Now I was arguing last time with a friend. Apparently none of the games I've played in my whole lifetime will compare to the challenges that Fight Night Round 4 provides. I was in disagreement. I'd have to wonder wheter Fatal1ty considers this game worthy of e-sport material. But maybe I need to view this from a broader perspective.

Is Fight Night Round 4 really the ultimate benchmark of measuring an individuals skill to explain it as best as possible, the way my friend putted it. What do you guys think? Fight Night Round 4, out of all the availlable games? Really?

FNR4? I have not played that game, but no. Just no. Your friend is a noob. Introduce him to Starcraft, Quake 3, Street Fighter, or Counter Strike. Those are the only games I consider competitive on a professional level. There is no "one game" to measure individuals skill, since there are so many genres that play very differently.

Never played it but I'm assuming that you perform key presses in real time to block, dodge, punch, jab and move around the ring. In which case you could then say its comparable with every other fighting game known to man. As far as I know the boxing guys don't perform any jumping maneuvers so that's essentially 2D where you move about the ring. Fighting games are moving about on the ground and in the air, so already don't you have an extra dimension the brain must use and defend from? So wouldn't any 3D fighting game superseed Fright Night because of it's lack of aerial battles? Well you can try that argument, I don't really know the game though, maybe they shoot laser from their eyes and travel through time.

Company of heroes is a game that requires just about pure skill if you're going to be the best (legitimately without cheating of course T_T)

Counter Strike, Quake 3, Unreal Tounry 2k4, Starcraft, Warcraft 3, Company of Heroes... a small list of the true competitive games. Starcraft and Quake 3 easily takeing the top spots for games that require pure skill.

I played the demo. I called him a noob cause his gaming career obviously started with an Xbox 360 if he thinks FNR4 is the ultimate test of skill in gaming. I didn't mean he is a noob at FNR4 but a newbie to competitive gaming.

I did too.

The true test of skill is being able to beat/survive the enemy even when the playing field isn't level. That's why I enjoy games like Battlefield where you have to work with a squad to deal with massive amounts of grenade spam and those dirty, dirty jets.

I'd also suggest Company of Heroes.

even you've said it yourself.... different genre requires different skills and understanding. there might be aspects of a certain game, of any genre on any platform, which players of other games do not master. to a sports gamer, Starcraft can be similarly summed up as build and rush, and CS point and shoot. your friend might not be right, but in this context he's definitely not a noob.

Counter-Strike is the obvious answer. I've never played Starcraft, but I've got the impression that you'll need a ton of skill at higher levels...

Among recent games, Arma 2 requires a ton of skill. First time I played online I died eight times before I got a kill! Tactics and skill help a lot. Starcraft also require quite a bit of 'pure skill'.

oh i love playing BF2 in squads with friends... not much matches the satisfaction of playing entirely on foot and kicking the crap out of a team who rarely leave the protection of their tanks... for that reason i actually prefer the project reality mod, i find its much much easier to find people who really want to work together in that game with voice chat and kind ofa chain of command.

as for company of heroes, while i absolutely ADORE that game, i think a better RTS to measure skill by would be either starcraft or warcraft 3, simply due to the amount of unit and base management that needs to go into those games, whereas with CoH, the basebuilding isnt particularly deep and there isnt as much of a variety of units to mix up, but you're right, it still does require a lot of skill to play well.

when it comes to shooters its probably a case of quake 3 or the unreal games simply because that is all twitch skills and the guns are pinpoint accurate, not like CSS where noobs can often spray and luck-out with a headshot because the weapons have a cone of fire which is somewhat unpredictable.

i dont really know about fighting and sports games because i've never played them, but i cant imagine them being as complex and as challenging as any of the games mentioned above, but hey, like i said, i dont really know much on that matter...

FN:R4 seemed to require a ton of skill when I played the demo...it made FN:R3 seem like kids play honestly. Though I don't agree it's the most skill intensive game out there. That all depends on what you define as skill. Timing, reaction, countering? Or maybe some see planning, tactics, and execution as requiring more skill. Very subjective topic...I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole lol.

 you're going to get banned man. We get it, Computer gaming is the ultimate and most dominent form of gaming. But anyways I play FNR4 and I would have to disagree. Get your friend into Ninja Gaiden, the metal slug series, Crysis on Delta, Battle Toads, Hello Kitty. Then We"ll talk

Honestly? I would go with any streetfighter, king of fighter and even tekken before fight night round 4.

It is a very good game, its not that, but it is too random...

sadly that applys to CoH aswell, since there is a chance your tank survives an anti tank shell, this makes it fit for a purely skillbased game, since the player is not in control of said chance)

SC is a good choice, and CS (I would go with 1.6 for competetive skill based, altho I prefer CS:S) DoD is pretty good too.

Then there are the arena shooters, most of them are good for skill based fighting, mostly because it all depends on skill of the player, aim, knowlage of map, and movement. UT2k4, Q3 and so on.

if a game is based on pure skill, any random things can not exist, it undermines the skill part.

.... WOW bashing comes from everywhere and you have no idea what your talking about.

Oh and WOW to the guy refering to COH above me as taking less skill than War Craft and Starcraft due to a lack of base building. Are you guys seriouse? How about DOW then thats got base building and points to capture? How about we look at the game respectively to how they play, not what they are chooosing to miss out lol.

Counterstrike Source.

Your friend doesnt know what hes talking about. Fight Night is casual garbage i mo and doesnt take ANY skill what so ever to play. Its just punch punch punch, thats it. At least in the UFC game you can do wrestling, judo, submissions, kicks and punches.

IMO Counterstrike Source takes the most skill.

Not true my friend. In most FPS games, automatic guns (Minigun in UT, M4 in CS, MG in Quake 3, etc) all have spread. The spread, while predictable in some ways, is random.

Kind of true. The lack of base-building really takes away the need to macro, but the cover system really adds to the need to micro well. For me, a true skill game is where n00bs get their ass handed back to them over and over. It takes practice to succeed, not like CoD4 16v16 TDM where you just spray and pray and start to get kills. Games like UT3, CS, SC, and WC3 all fit that category.

This is SW material. Fight Night Round 4 isn't even a PC game.
