You might also consider that DX10 is Vista exclusive, so if you have Vista you might as well get a DX10 card, if not and aren't planning on upgrading then DX9 will suffice.  (However if you think you will get Vista at some point you could future proof yourself to an extent by getting a DX10 card)

The choice, as always, is yours!

Well, if you're in the market for a new card, and you have the money, I'd recommend getting a DX10 card, even if you don't have Vista for DX10. The cards are fantastic, and newer models are coming out for a much wider variety. But, if you're still going for a DX9 card, go ahead and get one, since most DX10 games coming out within the next year have some sort of backwards compatibility for DX9 cards.

The Nvidia 8000 series cards are DX10 and have been out for a while now. Is there a specific DX10 card you're waiting for that hasn't come out yet?

You can play DX10 games on a DX9 card, but you won't get to use any of the 'features' that DX10 offers.

I think it's foolish to buy into a DX10 card if your only reason is to play DX10 games because I don't even need my fingers to count how many of those are out now :) Plus you need Vista and for me I'm not touching that OS for at least a year and by the point Vista's replacement will be around the corner.

it wont be replaced by a year, not even by 2 years, did u hear about aero, or even readyboost, tight security, no viruses at all, fast in games, looks nice, has the new ip protocol, even direct x 10 is in that OS.

Exactly. I won't be getting Vista for a while so I may get a Dx9 card when the DX10 cards come out so it will be cheaper. Or I may get a Dx10 card depending on the benchmarks.

Even outside of Vista, my 8800GTX is awesome. While the Cascade demo is very impressive, my overall game performance with this card is greater than my 7950, which is nice because now I have that level of performance but without having to run SLI (and sacrifice dual head). This is especially nice with new titles like SupCom that actaully play on both monitors.

I hear a lot of good about Vista and a lot of bad. I've been around since DOS, Windows 95, 98, ME, 2k, XP, etc and I'm a cynic of MS operating systems as far as them working as advertised right off the bat so I'm holding off.

MS already has Vienna in the works for '09 to replace Vista http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/02/09/HNvistafollowup_1.html. Vienna is what Vista was suppose to be and I was excited about it till they stripped Vista down on promising features that I would have wanted. Granted MS isn't real good with delivery dates so you might be right on it not being out in 2 years :)

Haha, yeah. There's a reason Microsoft stopped naming products after the year of their intended release...
