. I finally got fed up with them and quit and moved on to other games

I think people are complaining because in their opinion that particular rule is dumb. It has nothing to do with the ability to read, everyone is typing here so no need to make nonsensical 'points'. [typing=ability to read, if you didn't catch my drift]

So they're using trainers in SP and then getting achieverments....so what? It's obvious that the company (Blizzard) reserves the right to disable your product at any time for whatever reason, but this is excessive. I don't support either side, as both are pathetic at the moment.

Using third party hacks (Yes I called them hacks because that is what they are, cheat is not the term to be used) is against the EULA and Blizzard has all the right to ban or suspend a user for using hacks regardless if it was during the singleplayer portion or not. Why you ask? Because the Singleplayer portion affects the online portion of the game thus giving these hackers an advantage (Whether it be with Achievements or whatever) over other players. Suspensions and bans are rightly handed out in such cases.

This has piqued my interest. Exactly what kind of tangible advantage do achievements give? I've never played the game and probably never will (not a fan of RTS) but, if there are some kind of real advantages to be gained in multi-player from these cheats, then I retract my earlier statement and the bans, I suppose, are fair.

BUT, if the achievements are just some silly chest-beating measuring stick (like they are in pretty much every other game) and they have no real impact on the outcome of a multi-player match then I stand by my original statement that this is a bush-league move on Blizzard's part.

So, do the achiements give better units or something or are they just window dressing?
