Looking for drop $1000 on a new machine. Games are important,. but I also do some graphic work - although nothing fancy. Pretty sure the gaming aspect should take care of anything else I plan on doing. I haven't built in years so I really would appreciate some opinions...

Also! If there is anything equivalent for cheaper - or better at the same price PLEASE let me know!

-MOST IMPORTANTLY!--- - Is there anything around the corner I should wait for?

Thanks!

Go with a better PSU. Are you buying from Newegg? Search for "OCZ Fatal1ty OCZ550FTY 550W ATX12V v2.2 / "

For a 470, you should probably get at least 650w.

If I was getting a 470, I'd probably get this one.

It just looks... well, see for yourself.

It's got pretty good reviews too.

I think it's a pretty good card. Much cheaper than a 5870, but also better.

I'd get a 6870 and a 650w PSU. You could also build an AM3 system for slightly cheaper.

Well I posted earlier asking i5 vs Phenom II X6 and people seemed to side with the i5 for games a bit more.

No difference. As you'll probably be playing @ 1080p the CPU is not as important as the GPU.

My bad, I've been in GTX 460 mode for the past few hours :P... as C_Rule said, go with at least 650W. There's this one which is a 700W for $79. But then there's this one which is $89 with only 650W but has a lot of amazing reviews.

Look at the phenom II x4's not the x6, the 6 core actually can see a drop off in games a little bit because most games dont know what to do with it. Something like a 955 is what most people like but sometimes you can get a 965 for cheaper but usually 955 is best price for the performance. The 6870 shows up between 4-10% less than the 470 in most benchmarks and above in a couple games, it also runs cooler and requires less power. The 470 overall is a more powerful card, but if you go AM3 its harder to find an SLI motherboard compared to Crossfire, unless you can get your hands on an Nforce, which newegg has.

After spending the last hour looking at post and review - I am starting to lean more towards AMD. (I always used them in the past)

I don't plan on giving up on Nvidia though. =)

No problem. As you can see, the 760 is better than the best(?) AMD CPU in nearly all of those tests at a much lower clock speed.

And the 760 only cost like $20 more.

Bit of a leap here, but...

If I wanted to go AMD and for a cheaper setuo, would be compatible with my build? (using a AMD processor)

Well, part of me wants to go out and get a $500 setup...and the other (less practical) half wants a $1000.

If you really want to save cash get an Athlon x4 640 + Gigabyte 870A-UD3 + 4GB Kingston Value Ram + 6870 (splurge here) as a base.

-MOST IMPORTANTLY!--- - Is there anything around the corner I should wait for?

yayitsjon

not sure when you plan to make the final purchase. but if you were to wait for anything at all, it'd be Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales.

and in reference to your most recent post. picking up some of these things on Black Friday/Cyber Monday could make for a great compromise with your $500 vs. $1000 struggle.

heck, you could possibly get that $1000 rig for less. getting similar power out of it while also getting it for cheaper. I mean, if you were able to snag that $1000 machine for $750-$800(which is also being very optimistic, so take care on that). I think you'd be in great hands.

what I'd do is come up with a few possibilties. 2 AMD setups and and 2 Intel setups. with 1 AMD shifting towards the $500, and the other with a $1000(or less if you see fit) and do the same thing with your two intel setups. and if those sales lean towards one more than the others, you pick up the rest of the parts you weren't able to get on sale.

Thats actually exactly what I am doing. Trying to get as much input on this build as I can. Been looking at black Friday deals a lot lately.

The 470 and 5870 are about equal in performance, but the 470 is like $100 cheaper. And on top of that, the 470 SOC runs a bit better than the reference 470, runs a lot cooler, still has plenty of OC headroom and is still much cheaper.

i would suggest you to get this instead i5. It is also a bit cheaper and better performer overall

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103894&Tpk=amd%20phenom%20ii%20x4%20970

and for mobo, chose any for the supported am3.

Ram is alright.

Graphics card is perfect, stick with it.

PSU-----------awesome.

Well if I venture to a higher end setup, I will most likely chose i5.

If I end up going a bit lower end, then AMD it is.

common, don't be silly. ph2 x4 970 be is a better overclocker and you too can unlock cores i.e quad to hexa core.

Hey, your mobo should be a supported core unlocker.

Stock versus stock the 5870 is the faster card more often than not. Yes, the GTX 470 is cheaper in most cases, but it's not better. It uses more power, usually runs hotter, and is slower.

The 5870 has lost much of it's appeal since the release of the 6870, however. I see what you're saying about the price/performance ratio of the GTX 470 currently being better than the 5870, but the card itself isn't better.

I've had a 5870 and now I run two 470's in SLI. Overall, the 5870 is a little bit more powerful than a single 470. There are some situations where the 470 performs equal to and sometimes better than the 5870 but overall I would have to say the edge goes to the 5870. The 470 does better with tesselation (not necessarily DX 11 as a whole) and sometimes with AA. And the 470 certainly beats the 5870 in the price/performance department especially with the recent price drop. It does run a little warmer but not nearly as bad as some would like you to believe.

I kind of like this.

You can add a second GTX 460 at any time you want for extra power.

I wouldn't skimp on the PSU. With that GPU, I would go with 750w PSU, preferably Corsair brand, but that's just me. There are other great brands too that are reliable.

prakhar1290

False. Both the i5 760 and x4 970 are both fully capable of reaching identical OC clocks, and the X4 970 is not guaranteed to unlock to a hexa core. And even if you did, chances are you will hit instability much earlier compared to if you just stuck with the quad-core setup. Those cores were locked for a reason, and considering they could just use higher binned Deneb cores for the X4 970 as well, chances of you getting a fully-functional hexa core from the X4 970 is even smaller.
