Building Gaming Rig need help on parts!

Hey guys,

So i'm looking at upgrading my gaming rig, so far I have in mind is

Intel i7 9700k
Asus ROG Strix Z390-E Gaming Motherboard

I don't know what to get in terms of cooling fans and memory. I'd like 32GB of ram (overkill? probably). I already have a 1070 Ti and PSU is 850w. I'm in Canada so i'm buying off of Amazon or Newegg. I like Amazon tbh but whatever works. Budget 1200-1500 CAD. Don't really care for RGB if it'll save on price. I have a mid size tower.

I'm not too tech savvy so i'm asking you guys for some advice. If i'm missing something, let me know!

I wouldn't go for Intel, with that kind of budget go for a 3900X and a 570 motherboard. Excluding PSU and GPU I have the following listed for you using part picker as a general guide.

Low latency 3200MHz RAM is the sweet spot for Ryzen, so go for CAS14 Kit and a fast M.2 as a 1TB from WD Black or Samsung... That said I always recommend getting a separate drive for the OS and one for games/storage so go for a fast 500GB M.2 and a 1TB SSD(M.2).

Its up to you if you want 32GB ram you would need to drop down to a 3700X CPU to fit it in to your budget and honestly sacrifice any performance for RAM you will more than likely never use for gaming in the near future would be a travesty.

This is what I would do if it was my money.

Forget plain 8 core intel.... I would grab an Ryzen 3700x at the very least , If you dont plan on overclocking the cpu the stock prism cooler will be enough. Grab a X570 motherboard and get at least 3200mhz DDR4 with CAS14.

@04dcarraher: Really? I thought Intel was better? I currently have an AMD 9370 Viscera but was gonna switch to Intel for better gaming experience. Is Ryzen really better?

When it comes to stock clocks the new Ryzen 3000 series is only on average 5-10% slower in 1080p and less than 5% at 1440p vs intel's i9 9900k.

While you do have a few games like the farcry series where intel out paces Ryzen, its not the rule but the exception. Even still a 3700x is able to provide around 120 fps average with Farcry 5 where the 9th gen intel can get upto 20 fps more. Where any other well coded multithreaded game you really cant tell the difference both being stock.

Games are using more than 8 threads, so getting a plain 8 core without HT like the i7 9700 is not the smartest choice, IMO.

So grabbing an Ryzen 3700x or 3800x would be great upgrade for you. Having 8 cores and 16 threads will serve you better in the long run vs i7 9700k.

It's also worth pointing out do not get Ryzen 3800x, it's a waste and the 3700x will do the job nicely for the right price range.

It depends on where your getting the 3800x too, Ive seen 3800x cheaper than 3700x because of limited stock.
