I want to build a computer that i can easily upgrade in the future without having to change out mobo's and cpu's. I know just about nothing about either of them. I'm looking to get an AMD since i've only used intel in the past. What kind of motherboard and processor would perform the best for the money and be up-to-date for years to come? i want to keep the cost for the two items under or around $300

For AMD you want an AM3 motherboard. A decent AM3 mobo should cover you for a few years.

If you want a strong CPU go for the Phenom II X4 955.
