Thankyou so much. It works and it's free! Man, for a minute I thought I had to buy Nero for 89 Bucks.

VLC player, M player, Windows Media Player Classic. It all goes down to getting the right codec pack. Try ACE Mega CoDecS Pack 6.03 or Gordian Knot would be what I usually recommend.

You're wrong there. Try updating your WMP and get a good codec pack.

Microsoft has no way of restricting WMP playback, regardless of your OS build (I had no problems playing DVDs on any Windows Vista build or Windows 7 for that matter)

Usually this is due to the lack of a DVD decoder. This software usually comes with the DVD drive or is pre-installed on your PC (if you rebuild the PC, usually it is not installed automatically). However, as previously mentioned, the VLC player does include the required MPEG2 decoder. It wasn't included in many OS's as it required licensing from the DVD consortium for the decoder and CSS decryption. I think it cost ~$20/license. I'm not exactly sure how VLC gets away with installing it for free. They probably reverse-engineered the process and use a "non-authorized" solution.

VLC does not require a codec pack in most situations. Media Player Classic does. That's why I prefer VLC generally speaking. If you are going to download a codec pack, go for the Combined Community Codec Pack (CCCP). It's pretty much the best one out there.

I did tried to install my DVD player software - and it kept telling me the samething that I have to install Nero7 which is old and it doesn't even let me finish installing it just shut off the near the end so..... And the Windows Media Player update said the samething "it does not aply - or something like that". ...Oh well, VLC works great so Im gonna keep it.

As long as VLC works for you, you should be all set as it is reliable software. What kind of computer do you have. Dell normally has a disc that will install the DVD codec separately from the actual playing software (Nero or Roxio). Being that Nero will not complete the install, it i possible it is getting hung up looking for the codec or there is a problem with your codec installation and it can't over-write or access it.

Been there. That's your problem. The DVD-drive was probably OEM and shipped without the DVD license/decoder.
