I'm buying a new laptop to take to college and while would mainly use it for word processing and surfing the internet I would like to be able to play some PC exclusives and RTS like SupCom. I looked on new egg buy couldnt get any laptop with a Nvidia 8400GS or better for around 800 dollars. Looked at dell but its overpriced so I went to hp. Do i need more than 2 GB of ram? Is a intel 1.73mhz duo core enough to keep games playable or should i get 1.83mhz. How is the 8400GS at when playing games at a pretty low res with medium detail? Is HP a good place to get a laptop? Is this a good value for 800$. Thx for any help you can give

I'd recommend against the 8400m, they arent really gaming cards, more like an integrated card than anything. The 8600m isnt too bad, but unfortunately anything higher than that will jump up in price. As for ram, try and get 3GB + especially if you're running vista. CPU - around a 2ghz dual core is still good in a laptop. Hope this helps

That isnt too bad, the CPU could be faster, usually they chuck at least a 2.0 ghz duo in for that price. The ram is good and the 8600m should run most games on medium to high, just dont expect amazing graphics.

I dont want great graphic i just want to play the game without feeling like I'm missing out. If i need a 2.0 duo i can get one from dell but its 100 dollar upgrade from the 1.6. Will i really need the 2.0ghz cause most of the games dont need anything that powerful.

the 8400gs will run 2004 games but not new ones. if you want a gaming laptop go for a 8600m gt or 2600/hd3650 or better. 2gb is pleanty for gaming. the dell xps range are great value for mobile gaming

You should buy the dell I suggested, for $850 you get 2gbs of ram (or alot more if you order some off newegg), a core 2 duo 2.13 ghrtz cpu, and the 8600gt

ya I;m looking at the dell vostro since they are so much cheaper. For whatever reason they are susposed to be "designed for the small busines" but I'm not sure what that means but they are cheap.

I just checked the Dell outlet and they have an e1720 17" laptop with an 8600m GT for $769. Not too shabby...

how do compare the duo core processors to a games system req. I know most duo cores tell you what they are running at but how do you find that out without owning it?

well they have the buissness version of windows, so no media centre or aero, they got a decent gpu? the probably just don't come loaded with lots of junk, like 3 months of norton, no finger print reader, less usb ports, no hdmi conector or tv out etc
