I decided to give my basement PC an overhaul since I had a lot of spare cash. On my current PC, I'm running an E8400 @ 3.6GhZ, 9800GTX (overclocked), and 4GB of RAM. For my basement I ordered an E7200 (which I'll OC to 3.0GHZ), a Sapphire 4850, and 2GB of RAM. I haven't used an ATI card since my 9600 from years ago. I've heard nothing but bad things about ATI since then. Now for the 4850, I've heard about overheating, crashing, and other odd problems. Some people have told me that I should never install the CCC - yet other people told me I need to install it so I can turn up the fan. I have no issue turning the fan up to 100% if need be. How about overclocking? Is it too hot to be overclocked?

You need CCC to be able to turn the fanspeed higher in a profile. Depending on your ambient temperature and even a little airflow, you could just run it straight out of the box with just the driver with no problems. It will be hot. I think most idle 70-80C without adjusting the fan speed. Overclocking, I have no clue how hot it will get. The real issue seems to be the faulty driver or CCC which MAY cause BSOD's, although no one is sure yet as to what it exactly is, only that it exists and is hopefully being ironed out. Some say it is CCC, but on ATi's website, people have said they installed just the driver and they are still getting random crashes.

I had crashes in TF2 until I set the Catalyst AI in CCC to disabled or advanced, the standard seems to be crashing it. I also turned all settings that I could to "application controlled." It has fixed my specific crash. I haven't even installed any other games yet, so I can't speak for the stability of it with others.

i got an asus 4850 and i have had no problems with it so far. the temperature can get a bit high, but the fan is good and keeps it at around 50. i have had no crashes with it, and the fan works fine. the asus smartdoctor software that comes with it is pretty good too, lets you overclock, and adjust fan speeds and stuff.

So I take it the card doesn't overclock very well?

It's a great card. There aren't any problems with the driver aside from the blue screens people are reporting. I've been getting them too, but they are pretty random, just save your game often til they iron it out in the driver. Other than that I've owned an ATI 3D Rage II, an ATI 3D Rage Turbo, an ATI Radeon 9550 (underclocked 9600), an ATI Radeon X1300pro, an ATI Radeon X1900XT, and now 2 ATI Radeon HD 4870s in Crossfire. Gotta say, I've grown fond of ATI as a company and they haven't let me down yet, (don't think I'm one sided though, Nvidia offers quality products as well, but this generation the price/performance of ATI is hard to beat!).

It overclocks fine if you increase the fan speed, which is too slow by default.

If you push a certain spot on the card cookies will come out... That E7200 should have no trouble hitting 4ghz like its 8 series siblings.

Well, I won't have any extra cooling solutions other than extra fans and Arctic Silver.

And I'm on XP. If I experience crashes, I'll be pretty pissed.

Those temps seem iffy to me. I guess the Antec 900 is better than a Thermaltake Armor+ full-tower because I idle at 53C, load at 58. And I have two fans blowing towards my card. Hmm.. Unless I'm not mistaken, you must live in Canada or Minnesota where it's nice and cold. I live in southern California where it's either warm or hot. I mean, 40C and 53C is a huge difference. And it doesnt look like I'm hosting a BBQ party in my Thermaltake armor.

The Antec 900 is badass. I idle at 38C and load 50-55C with 50% fanspeed. I have all the 80mm fans blowing inward, with the 120mm big boy at the top exhuasting all the hot air. Best $80 bucks I've spent on a case by far.

It doesn't have to be one constant fan speed. 35-40% is more than enough at idle, and activate another profile with 50-55% speed when you're gaming. That way the card is silent when you're not playing a game.
