I don't usually have an issue but i was playing a free mmo called Runes of Magic and the fps is low even though the graphics aren't that great. i noticed the same with a free mmo called Perfect World. Maybe it's just an mmo thing.

they aren't compatible. If you are playing a DX9 game you must have it installed I believe.

You cannot use DX10 with a DX9 game since, well, it's a DX9 game and does not support DX10--DirectX 9 is not forwards compatible. It says DirectX 10 in dxdiag because that's what Vista uses. Vista uses DX9 as well, and is backwards compatible with DX8, DX7, etc. Not the best analogy, but: DX10 on a DX9 game is like a PS2 playing a PS3 game. I suppose it'd be possible to emulate the game with a DX10 renderer, but there's not really any point in doing that as it'd be a bunch of coding just to have lower performance with no benefits.

I HIGHLY doubt that having a NEWER version of directx than required, would be hurting your FPS. If anything, it could raise them, but that is doubtful. Surely there is another issue. I would try different video modes & settings if available.

Well guys i read at gameforwindows website and it says...

"One of the most exciting developments in Windows Vista is the groundbreaking graphics technology. Many of the newest Windows games take full advantage of the next-generation graphics technology in Windows Vista called DirectX® 10. DirectX 10 provides an incredibly detailed experience for gamers of every type, and enables game creators to increase a game's level of realism, enhancing details and complexity in gaming worlds, apply effects like dynamic lighting and weather, and much more.

While Windows Vista is fully compatible with games and hardware that use older versions of DirectX, the new DirectX 10 features are available with a DirectX 10 compatible graphics card and games designed to take advantage of this new technology. Adding a DirectX 10 card to a PC running Windows Vista is like turbocharging your gaming experience. Existing games (most of which were written using DirectX® 9) get world class performance, while unlocking the new generation of gaming graphics with DirectX 10 optimized games."

^And?

...Einhanderkiller laid it out pretty clearly above:

DirectX 9 games will use DirectX 9. You cannot use DirectX 10 in a game that only supports DirectX 9.

Vista has both directx 9 and directx 10 installed. A directx 9 game will always play in directx 9 mode. A directx 10 game can typically play either in directx 9 or directx 10 mode, depending on the game setting.
