I love the Apple Thunderbolt Display because the colors seem to pop out and everything looks really beautiful, and then the blacks look really seep, and the display in general looks really sleek, clean and just plain beautiful. However (there's always a however) the price is ridiculously high for me and the screen is a bit too big. I'm looking for something around 21-23" and I've seen some highly rated monitors like from Asus that are for under $200. They don't look as good as the apple display and I'm not sure how their image quality compared. The edge to edge glass dell displays look quite nice though.

So what do I need in the display apart from having the excellent quality of the apple display, I would like to be able to plug in HDMI cables, mini display ports, have little or no glare, the screen should be at least 1080p, look beautiful and be a lot more affordable than the apple displays. Of course at the price level the displays won't be as good as the apples or even look as nice as them but am I being too optimistic with what might be available?

Any suggestions?

I'm fairly certain the Apple Thunderbolt actually has terrible black levels. The colours are accurate, no doubt.

What you are looking for is an IPS LCD. Something from Dell, NEC, Eizo etc.

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering if lower resolution gaming on a high resolution display looks fine? Say for example I have two displays, both 23". One display is 1080p and the other is 720p natively. If I made my game to play in 720p instead of 1080p (in order to get better performance), would both the displays look exactly the same? I've heard that the 1080p display would look blurred but I'm not sure about it, how true is it?

Maybe on a TV, since you'd be sitting far away enough to not notice it. On a monitor though, resolution is the most important thing. Always max that before turning up the extra visual effects.

Under 200 heh comes in hdmi or dvi only model. The blacks do look good in a brighter setting, but glow/light bleeding sets in at night this pretty general for ips. If you want less glare than opt for the ultrasharp, but I dont like AG coating since it makes it look grainy. The apple display themselves are I think glossy and high reflective.

As for the other question, always try to get the highest resolution content closest to your display or is going to look blurry. 16x9 perhaps, but 720 is going to look bad with 1080p screen.

Well since I'll be doing low res gaming shouldnt I go for a low res screen? I thought that the high res monitor would just use several pixels to display one pixel, kind of like makingg its pixels larger and the end result would be the same.

You're not going to find any low resolution monitors with good IQ. That's only possible if you go hunt down CRT monitors.

Why would you game at a low resolution? And what you're saying about scaling only works in specific cases when the native resolution of the display is an exact multiple of the lower resolution you're using, such as 2560x1440 being exactly double the dimensions of 1280x720 (720p) meaning you can just have 4 pixels for each 1 pixel. In reality this is rare.

Well I would like to game in low res because if my hardware can't keep up with the games I would rather game in low res than sacrifice textures and stuff.

I guess I could make sure that whatever resolution I scale down to, its an exact multiple then.

There is no point using high res textures when the game is being rendered at a low res...
