OK, so I have a laptop that can't quite run Half-Life 2 and CS:S, so I jumped on the chance to purchase the Counterstrike Anthology 1 package at a local big-box retailer for $9.99. I got the box, 2 discs, and an insert with an activation key, so I should have been ready to rock n' roll, right?
Wrong! After installing the games from the discs and creating my Steam account (this was two days ago, mind you), I could not launch CS because Steam had to "wait for my credit card transaction" to complete processing before my account and games could be activated...WTF? I purchased the game at a RETAIL store, not via Steam. A reply to a post that I created in Steam's support forums has yet to generate anything other than an automated response saying that my post is being processed. In the meantime, I can't play what I paid for, and the retail store won't take the game back because it is now open-box. Anyone else have this problem?
Needless to say, when I do get a machine capable of playing HL2 I won't bother with it, or any other games that require Steam to activate and play. I've heard nightmare stories previous to my own about getting games to work with Steam, and now I can commiserate with those others. Steam, quite simply, is broken.
