I was wondering what the best anti-virus software was..

I want it to interfear with as few online games as possible

NO bloatware - just the virus protection

Paid or Free

I know of a few top brands:

Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky etc..

also MS security(my worry with this is the level of development it has? How active are they in updates etc..)

And some brands I have not heard of:

BitDefender

f-secure

Also, do I need anything for Malware, bots etc?

Thanks in advance

Kaspersky should be good. There are free tools also at their site, if your computer is limbo. Saved my *** the other day.

I'm just using adaware free.

There is only one I would recommend over Kaspersky, and that is Eset's Nod 32.

One of the better out there is BitDefender.  But it has Ubisoft's Uplay on a blacklist and it used to have problems with Steam...

I don't have to turn off Nod when I game...

Matter of fact it has gamer mode, which it goes into when it detects anything in full screen mode. (like a game, or a movie)

Gamer mode doesn't turn off the firewall, it just prevents the virus scanner from minimizing -or otherwise interfering with- the game you're playing.

The problem with Steam is that it operates on a level below what most firewalls detect.  BitDefender still detects the lower-level shenanigans from Steam -and blocks Steam- but that means Steam isn't sitting in the firewall's application rules and as such I cannot grant Steam permission to make a connection.

Uplay is blacklisted because -apparantly- there are (or have been) security issues with it.  But with BitDefender, you can add Uplay to a whitelist and overrule BitDefender's settings.

I've nver played on Origin, so I don't know how BitDefender reacts to it...

I used to game on a separate computer which had the free version of AdAware and ZoneAlarm as a firewall (free version of AdAware didn't have a firewall at the time).  Now I avoid Steam altogether.

Kaspersky and NOD32 are good paid options.

For free I like MSE, it's got some bad rep recently but I like the way it's never annoying.

I undestand what Gamer mode is, I was just letting the OP know that STEAM, Uplay, or Origin never gave me any problems with Nod turned on the entire time.

But I can see how that post could be slightly confusing, so I appreciate your response anyway.

Been using Norton Security Suite since it comes free with my ISP on my lower end PCs and laptops I use Microsoft Security Essentials since its very light on resources.
