The hd6870 is 10.3 inches long, I read somewhere that it was supposed to be like 8.5 inches long.

Now what is ridiculous about this is that their are gonna be three more cards that are predictably gonna be longer than the hd6870 at 10.3 inches long.

The HD6950, the HD6970, and the HD6990. (are they gonna be the same size as the 6870? probably not, they are more than likely gonna be longer, so now we are gonna have cards almost a freaking foot long) (where very few cases even support such a card)

This is actually very disappointing. (I was really hoping that the HD6950 would be under 10.5 inches long, which I guess I could pretty much rule out. Unless the length of the cards is one of the reasons they are pushing the 6900 series cards back, til mid December, oh one can hope)

Oh well I guess I can still look forward to the GTX 560 and 570. (Don't really want to have to spend another $100 bucks on a case, when I am buying a $300-350 gpu).

Does anyone that actually has a HD6870 post some measurements? As well as some GTX580 measurements (which I presume the 560 and 570 will be slightly shorter than).

Thx in advance

I have no idea why you're disappointed. 10.5 inches is fairly normal for mid-high end cards. Isn't the HD5870 like 11 inches or something? Early leaked photos has the HD6970 looking 11 inches. And I highly doubt anyone at AMD would delay the launch of a (high-end) GPU because the PCB board was longer than 9.5 inches. I think the GTX580 is between 10.5-11 inches, definitely not shorter.

Hmm really, I guess I was just expecting too much, that is still getting ridiculous imo.

I think I may just nab me an HD6870 or the GTX560 (which ever is supposed to be better) I know the HD6870 is getting close to the limit my case can comfortably fit. (but if the gtx560 is better at around the same length/or the gtx 570 as well for around $300-350 then I might go that route)

Anyway thx for the reply.

I just checked and reports are that a reference HD6870 is ~9 3/4 inches, i.e just under 10 inches. So might want to double check your case, if you ever decide on a purchase decision.

Thx my case can comfortably fit anything under 10.5 inches in length. (But the cards I am looking at are the hd6870, hd6950, gtx560, gtx570, so whichever one of those has the best performance while remaining under 10.5 inches long, heat/noise and price ($300-350max) {I still have about 3 and a half months until my gpu upgrade}

I shouldn't be greedy. I will just choose the best choice out of the 4 cards that suits my needs. (need to replace 8800gt sli setup, runs hot {cards blow air inside case not out the back of the case}.

Anyway just starting to ramble now.

My reference Sapphire 6870 is 25.4cm or 10 inches. It fits fine in my Antec Two Hundred with 2 inches of space left.

Hmm, thats not bad at all, side power jacks right? Maybe the hd6950 will be under 10.5 after all, but we will just have to wait and see. (I don't think they have stated much on the 6900 series yet).

If I recall, power jacks on the top of the card; 2 six-pins. Slightly bigger than the 4890 I replaced it with.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121401&cm_re=6870-_-14-121-401-_-Product that right there is a 9.5 inch 6870. the xfx black edition card is 10.3 inches. although, there is a slight performance gain for 40 dollars more. cards have been over 10 inches for awhile. the high end 8800's were pushing 10 (or were over), the 9800 gtx, 200 gtx series, and probably some radeon hd 4800/4900's were getting close to 10 or over (not really sure about those ati cards. and too lazy to check). its been at least a few years since we've seen the first 10 inch cards.

My 5970 is a full foot long, and there have been even longer cards in the past (IIRC wasn't the GTX295 something like 14 inches long?) This is why I went for a full-ATX case. I don't have to ever worry about a piece of hardware not fitting. I don't get why people dish out for mid-ATX cases when they want to put anything higher than mid-end components in them. Sure, mid-ATX cases are cheaper and have far more options, but you WILL run into size issues if you ever want to put in a high end heatsink or GPU.

True, but most people buy mid range parts for a mid-range case. It would be stupidity to buy a $30 case and then complain your $600 5970 doesn't fit.

Wow, though I never paid attention to some of those cards lengths because the price alone let me know I was just wasting my time lol. Though my case was kinda expensive and not really a small case, I do not want to upgrade cases on this build. (I already ruled out things like a 6970-6990, gtx 580, and the cards like those, I know won't fit, but a mid-high range card like a 6950 it isn't that far off base to hope for it to be under 10.5 inches long).

well my NZXT M59 case fits a CoolerMaster hyper 212 heat sink with fan and my GTX 460 very nicely. also i think the way the made teh case it can hold a longer card as well. but if i ever do get a longer card and doesnt fit it will give me more reason to save up and buy my dream case. the new Antec Lanboy Blue. :D

Like I stated before I don't want to get another case until I build my new rig in a few years. Until then I will just use my case, I will just find the most powerful card under 10.5 inches long, that isn't anymore than $350.

Oh ok, yeah I found some 6870 that were 9.5inches long, and some that were 10.3 inches long. So I know at least 2 of the 4 cards I mentioned will be under 10.5 inches long. (the hd6870, and the gtx560) (We will just have to wait and see on the gtx570 and hd6950, I think its gonna be pretty close with those 2 cards)
