So I was having problems with gta 4 a few weeks ago and it completely crapped out to the point it won't even start anymore. I try uninstalling it, and it just starts the little progress bar and then doesn't do anything. Forever. Hahaha. but yeah it obviously just freezes up and then I have to bring in the tast manager to get it to go away and everything and its a big pain. How can I get rid of it, so I can install it again with the recent compatibility updates I've got that may help?

Thats how I tried it to begin with. I can't find an uninstall exe in the program file for the game to do it itself.

Look for the games save location, usually its something along these lines C:\Program Files\GTA4 in that folder theres usally a unistall program run it and see if it works. Btw that not the real file destination as I dont know where you saved your game.

nope, nothing. There's a "revoke licence" application, for revoking the serial code registration, and I got that far when I first tried to uninstall it. But now it doesn't want to uninstall the rest of the way.

Just delete your GTAIV folder and additionaly if you want to remove it from the registry, not that hard.

Indeed what I was thinking. Delete the GTA IV folder, then clear the AppData => Local and Roaming folders and then clear the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE => SOFTWARE registry keys and you're done.

I can help you.

When this problem comes up what you need to do is set the compatibility flag for the original setup or uninstaller, not the game executable. The trick, as you all found out, is finding it. So here's what you do for saaaaay Windows 7 64-bit.

You're looking for a hidden folder named "InstallShield Installation Information"

For 32-bit games (such as GTA4) installed on Win7-64, that would be in the C:\Program Files (x86)\InstallShield Installation Information folder.

When you open that folder you'll see a bunch of codes enclosed with brackets {xxx}. The good news is that those codes are unique to each application, game, utility, etc. The one for GTA4 is {579BA58C-F33D-4970-9953-B94B43768AC3}.

Find that folder, open it, and locate setup.exe. From there you can set the compatibility flag for it to Windows Vista w/ SP2, and then uninstall normally using your Add/Remove programs.

I'm putting this information here because this topic comes up high on search engines so wanted to help out by putting the solution within it.

Cheers.
