This is going to be for a 10 year old boy (girlfriends son). He is just starting to get into PC gaming and is coming from a P2 233 with 256mb ram.. Literally... Right now he mostly plays XBOX but he shows a lot of interst in PC gaming so I thought I would put him together a pc with spare parts I have. So this is what I've got so far: AMD Athlon 64 3700+ Socket 754 (fastest 754 out there I guess) ATI X800 XT 256MB Video Card Soltek K8AN2E-GR Motherboard 1GB Corsair XMS DDR 400 Ram 120GB WD Hard Drive 20" Widescreen LCD 1680x1050 Resolution Will this be ok for most games out now? He especially likes RPG's and Diablo like games (titan quest will be first I'm sure) How long would a system like this last? We definetely wont plan on maxing out all the grahpics and could probably upgrade the video card when better AGP options become available as well.

Yeah luckily he isn't into the shooters and all that, which tend to be the more demanding games The only thing that worries me is the native resolution of the monitor. Not sure the system can push out that res very well. haven't had a chance to try yet.

If I was 10 I'd be happy with that system, the only problem I could see is the lack of SM3 support, which some games are now requiring, R6 Vegas and Splinter Cell Double Agent are two that come to mind. More ram is always nice too. As for how long the system will last is hard to say, in the current config, I'm sure you would be able to find new games to play for the next 2 years. But that is just guess, depends on how fast PC start to require dual cores and DX10.

Yeah definetely, luckily though its the shooters that usually require the higher end systems. At least the monitor will outlast the PC, eventually we will get him a core 2 and a dx 10 card. But thats probably right around 2 years away.
