I just bought a hdtv and now I need component cables. I don't have a hd player, just a dvd player that does 480p. I started looking and I notice some are like 10 bucks, then you have some gold ones that are like 30. Is there a difference in these, or is it just a rip off?

Gold plating is not really necessary for consumer electronics equipment. I think $30 is a bit steep for a standard 6ft length component cable. $10 is reasonable. You should get decent shielding for that length and price.
