Hardly surprising. One of the problems taking over a decade to make a sequel is that it isn't actually made by the same people, and would have to make so many improvements to match the times it wouldn't feel much like a sequel.
Or maybe they're hoping for a nastalgia factor. Hard to feel nastalgia with an "online" DRM.
Hahaha I saw this coming about a mile off. You can tell from the early beta footage with the implementation of the over the top physics, and the lighting and general tone of the game. The graphics look wrong, a lot of the enemy design is completely off-tangent. The voice acting on themain characters also realy does not fit into Diablo at all. The characters shouldn't be saying anything. And when you look at the character roster it's about as mangled up and incoherent as the rest of the design of the game.
Taken out of context if you haven't been on the D3 forums for the past 6-7 months. Also, if you don't know Bashiok, he is sarcastic all the time. However, given its audience, people obviously take everything the most negative way possible. Just read a few topics over at the forum and you'll see what I mean.
If you think online forums are full of whiny, self-righteous players, then you've seen nothing until you've been to the Diablo forums.
Here is a link that will better explain the intentions of the latest messages from Blizzard's CMs.

I don't like that Blizzard can get away with always-online DRM with barely a murmur from the internet gaming community simply because it's Diablo 3 we're talking about. That said, I'm still going to buy the sh*t out of this game because it's Diablo and I'm weak.

I probably shouldn't respond to this as it will dereail the topic, but I'll just say this: Diablo has always had an intense focus in the online community. Online servers are still up for Diablo II, a game that is over 10 years old. MGS: Online, a game that's not even five years old has already pulled the plug. Diablo III will still have an heavily intense focus on the online play as its predesscors have.
I think it's very different to compare "always-online DRM" for games with a heavy emphasis in online multiplayer (Diablo III) and single-player only games (Assassin's Creed).

Huh? When it was first announced a lot of people were irate and vocal about the DRM and the $$$ auction house. Of course there were also many (MANY) apologists - it is a Blizzard game after all.
Other than the slippery slope of Blizard legitimizing the always online DRM scheme, I'm not buying Diablo 3 so I couldn't care less. I also have to admit that there's a part of me that likes seeing companies fleece their most loyal fans.

But Assassin's Creed has GREAT mp. That's okay though, a lot of people rationalize it by saying this sort of thing. The "well nobody should want to play it offline anyways!" argument. I can't do that, so I'm just going to buy it knowing that I'm supporting something I don't like, but I probably won't be thinking about it while I'm playing because I'm sure it will be an awesome game.

If you don't like it then don't buy it, it's really that simple.
There's even torchlight 2 coming out at nearly the same time, brought to you by the actual people who made diablo 1-2.

There are many Blizzard apologists these days. I wanted to buy, yes BUY Diablo 3 but I'm strongly considering not to unless the price drops badly (which, considering Greezard + Activision will be quite a while).
Blizzard is as greedy as Activision but doesn't seem to get a lot of flak for it nowadays. I think before Greezard announced sequels to people's favourite franchises (Starcraft 2 and Diablo) complainers were a bit more vocal (and ironically, Blizzard was less greedy).

I've held many...while there are some funny truisms about stuff like that, it's no where near as bad as people pretend it is. I find that people with such overtly negative opinions like that rarely actually ever worked at a big company before.
Worked for Lockheed Martin, P&G, and a few other notable corporations with very negative public images...the reality of working at these places are MUCH different than reading internet forum posts would have you believe.
With that said, currently working at a mid-sized company atm and it's really cool...beer keg friday and **** like that would never fly at major companies...but like I said it's not that bad. I mean, I think one can find examples of crap like that, but based on my experience those are really the exceptions.
When the developers tell us to lower our beliefs, we know that the game is going to be bad. Let's hope I'm wrong.
If you read what it was actually about (not what that obscure website posted), then you know they want you to have extremely high expectations. When the developers tell us to lower our beliefs, we know that the game is going to be bad. Let's hope I'm wrong.

If you read the entirety of Bashiok's post, it's hard to not pick up on the sarcasm. However, if you're a blog that needs views, it's very easy to take a portion of it, out of context, and get the Internet hits for that precious ad revenue.
Mission accomplished, I guess.
Ah, yes, argumentum ad hominem, my favorite fallacy and a pretty good indicator of an enlightened intellect.
At any rate, I'm sure Blizzard, Bioware, etc., will be just fine with my criticisms of their games, but their fans? They're such delicate little flowers - a little rain and they wilt.

What the hell is "always online drm"? Just online authentication, or some thing where you have to be connected for the internet for the game to run, always?

I think the issue was his statement that he had never played D2...that's like saying you think chocolate cake is better than vanilla while never actually have tried it. In other words, the stated opinion is silly (there are better words but I'll just leave it there).

yeah 12 year wait, too much hype, people expect too much
people expected SC2 to be as perfect as brood war at launch... because SC1 was balanced at launch right? no you fools, it took years of patches (actually there was only 4 balance patches or something, but it still took years)
