Hokay, so I got Civ 4 and am basically just building as much crap as possible (FYI I know this is a useless tactic) and my cities always gets overly crowded and unhealthy so I have some questions:

1. How do I fix being overly crowded and unhappy?

2. What are some good tactics if you could list them

3. What is the best approach to winning a game? (i.e. diplomatic, war, etc.)

I appreciate it if you reply

:)

World Wonders (or whatever the hell they're called) usually help with unhappiness, I think. as for victory conditions, at least in the original Civ IV(no expansions, in other words) the UN victory is by far the easiest one.

For sick people build aquaducts and hospitals[if you get that far in the game] also build lots of farms and connect them with roads and build world wonders. Try getting the globe thearter. That really helps destroy unhappy people.

I cant give you many good tactics though.

I always love winning the space race. Thats a easy one to win. Just build tons of space parts and you win. Cultural victories are easy on tiny maps. The hardest to win is domination. I'd go for 1]space race 2]culture 3]diplomacy

I'm not a master of the game but have played CIV 4 quite a bit and finally found that you need control overcrowding and unhappiness using the following:

1) early in the game when your cities are new and smaller, you usually don't have to worry about these factors. You can focus your production on units, wonders and generally key research buildings. I find research bonus are good to get first and/or religion, which in turn can help research, in order to research the advance tech quicker. Some of the advance techs offer options and building that improve health and happiness.

2) In your city interface there are some buttons near the lower right that control automation of production, reasearch, etc. and that allow you to control growth. The control growth button became my friend As your city reaches a certain population size in relation to health and happiness, I click the button to stop growth until i can build improvements and wonders that will add to health and happiness

3) Once you can increase health and happiness a few points, I click the button to allow growth and increase my population. Of course, the extra citizens can be used on resources to improve production, income and food, or to use as scientists, priests, etc.

4) Again keep an eye on these factors and stop growth temporarily until you can improve things. Some wonders provide unlimited health or happiness in a city if you can build them. Build these in your largest or most productive cities as you can only build one of these wonders

5) Lastly, the slavery civic offers the option to sacrifice citizens to speed up production. Sacrificing citizens serves multiple purposes at the same time, but should be used judiciously and timely. For instance, i sacrifice citizens to speed prod on an important improvement or wonder that will provide a significant benefit to my city or civilization such as research, health or happiness, or indirectly leads to these improvements. Additionally, and most relevant to your question, is that sacrificing a citizen at points when your city is overcrowded, and therefore unhealthy and unhappy, WILL, while increasing unhappiness, improve health and balance unhappiness by virtue of having less citizens. Also, this is good for developing new cities or conquered cities faster. Use this option wisely though because the effect I described can be negated by overuse too soon as the unhappiness will increase to fast in contrast to the gain received in reducing population.

Also, note that while slavery is a civic used generally early in the game, you can switch back to the civic temporarily in later stages in the game if you choose to take use of the sacifice citizen option. Usually though, my cities are highly developed and stable by this point, but in some historical scenarios that top out at less advanced civics this option may still prove prudent

6) Lastly, a city may basically reach a cap in which you want to stop the growth pretty much for good

edit:

one more thing, certain civics provide bonuses in health or happiness based on certain conditions. keep an eye on your civics especially at certain points in the game. some are better for times of war to not only improve unit bonuses but keep cities happy during times of war, especially by the number of fortified units stationed in the city.

1. when you see that the city will grow and the angry will outnumber the happy you have to switch around the plots that you're working so that the city doesn't grow. construct buildings that give you happy faces. If u despritaley need to lower the pop in a city, then switch to slavery and sacrafice some of the pop. The city will be extra angry for a few turns but it may help you in the long run.

2. go for resources- they make you good gold and/ or will get u resources which u don't have. allways trade excess resources, build a strong army

3. i allways choose war. Its the easiest for me. I ussually am losing until i sack some of their cities. lol

let me know if u ever want to play online. Im allways up for a game. Do u have xfire?

Dopemonk736

generally, i found that you have to balance building your wonders based on a) the bonuses they provide and your overall strategy b) the number of cities you have and how productive they are c) the situation. For example, if you are at war and building wonders every where you won't be able to focus on producing units to defend your civ. building too many wonders can be a waste, especially as a wonder may end up build faster by another civ. as you get more savvy, you know what techs/trees lead to certain wonders faster, allowing you to build them first. again, balance this with your strategy and goals. So, in short you don't want to just build all the wonders. also, see my post above for options on maintaining your city

currency has many benefits, including the overall status of your civ. there's civics that allow you to use gold to speed up production - i forget which one at the moment. also, you need gold to support your troops and research. adjusting your research, culture and espionage bars impact how much gold your producing by turn and it can go into the negative. miliarity is a big factor in how much gold you need

I have a question of my own:

How often do you build extra settlers? form the start of the game I mean.

Do you build all imporvements the city offers?

Also, how many units do you generally have per city? Do you have any roaming the world/borders?

thanks!

Get a settler out the door ASAP, but you'll also want to have a unit to defend him with and the city he will build lest you get owned by a barbarian or other civ.

You want to get a good base of cities going, but you can't expand to fast or you'll end up losing gold per turn hand of fist unless you have an expansive civ. Basically don't build a city just to build one, build one to take advantage of a resource, to block other civs from gaining access to more of 'your lands' or to increase production. Alas, don't build so many that you can't defend them ;)

You don't need to build all improvements, the basic rule is if your people aren't clamoring for certain things then don't build them. I do like to build libraries, granaries, and other improvements that boost your science or gold output. Other improvements like barracks, or drydocks aren't needed every where, just the cities you have that have high production values.

Amount of units depend on the competition :) I usually have at least 1 per city and in my border cities I have 2-3. I keep an army of 4-5 units around just in case. I do use several units preferably scouts to roam the world to uncover all the tiles.

Thanks a lot man :) I guess I was doing good in some instances you've mentioned, but I believe that my expansion is a little too slow now that you mention it. Thanks again.

1. Build colosseums, theatres, aqueducts, etc. War creates unhappiness, so if you are often in war you might want to use the police state civic - choose it right before you declare war on someone.

2. Nope, find them out for yourself. ;)

3. Depends entirely on the situation. The worst approaches are to insist on founding a certain religion and trying to force it on everybody else, or trying to dominate everyone through warfare, obviously. ;)
