Hey guys, so in preparation for GO and with some buddies of mine and myself in our own little clan, do you guys have any tips for being godly at Counter Strike? Aside from, you know, playing a lot. Any little hidden secrets? Servers I should go on? Weapon set ups/loadouts I should use? Shortcuts in maps? Controlling recoil? Stuff like that.

I don't see myself becoming some professional CS player or anything, but I would like to be able to try and get to a level where I can be consistently awesome.

well if you want to be pro likez the great me
if you are in le pubs
crouch spraying rarely fails as long as it's mid -close, not super close where they can circle around you or far where you are sitting duck

when crouch sprayying aim at head first then proceed downwards and the top of your crosshair shud be pointing at their feet provided they are crouch spraying as well, if not, mid chest

If you are going to crouch spray with the ak47, it pivots to the top right, my favorite, ultimate destroy, I've killed like 7 ppl all coming at once in office

if you are vsing actual good people this doesn't work as often, you need to strafe a lot moar, but it still works
and by strafe i mean shoot move shoot yeah

ALSOooooo
avoid any server that doesn't enforce a mintickrate of cl_Cmdrate 66
45 is crap 33 is just random hs galore
cl_Cmdrate in console and you will the server value

the best is when servers used to be like tickrate 80 minimum, the reg was so gud, now almost all servers are piss

EDIT: also do not make your reg settings higher than the server's minimum, you will just die a lot more.

I always find the secret to a lot of CS is sound, get a good set of surround sound headphones 5.1 or 7.1, listen for footsteps. If you know where they are before they know where you are you get the upper hand. Then just learn to shoot in like 3 shot bursts to minimise bullet spray and you should see a good improvement.

Make sure you use servers that don't just give you 16k right away. Competitive CS starts you at $800 and makes you work for your money. This means you need to learn how to use a variety of weapons, and not just the M4 or AK.

Learn what each weapon's strengths and weaknesses are and what situations they are good for. Try to understand the risk in buying an expensive weapon early in the game.

Also learn to AWP. It's extremely important in competitive play. Learn to counter the awp with smoke grenades and flashbangs too.

Thanks for the tips guys. I tend to have some trouble finding servers that aren't doing custom modes on custom maps or whatever, so I've been sticking to bots lately, but once I do get around to getting into a game with my buddies I'll definitely remember these.

I always figured recoil went a bit to the side, but its good to know its not just my imagination. I also very rarely stick to just one particular gun, especially with how well certain guns work on certain maps.

Hopefully Global Offensive doesn't vary in any significant way that I'd need to change my tactics here, but I doubt they'll change more then giving it a nice upgrade in content and graphics to traditional CS gameplay.

Last thing though, any map secrets I should know? Shortcuts or tactics to try in, say, Office?

The recoil is CS:GO is supposed to be much more random (haven't played but a few players have confirmed that I talk to). That aside the weapons you want to learn are the desert eagle, ak47, m4 and the awp (1 shot sniper rifle). The deagle is one weapon you can have every round so LEARN IT!

One easy method to getting headshots off a corner is to learn how far out you need to react. Rather then aiming dead on the corner, place your crosshair out somewhat to give your time to react and nail that first headshot rather then missing trying to get them directly off the corner. Learning when someone is going to quick peak vs run around the corner is important for this (such as when they have a sniper vs a smg).

Try learning to use sound to get the jump on people (walking against them, listening to their footsteps).

I'm not sure if GO has gungame servers yet but its a pretty good way to learn all the weapons and have fun. Just don't expect to be playing against good players or at normal game pacing.

Learn teamwork with your friends, try setting up positions where you can cover each other (cross fire) and baiting people into each other then hiding. CS is all about angles and setting up shots, its what allows two players to shut down a bombsite vs a full team of five.

No need for tips. Just play a lot and you will get the hang of it, like I did.
