Hey GS hardware people: i'm looking to upgrade my GPU from a 4850 (512) to a 5850. I'm wondering, however, if my CPU will get in the way, or if I possibly don't understand the concept of bottlenecking. My rig has a Q6600 @ 2.4 (not, nor will, overclock), 4GB ram, yadda yadda. Am I cool to make the vid card upgrade? Thanks!

It should be fine, if it does bottleneck it wouldn't really be all that much honestly, nothing to worry about.

sure overclocking or getting a faster cpu will yield slightly higher frames... But a stock q6600, should be actually a good combination paired with a hd5830 5850..

Though I wouldn't upgrade your GPU past the 5850 without either overclocking, or getting a slightly faster cpu.

no problem, for a while i was running dual overclocked 8800gt in SLI mode, with only a cpu of amd dual core 6000+, I now have same gpu setup, but with a phenom II 945 as my cpu, and about to upgrade GPU setup to an hd6series..

I also recommend holding off on your GPU upgrade, till after the hd6 series launches, you may find a decent price cut on the hd5 series that you are looking to buy.

HD 6 series launches in a few months. (usually warrants a price reduction of their older lineup hd5 series)
