I just thought i would post this because im constantly observing sony and microsoft fanboys arguing over the recent developments in the format war. Microsoft was in a win-win situation between the formats. Sony had much more to lose IF Blu-ray lost.

what does that have to do with blu ray not existing without MS? that just talks about MS keeping the option for blu ray open, and how they are committed to hd-dvd. which is obsolete information considering the fact that hd-dvd is now dead. this is system wars junk anyhow.

because both Blu-ray and HD-DVD uses VC-1 compression, a technology developed soley by microsoft. if you would read it with your eyes instead of thru those fanboy goggles, you would see that

actually HD-dvd and bluray are video formats. not systems. so no this is not a system wars discusion. but yeah MS has nothing to do with Blu-ray. Sony created blu-ray, thats is a known fact. saying MS developed it would be a flat out lie. It's like saying Pepsi wouldnt exist without Coke. Or even saying sony wouldnt exist w/o microsoft. you cant be sure of that. playing the IF game is kinda stupid.

VC-1 is hardly the only compression technology out there, even if along with MPEG-4 its one of the better ones. Please think before you post.

I agree. You need to calm it down dude...........

MS has lost because it's stock of HD-DVD addons and its financial backing are now nullified. Creating a Blu-Ray addon would not reverse that and make them winners, it would simply be a new investment opportunity with new potential profit.

Which doesn't prove your point any better than the last article. Microsoft isn't even a member of the BDA feel free to check for yourself.

i understand that Microsoft isnt on the BDA, i was just saying that Blu-ray uses Microsoft's technology. and that it really doesnt matter that blu-ray won because microsoft makes money from blu-ray as well due to the BDA licensing the VC-1 technology for each disc. i wasnt trying to be fanboyish, just to bring some truth to the situation because people seem to thing that a blu ray win means the end of the 360, or that its gonna magically make the ps3 #1

Well, yes and no from me. Yes, the success of Blu-Ray over HD-DVD doesn't mean the death of Xbox360, in fact, it is directly irrelevant which you correctly pointed out. No in that MS still get a backlash from all the investment they made in HD-DVD and their HD-DVD addons which are now down the tube.

The entire premise of this thread (or at least what it seems to be based on the title) is entirely false. The OP is in some respects correct, but Microsoft has less to gain with Blu-Ray than they did with HD-DVD (which also had HDi and other Microsoft tech running it).

And MPEG was developed by Apple, so are you saying that DVDs won't exist without Apple?

Your posts makes no sense.

VC-1 doesn't belong to Microsoft. Quite a few companies have patents included in VC-1 and the actual royalties are usually paid to MPEG-LA. It's an open SMPTE standard.

Even so, VC-1 encoded movies only make up about 23% of BD discs sold. Most are AVC and that number is actually increasing.

Actually, this post would have made more sense if you would have said something like, Sony should be kissing Microsoft's feet for not putting a HD DVD drive in the XBox. Considering the year head start, market penatration and attach rates I think we would be buying combo disc right now instead of Bluray for the media center and SDVD for the car.

Toshiba blew it, smart move would have been , Microsoft we will take a bath on the hardware and sell you the HD DVD drive at the same price we will sell you a DVD drive for your unit.

A win-win situtation? Well good thing they released an HD DVD drive for the 360 because I can just imagine how much money those are raking in now that HD DVD has gone down the crapper.

This doesn't even make any sense, can you clarify please? Give a frame of reference or something...
