Consumers are used to paying $60 each for videogames that run on consoles like the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Now the publisher behind the industry's biggest videogame franchise— "Call of Duty"—is about to find out whether it can get them to pay a monthly bill, too.

Activision Blizzard Inc. plans to launch an online service called Call of Duty Elite this fall that will work with the next major edition of the game, "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3," and future installments of the hyper-realistic combat-simulation game. In a move industry executives describe as a first, Activision plans to charge a monthly subscription fee for the service, which will provide extra content that isn't offered on game discs sold in stores, including downloadable map packs that give players new "Call of Duty" levels to play.

Lord oh lord Activision. Dollar bills in your eyes you hath!

Isn't this old news? But anyway...I won't be paying a monthly fee.... unless it's something revolutionary and half FPS / half MMO...

HAha I don't even buy DLC, I think in the history of gaming I've bought maybe one or two DLC? And they think I'm going pay monthly feee for this DLC crap, maps packs and all that ****...

Seriously these devs and pubs are just getting lazy, they want money for minimal effort. Map packs should be free in the first place to help support the community. But now they want to charge monthly fees for them, crazy world they live in. And yeah they might pull it off as there's loads of suckers out there who will pay for anything. But they will not be getting not even a penny from I!!.

Yes, probably lots of people will sign up for it. I would like them to try this but in a DIFFERENT way. As in create an FPS MMO in the CoD Universe....where you pay monthly, create your character, level your character etc. Then also have "raids" in the form of MAPS.... group battles (PvP), missions (PvE) etc....

It depends on the price. I can see having additional guns, perks, maps be on a subscription service of 4.99 per month at most. Anything higher is not worth it for me.

It's unfortunate that people will be willing to pay anything. Activision isn't satisfied with the millions in sales they get from all the Call of Duty games they release, nor are they happy with the thousands of you who pay $15 for maps they should have given us for free. Eventually they'll just keep re-releasing the same maps and none of the fanboys will care.

It has nothing to do with being satisfied.

Of course. It all depends on price. If the montly fee is minimal (like $3 x month) for continous maps, new weapons, new perks, new killstreaks.... engine updates, add-ons, etc etc then it's worth it....

The DLC because you get them for good, the initial investment might be higher, but even if it goes as low as 5$ per month (which I doubt since we're talking about Activision) it's an insane ripoff which naive fans will jump on the second it's available.

Even if I'd play it for just one month (and I won't since I won't be getting the game), I'd still take DLCs over a monthly fee, because I know I'd be able to play it again in one or two years without worrying about extra payment.

Very true....unless they make it permanent once it's downloaded.

As in you pay monthly fees, and you can play but once you stop paying monthly fees you don't get any more updates (Maps, etc) but can still play what you have installed (same way a paid antivirus works)

I bought cod 4 a while back and I am not a hard gamer as all of you seem to be , I hardly get time to game and that too I take atleast 3 or four months on one game and still I found cod 4 very very expensive here in delhi.(India). Easily the most expensive game I ever bought.

Right...

Ha, yeah I was gonna quote that too.

I think with any other publisher I might consider it, but you just know Activision are going to overcharge for little content. If you were paying a tiny amount of money, say maybe £2 a month, for maps (obviously only one at a time when released rather than 5 at a time), new weapons, and actual things of interest, it might not be so bad. But Activision would never do that, over 12 months they'd only be making £24 off you, and 2 map packs can earn them that much anyway. You just know it'll be about £5-£10 a month, and either completely break the game by giving people overpowered weapons, or just be a massive rip off.

Lol  cod IS revolutionary, take a look around, almost all mp fps got killstreaks. COD clrealy revolutionize the genre. As for the fee? its speculation so far. It might be crap like the ones they put on pre orders or tf2 hats. Or it could be like wow since blizzard has something to do with it and bring alot to the game. Could even result into a lower price for the game itself. But whan confuses me is that they said that we will never pay to play mp Which kinda questions the validity of the article.

It's not that "devs" and "pubs" are lazy. It's that they know how to capitalize on suckers. They're a business and their goal is to make as much money as possible by capitalizing on their most important assets. This is a brilliant idea for them. Absolutely, a huge part of their fan base for CoD will sign up for a monthly subscription. It's been done for years with the RPG genre. This could be the start of a new and common practice. Like it or not, it is all based on the consumers actions. So really, the only one to blame are your fellow gamers.

How so? this doesn't discuss about paying for multiplayer, it's about paying for accessing premium content monthly, aka, you don't need to pay 15$ times w/e number of DLCs we make, just pay us monthly and you get it all for the time you pay (this would solve "breaking the community" and would also make them more money but I personally would go for the outrageous 15$ per 5 maps than this thing).

The only thing i can see a monthly fee being good for is a MMO not a FPS (unless its a MMOFPS lol). Anyway the fee wont be for being able to play multiplayer as some of you think. CoD multiplayer will be free to play as always as stated on @fourzerotwo twitter (if you know who he is, works for infinity ward). Also there is supposed to be a reveal of exactly what this elite service will be sometime this AM. Oh and yes bungie has something similar called bungie PRO. All it is though is for more file share space and ability to render videos to download to your PC. It is an annual fee.

Don't you think thats still unfair?

A monthly fee for continuous DLCs VS $15 for 4 maps..... which one is fair? which one do you prefer?

Depends on if the service is worth the fee... (I honestly do not see anywhere where this will be worth it)

$15 for anything under 10 maps is ridiculous... I mean the entire game is $60.

It is unfortunately another pure capitalist agenda here... Money, money, money!

I am still interested in the game, but I will see how this further developes before I spend another dime on COD.. (will never buy another Treyarch COD)

This is the first I've heard of it. I wasn't sold on MW3 yet anyways, but now I def won't be buying it. This is already an expensive hobby in rough economic times and this industry isn't hurting for money. My CoD boycott begins today, not that they care but it makes me feel better.

No, Dakan, just...no.

Anyways, I'm not really so surprised about this, it was inevitable anyways. I just hope it stays this way though, would be really sad if they start making this monthly fee mandatory.

Yeah, same was said in the past aboutabout wow. That now that guildwars does not need a month fee, people will give a chance to other rpgs and not think that wow is best by default. I dont need to tell you how that worked out.

Realistically, I think we can expect this monthly fee to be a ripoff. After the success of MW2 and Black Ops, this will probably be a money-making move for Activision. It isn't Activision to blame if people are opening their wallets for weak sequels and PoS, shallow games. I certainly wouldn't pay money for this, but I am not going to complain about how others spend their money.
