Building New Rig (Please Critique!)

Looking for drop $1000 on a new machine. Games are important,. but I also do some graphic work - although nothing fancy. Pretty sure the gaming aspect should take care of anything else I plan on doing. I haven't built in years so I really would appreciate some opinions...

Also! If there is anything equivalent for cheaper - or better at the same price PLEASE let me know!

Yes, I think I will go ahead and up the PSU.

If I was getting a 470, I'd probably get this one.

It just looks... well, see for yourself.

I'd get a 6870 and a 650w PSU. You could also build an AM3 system for slightly cheaper.

Well I posted earlier asking i5 vs Phenom II X6 and people seemed to side with the i5 for games a bit more.

No difference. As you'll probably be playing @ 1080p the CPU is not as important as the GPU.

I don't plan on giving up on Nvidia though. =)

No problem. As you can see, the 760 is better than the best(?) AMD CPU in nearly all of those tests at a much lower clock speed.

And the 760 only cost like $20 more.

lol I am currently running an AMD Athlon 3500+ with 2g ram and a geforce 7600 gs.

I am pretty sure w/e I get I will be happy with. =)

Well, part of me wants to go out and get a $500 setup...and the other (less practical) half wants a $1000.

I am kinda broke... =(

If you really want to save cash get an Athlon x4 640 + Gigabyte 870A-UD3 + 4GB Kingston Value Ram + 6870 (splurge here) as a base.

not sure when you plan to make the final purchase. but if you were to wait for anything at all, it'd be Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales.

and in reference to your most recent post. picking up some of these things on Black Friday/Cyber Monday could make for a great compromise with your $500 vs. $1000 struggle.

heck, you could possibly get that $1000 rig for less. getting similar power out of it while also getting it for cheaper. I mean, if you were able to snag that $1000 machine for $750-$800(which is also being very optimistic, so take care on that). I think you'd be in great hands.

what I'd do is come up with a few possibilties. 2 AMD setups and and 2 Intel setups. with 1 AMD shifting towards the $500, and the other with a $1000(or less if you see fit) and do the same thing with your two intel setups. and if those sales lean towards one more than the others, you pick up the rest of the parts you weren't able to get on sale.

Thats actually exactly what I am doing. Trying to get as much input on this build as I can. Been looking at black Friday deals a lot lately.

common, don't be silly. ph2 x4 970 be is a better overclocker and you too can unlock cores i.e quad to hexa core.

Hey, your mobo should be a supported core unlocker.

Stock versus stock the 5870 is the faster card more often than not. Yes, the GTX 470 is cheaper in most cases, but it's not better. It uses more power, usually runs hotter, and is slower.

The 5870 has lost much of it's appeal since the release of the 6870, however. I see what you're saying about the price/performance ratio of the GTX 470 currently being better than the 5870, but the card itself isn't better.

You can add a second GTX 460 at any time you want for extra power.

False. Both the i5 760 and x4 970 are both fully capable of reaching identical OC clocks, and the X4 970 is not guaranteed to unlock to a hexa core. And even if you did, chances are you will hit instability much earlier compared to if you just stuck with the quad-core setup. Those cores were locked for a reason, and considering they could just use higher binned Deneb cores for the X4 970 as well, chances of you getting a fully-functional hexa core from the X4 970 is even smaller.
