This would not happen for many years and developers will try and keep install size as low as possible. Installing 20+ GB of data will take long and then you will have to deal with the long load times. On the Ps3 the the blu ray disc is mostly used up by the lossless audio which isn't used in PC games. Most of the games are not really that big.

no, not for a long time, dvds are cheap and easy to manufacture, if you were gaming back then, you'll remember pc games coming on 4 or 5 (or more!) cds, we're really only just breaking the 2 DVD line, there's no honest reason to need to bump up to blu-ray, it's not better, it's just bigger - and since pc games run off installs, most pc games can use an install dvd, and a play dvd, and it hardly affects the gamer

and how many people actually own blu-ray drives? publishers would significantly hurt their ownincome by restricting who couldbuy their game- and since microsoft is backing hd-dvd, they sure won't push any publishers to use of the format

blu-ray is no better, really, just bigger - and we, as pc gamers, do not need it - not for a long time - blu-ray, or hd-dvd, or equivalent will eventually come, but right now, there's no need for it, and there just aren't enough blu-ray players in peoples' homes, never mind blu-ray drives in peoples' pcs

maybe by 2012 or so, assuming it becomes an industry standard, we may start to see blu-ray games, but we'll see 2 and 3+ DVD set games before then, they're cheaper to manufactureand more widely supported by gamers

I sure hope not. Threeo reasons:

1. Im not ready to pay 60+ dollars for a PC game. And yes, thats how much it would cost due to the increased cost to produce the product. Not to mention it would be "New blue-ray tech bla blah blah" so they would extort us a bit.

2. Hard drive space may be a bit cheaper than it used to be, but getting 500+ gigs of space is still expensive. Not to mention installing and configuring hard drives is, at the least, a big hassle. If games start coming on disks that support 20+GB of space (and thus need 30GB of hard disk space for instal) we are all going to run out of space. I like having six or seven games on my 250GB hard drive.

3. Blu-ray drives are EXPENSIVE! Ive only seen the writers on newegg, but theyre like 800 dollars or so. Not worth it.

Blu-Ray discs should be used only for movies and HD shows, not for computer gaming. Besides our video cards are already pretty good at delivering the eye candy.;)Directx10!

Not really much point.

The advantage of the Blu-Ray disc is its increased storage capacity. But with PC games you have to install them on the harddrive anyway. So it doesn't really matter how many DVDs a game takes up.

Blu-Ray would just be an unnecessary cost.

As others have said, it isn't necessary at this point and the cost doesn't justify making Blu-Ray disc and buying a Blu-Ray drive for your computer.

Why would PC's ever adopt Blu Ray drives? Services like Steam are showing that having no media format is a much better and cheaper way to go.

well. someone once told us that we don't need more than 4mbs of memory. or something like that. was it gates? i don't know.

and computers for every home were considered absurd. no one really wanted the internet 13 years ago.

and now look where we are now.

demands will be higher. people will want more and more, better and better (we have the ads to blame :p).

technology grows. and it's only going to escalate faster. perhaps we are now at the peak of the graph? no one knows. So expect the unexpected.

I found it really straightfoward the first time i did it, last year i think. Believe me, its extremely handy to have lots of hard drive space, it means you can put so much stuff on for easy access, and not have to use dvds/cds. It also means you can have tons more games installed at once, its been a long time since ive had to uninstall anything i felt i might still want at some point.

But overall, as everyone else says, theres just no point in blueray games for pc. Once its all installed, its all there. I dont care if games start getting that big, multiple dvds will be fine. Blueray (or hd-dvd) might become the standard in maybe 3 or 4 years(i think longer), but theyll still support dvd for a long time to come. In fact, if stuff like steam continues so strongly, they may never bother to make the change.

Probably not any time soon.

1. Blu-Ray is not much of improvement over DVD as you say. I know it is better but not when you take all factors into account for and against ot.

2. The PC indsuty isn't disc dependant like the console industy is because PC games install directly to an HDD and only use the disc for minimal functions. That could change, but why would anyone want it to? HDD have faster acess than DVD drives and even faster than Blu-Ray drives which are even slower than the medium they are trying to replace.

3. Cost, again since PC gamers are not disc dependant who cares if our games come on multiple discs is it is cheaper to do so. Plus you are welcome to try all the games that come on multiple DVD's on the PC. I'm sure there are a few nut most muti disc games that I own were suing CD's instead.

4. Cost Part 2. Blu-Ray drives are still pretty expensive for little to no gain. I mean you can get a DVD with the abilty to write for what liek $50?

So yeah in order for those to become common place they would have to be considered a standard and although the PC industry by way of user-base and I just don;t see too many users buying a Blu-Ray drive when DVD works just fine. The only other way is if they outright firced to accept it. That worked fior the PS3 only because you had no choice but you can bet that if Sony had offered a $300 model that only had a DVD drive that would have sold and probably 1000x better than the $600 model.

I said this before and I will say it again the mass market doesn't care about Blu-Ray or HD-DVD for that matter and are quite happy using DVD. Yeah you see those sales figures about which of the new formats is outselling the other but notice you do not see how they are stacking up against DVD's and the reason being is, they are not.

i'm not sure if that will ever happen, downloads are going to be the new thing and by the time pc gamers are ready for blu-ray downloads might be the standard, though having a hard drive made out of super high capacityblu-raydisks coluld be a posssiblity

No.

There is absolutely no need.

First of all, All PC games are installed to a hard drive, and hard drives are capable of having FAR more space and FAR faster data transfer speeds then Blu-Ray or any optical media for the matter....so space isn't an issue when playing or making PC games. Like others have said, PC games aren't disc dependent like console games are, PC games have long moved into a far better digital realm for transferring and recieving game data with services like Steam and D2D.

Second....Consoles need things like DVD and Blu-Ray because with console games the game is actually played from the game and is uncompressed. With PC games it's a whole different ball game, like I said, PC games are installed to the hard drive....and even when you have a PC game on CD or DVD, the data is highly compressed until it's installed to the hard drive. Since the data on a PC game disc is highly compressed, a DVD is more then suitable. In fact, a DVD of highly compressed data holds more information then a Blu-Ray of uncompressed data.

Third, as for getting the game on the actual computer....again....Blu-Ray is not needed. Digital Distribution is more likely to be the primary way for PC gamers to get their games onto their computers in the future, especially since it's cheaper for developers and can be cheaper for gamers for the same exact data.

Finally....PC games have long since been above the 2GB mark in terms of space, yet it is only since really last year that we've seen games on DVD become common...and this pretty much goes back to the fact that how much data a disc can hold really doesnt matter since in the end the game is installed to the hard drive anyway. Look how long it took DVD to get adopted, cause really prior to a couple of years ago, CDs were still suitable for holding the compressed data of PC games.

At this point I don't think Blu-Ray will ever be adopted by PC games developers, since at this point digital distribution straight to hard drive is a far better and more efficient delivery method for PC games in the future....with digital distribution the sky is literally the limit in how much data you want to transfer, as well as being the more economically feasible solution for both developers and even gamers in the long run.

This isn't just for PC games....this is for all forms of media entertainment.

If...and that's a big IF...Blu-Ray is ever used on PC, it'll be used for primarily for backing up data...that's pretty much it....and even then it may not be used. In the future we'll most likely see USB Flash Drives that are capable of holding more data then any Blu-Ray disc, and is much smaller for carrying around. We already have USB flash drives that are literally smaller then a car key that are capable of holding up to 16 GB.

it will be a long time before gamemaker are requiring the consumer to have a HDDVD/BLU-ray drive

Blue Ray is the future, but for pc gaming that future is still far away I think. From the moment when games come on 3 or 4 DVD's the publishers will start considering Blue Ray.

I hope developers don't use BlueRay. Using BlueRay might make them more wasteful of space and less efficient which would be bad for gamers with a lot of games or a smaller hard-drive. It would also probablybe easier to scratch? Maybe somebody could answer that but if so i really don't want them.

They havn't even started using multiple DVD disks yet, what makes you think that anyone would even consider using something that has a $400 reader and $20 media disk... Just look at how long it took for the transition for PC games to go from CD to DVD.

I really wish the companies would have agreed on one format, be it HD-DVD or Blu Ray, prior to launching their products. It really is the VHS v. Betmax war all over again, and in the end the customers lose out if they get behind the losing product.

Idunno, guess its just me but cracking open the case and putting in a hard drive is a PITA. I'd rather change my car's oil, clean my room, or do something else than do that. I am pretty bad with tiny electronic things, however...I tend to smash them with my giant meathooks and sausage-fingers :?

It might not be the best for the consumer, but that might rid of most piracy, as the files are so large most people won't even bother.

But if it is used in the future where many people have large harddrives and blazing internet speeds commonly. It might not prevet piracy that much still.

it's not necessary right now. it's cheaper to have 5 dvd's even 10, than a blu ray. anyway, they can just compress the data on the dvd, and uncompress it to the hard drive. you dont really need much disk space.
