I was trying to overclock my CPU by looking at a guide on how to do so. I went to the BIOS and did everything to a "T" I downloaded CPUID to check to see if my overclocking worked and I saw a few weird things. First, I increased the core clock which showed up on CPUID but it lowered the multiplier on its own, which i couldnt change, so it was still reading the stock 1.8GHZ.........btw my CPU is an Intel C2D 1.8 GHZ processor...... so i guess I ddi it wrong but also i was looking at the stats on my RAM, which is a pair of 1GB DDR2 800 RAM, and it says it was only putting out 400MHZ not 800.... what the heck........i built this comp and know a bit about navigating the BIOS and such but any tips on how to approch this problem?

i should also ad that in the BIOS it shows my CPU clock at 2.7GHZ and my RAM at 800MHZ.....

sometimes it might lower your multiplier by itself, to increase stability, and as for your ddr2 800 ram running at 400mhz, that's because ddr means double data rate, so double of 400mhz would be 800

oh sorry. ok then for the CPU.....anyway to fix that? or is it always going to reset the multiplier. cuz i was told to overclock my CPU to around 2.8 and it would work.

any chance you have the asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe Motherboard? Because that sounds exactly like that board (I have one).

*sigh* i see this so much, and it makes me die inside. stop overclocking until you know EXACTLY what you are doing. the drop in speed is most likely cause by Intel Speedstep. and no, im not going to tell you how to resolve it, because the only way that you will become good at overclocking is to know your motherboard BIOS inside out *before* you even start overclocking.

That's probably Intel's Speedstep fault which lowers the multi for lower power consumption when the CPU is idle. You'll have to disable it in the BIOS. Check your Mobo's manual on how to do that.

if he needs to find out how to do something like that, then he shouldnt be overclocking.

Don't be so harsh on him. It's not like we were born knowing how to OC.

i'm not being harsh at all. you what would be harsh? if he destroyed his CPU or motherboards PWM cicuitry because he doesn't know what he is doing.

That would teach him the hard way indeed. But the proccess of learning includes asking questions among other things. That said, I agree that he should do a little more reading before asking questions about basic stuff.

so i took your guys advice. stopped what i was doing. learned a LOT more. now i know what im doing and am having less problems. im figuring out that the best way to do something new, is to research it online, it IS the best resource, gain some knowledge and do it myself. asking questions i agree is a big part of it....but konwing and being able to be told when im in over my head helps.....so in short, thanks

The easiest way to learn something is to get out there and do it. You can read all the guides on football you like. Doesn't mean you'll be any good at it.

I myself havn't read any of the hardcore OC guides just the basics and atm I'm learning as I go along. I know my way around my bios (not from reading guides I might add) but I know about FSB/frequencies/RAM divids/multipliers ect and about C1E just before I get shouted at >.>. I havn't look at voltages yet so I'll cross that when I get to it. Many motherboards have "auto" voltages anyway so that doesn't require much thought.

Guides can only tell you so much, every boards bios is different.

again, i totally agree. that is how ive learned so much more than i used to know back when i made this post.

When referring to "reading and studying" i more or less mean when i encounter a problem WHILE trying to do these things on my own. It is true. the only way to KNOW something about computers you have to actually have experience doing it. BUT i have been bailed out and learned a lot from "googling" problems i have encountered and asking fellow peers what THEY have done in similar situations. I think it just adds another aspect to the whole learning process. I believe in the virtuous teaching cycle, where people learn from one another and as a WHOLE know a lot. if that makes any sense.

again, im in no way arguing with you. i agree with you. just bringing another point to the table =-)

The smart about mankind is that we are able to learn from other peoples mistake, is there a need to invent the wheel two times?

If we didn't learn from others we would be just apes.

..So, take all the good advice you can and learn all you can, there are dussin people in here with good knowlage and they would more than gladly help you.

Death: hay, are your rig done yet? Are you happy with the case? ;)

OT: Haha yeah it's done but I ended up witth a slight change of plan...

I ended up buying the armour and watercooling :P. But unfortunatly I'm getting terrible temps so I'm still in the process of trying to figure out what's wrong :(.
