Hey all,

As you can assume from the title, I am currently looking to purchase a notebook for my study and entertainment. I have two in mind at the moment (they are subject to change if a better notebook is released soon), but I am pretty confused with the CPU specs between the two.

I have always used intel so I sort of know what to expect in terms of speeds and such. However, I don't really understand how they compare to AMD.

Two options I'm surveying at the moment are either: the Intel Core2 Duo P8400 2.26 1066

Or the AMD Turion™ X2 Dual-Core Mobile Processor RM-74 (2.2GHz, 1MB L2 Cache).

Here are the laptops in particular that I have found the info from (baring in mind that these are New Zealand prices).

Toshiba A300/M01

HP DV5-1210AX

Also, ignore the sale price on the toshiba. I can actually get the HP for about $200 cheaper than the Toshiba regardless :P

Your input is appreciated, just understanding how that particular intel CPU compares to that particular AMD CPU (which is faster etc).

Cheers

well it really depends what your gonna use it for, if your just gonna browse the internet and do MS word and stuff like that id go with the cheepest one regardless of which ones more powerful.

as for how they stack up for other things performance wise im not a mobile expert so i cant offer any help on that matter

Well, it was for a bit of basic use, but I also want it to handle the latest games on decent settings too.. Gotta have entertainment value, right? :P

For that price get a gaming Gateway laptop. It totaly owns the other two and is much cheaper. Best in it's class, by far.

I would love to haha, but those are all US prices. Also, I can't order any notebook from the US as the voltage is completely different (at least with desktop power supply's you can normally switch it).

I don't recommend the Hp notebook; I've had nothing but trouble with it. Though I do recommend the Toshiba laptop. Last year I had one and it ran great, Plus I believe the Intel processors run everything a little smoother in comparison to the AMD processor.

Since aug 08, ive been using my gateway p-7811 FX and i think its a fantastic laptop, even for decent res gaming. Got it at BB for around 1300 i think. go to gateways website and search for P-7811 FX or similar, maybe they have better models now.

you might want to check on the voltage issue, I have a compaq (HP) laptop that I bought right before christmas and it has a built in switch for the voltage so I can use it in the US as well as other countries, I found in my search that most laptops have this capability

Thanks!! I just discovered this too! I'm just evaluating whether or not the price conversion + cost of shipping works out in my favour ;)
