$250-300 budget. The sound coming out of the old z5300 is nothing but crackles.

I see onkyo htib, but I was wondering is it possible to buy seperate speakers/receiver for the same price for better performance or is it as good as it gets on a budget?

No way. TC, you can get a budget AV receiver for £150 (don't know US prices) like the Onkyo SR309, Denon AVR 1312, Pioneer VSX-521 or Sony STRDH520. That doesn't leave you with much for speakers though.

If you need to buy a prebuilt set then I suggest the ones by Onkyo and Yamaha over the other HTiB by say Samsung or Sony. You'll usually get a descent receiver that you can expand on once you get ready to.

http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-HT-S3500-5-1-Channel-Theater-Receiver/dp/B0077V88V8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1351168327&sr=8-1&keywords=htib It's not absolutely amazing, but it's a good starter set with plenty of hookups.
