Can't connect to Steam...sad day.

The title says it all. I can't get steam to connect to the internet. I tried re-installing it and now it won't even open. The little update bar pops up for a while before disappearing, an error message comes up and says for Steam to work you must be connected to the internet. Ive tried turning off my firewall, ive scanned for viruses and spyware that could be blocking it, and ive cleaned up my registry (not that that would really do much of anything). I'm on my school's network and my friend in IT says Steam should work fine and it has worked fine in the past. Any suggestions?

... every now and then they have to shut the servers down for maintenance, like the big MMO's ( like WOW) do. Anybody that uses mega-servers has to. That should be all it is unless you do have some kind of internet problem.

just read the steam forum...awesome, a lot of people are having the problem and no one really has an answer. Yeah its still not working, maybe one of these days by sheer magic it will start up...
