The reason for this is becaus Neither Windows Vista NOR windows XP will run my old games

Specs Amd Athlon XP 2600+

atleast 256MB Ram

20 Gig HDD

and i cant decide on either a Nvidia G Force MX 440 AGP 64MB or a Nvidia G Force FX 5200 128 MB PCI

thoughs?

Just because you are building a PC for windows 2000 doesn't mean that it has to be crap! How much are you trying to spend here?

Also xp can run most games one way or another . Dosbox scummvm are 2 of the most popular emulation programs that can help you play older dos games whiles most older windows games will run fine on xp Besides if you are gonna build an old for old games using windows 2000 not such a good idea. That OS wasnt exactly the most compatible OS when came out when comes to games and software due to the different architercture ( although majority of software was running on 2000 as well there were alot of games and apps that opposed problems) between the most popular windows 98 and the less popular windows2000 If you still want to build an older pc use windows ME or Windows 98

the games i have dont use DOS and they wont work on windows XP or Vista. i have tryied several Programs/patches and the backwords compatibility modes that come with windows. it still dose not work I tryied installing windows 98 and windows 2000 on a Virtual Machine i installed on my computer. the only thing thats keeping the games from working is the fact that there is no compatible drivers for the game on my new PC. so i need to build an Old PC with Old Parts and Old Drivers for the games to work

Dude, check a yard sale or goodwill. If you're just going to be running old games in Win 2000 I wouldn't spend more than $15-20.

I usually gut them for parts or give them away. I haven't found too many old games that can't be run using compatiblity mode. You could also set your PC up to dual boot.

What old games are you trying to run anyway?

If it works in Windows 2000, it should work in XP. Just use compatiblity mode if you have to, but really the two operating systems are almost identical.

I agree with above - its rather unusual for a game to work in 2000 and not XP, the two are very closely related. Of the two cards, I'd probably go with the FX5200, just because it is the (slightly) superior card. In most of those games, though, I doubt it matters THAT much.

I'd pick a athlon 2 x2 240, 4gb ram, radeon 4650 or maybe some old dx9 card just to make sure. win 2000 will run on any new hardware just fine.

perhaps due to say a core 2 quad or i7 + hardware over an hd 4670 which regretablly lacks windows 98/2000 drivers.
