I keep forgetting he doesn't care about widescreen. The biggest 4:3 resolution is 1024x768. The biggest 16:10 is 1280x768. I guess I just don't like 4:3 because 1024x768 isn't technically HD, since it's smaller than 720p.

Yes but the difference between 1024x768 and 1280x720 is more or less unnoticeable on a 19" screen, I mean it's still so close to 720p and so much higher res than SD that it might as well be full HD and for the price and his budget I really do think it's his best bet.

The difference between 1280x768 and 1024x768 is 25% more width and same height! I like my wider views while gaming. :)

That's probably better than the Hanns but 500:1 is a really low contrast ratio, I'm not one to base buying decisions on numbers but I wouldn't risk buying it. If you don't care about widescreen your best bet is the Viewsonic it will produce an image that will blow away anything a cheap LCD is capable of and I still doubt you're going to find an LCD that can scale 16:9 to fit a 16:10 screen without some annoying distortion in your price range.

So with a....

CRT Monitor: Awesome graphics, non-disorted image, but its big and heavy

LCD Monitor: Good (not awesome) graphics, disorted image, small and light weight

yup I'd rather have a CRT Monitor

Pretty much, the graphics won't technically be better on a CRT but they will look a hell of a lot better because the colors on a CRT are generally more accurate, whites are truly white and very bright, CRT is the only technology that can produce a true black meaning you'll have awesome shadow detail and super high contrast (upwards of 10,000:1) which will make the colors pop a lot more, and as you stated their will be no stretching of the image (just remember to set your 360's aspect ratio to 4:3 instead of 16:9). The downsides are no widescreen (which you apparently don't care about) and it will be heavy and bulky. So yes CRT all the way, enjoy. Just remember on a screen that size you should be playing within 1-2 feet of the screen if you really want to get the benefit of the HD goodness.

Hmm, not familiar with the brand so that makes me hesitant and it is super cheap which on the one hand is great but on the other makes me more skeptical. I'd avoid it personally and pay for a monitor you know you'll like there's just not enough information to risk that. Then again it's only a $100 so you could buy and then if you don't like it you're only out $100 and if you like it then you came in WAY under budget. Also it didn't look like a flatscreen, dunno if you care or not the difference probably wouldn't be anything too severe.

Whazuppppp, guys...I rather enjoyed reading the back and forth in this thread.

Hey Cloud,

I'm glad you're likin' your BrontoSonyus TV :)  Is it still going to school with yah? *Crackin' my back* phew! 190lbs!

Anywho,  Thought I'ld just put my two cents in.  CTX is an old hat at budget monitors.  I have a very similar 19" KDS CRT Monitor that I used to hook my 360 up to before I got my 32" LCD HDTV.  Those 19" CRT's are killer for gaming!  I say go for it!

Well there ya go, sounds like the man knows what he's talking about. Go for the $100 CTX I say and don't look back.

As for my BrontoSonyus I actually decided not to go that route, though at this weeks price on it at CC it was very tempting. I'm actually buying a nice CRT projector next week so I can get all the beauty of a great CRT projected 60"-70" on my wall =D Oh and yes it is going to college with me, can you say home theater in my dorm?

Yea it's gonna be amazing, I have a nice little 5.1 DD, DPLII, and DTS decoding speaker set-up too that I bought a couple years ago to round out the experience. I don't think I'll have to lock the door, it's gonna be hard for anyone to steal a 100lb. pj without someone in the hall noticeing.

My major is New Media with a minor in Art and a minor in Business, after I have my bachelors I'm going to go to Full Sail or Digipen for a couple years to get a degree in game design.

Thanks man, I would really love to open my open development studio one day but not until I've spent time working at another studio and working on several other games and maybe getting a job as a developer there first so I have plenty of experience. I'm pretty confident I can do it, this is my passion and I think I have what it takes to make it. O and something really bad@$$: the lead character designer at Blizzard got a degree in New Media at the college I'm going to =D

I don't know what these guys are talking about, but you CAN get an HDTV CRT TV for $400.  I got mine at a REX electronics store.  It was on sale for $350!!!  It was $400 with tax.  It's a Samsung CRT 26" widescreen TV.  It has a built in HD tuner and is a widescreen HD model.  It displays both 720p and 1080i.  This was in summer of 2006.

It is possible

First of all I know what TV you're talking about and it's discontinued, you can't find a Samsung slimfit CRT for under $500, second of all it does not display both 720p and 1080i it accepts them and it displays 1080i, you can argue that with me if you like on that but I worn you I will own you.

There really is only one good CRT HDTV and it is huge and made by Sony.  All others are 540p equivelent dot pitch that can't even display a true 1080i image.  Stick with a CRT monitors or LCD monitors and HDTVs for true 1080p and 720p support.

Actually I think Sammy's CRT's are really 1080i (the slimfits are at least, I don't think their older bulkier ones were), they don't hold a candle to the beauty of a Sony WEGA Trinitron though (like the XBR960 or XBR970) or a good CRT monitor. It's funny (sad but still funny) how many people get conned into buying cheap HD CRT's at Wal-Mart *cough* Insignia *cough* and they think they're getting high def for $500 but really all they're getting is big heavy TV with crappy PQ and resolution slightly higher than ED and not even close to HD.

excuse me?

16:10 goes up to 2560x1600... not 1280x768.

The largest 16:9 resolution the 360 supports is 1920x1080... a.k.a. 1080p. And there are 1920x1200 monitors that can accept component video inputs as well.

Who cares? We're not talking about 16;10, regardeless of what resolution it is there will be stretching on a 16:10 LCD monitor and CRT still looks better than LCD and fits his budget alot better.

The black one has a better dot pitch which means it will display a slightly more defined image than the other monitor.  It's up to you if you want to spend the extra moola on a "slightly" better display.  Text will look sharper on it...

Dude, the VGA output can support 1920x1080 yes, but that's a 16:9 resolution. The highest 16:10 resolution that the 360 can output over vga is 1280x768. The 360 cannot output 1920x1200 over VGA. I was pointing out the highest 4:3 and 16:10 resolutions that the 360 can output over VGA. Geez.

Actually if the 360 outputs 16:10 using 1280x768, it'll still be in the right aspect ratio! :P Yeah I know there'll be stretching to fit the screen, but the aspect ratio is still the same!

The black one also has a flat screen, probably not that big of a deal but it would cut down on glare a little and probably result in fewer geometry issues. Like you said nonetheless it depends on whether he see that as worth $70 more.

That's enitrely your call, you're still comming in well under budget. You might not notice the slightly sharper image quality but if you'll be playing in a well lighted room I'd pay the $70 for the flat screen. Think of it as are you willing to give up one 360 game for less glare and a sharper screen you may or may not notice.

Think about it.

What's the one part of your computer you will be looking at the most?

Chances are, it will be the display/monitor/etc.

Of course you should buy quality here.

That's enitrely your call, you're still comming in well under budget. You might not notice the slightly sharper image quality but if you'll be playing in a well lighted room I'd pay the $70 for the flat screen. Think of it as are you willing to give up one 360 game for less glare and a sharper screen you may or may not notice.Cloud_Strife89

good point since I have all the games I want right now, I will be getting the 170$ Monitor. THe only game that I want to buy thats actually released is dead rising. Then I want halo 3, assasins creed and Mercs:WiF but those are far away so thanks for the help! :)

I'm not laughing, when I was your age I bought a 13" Toshiba to replace my ancient TV from the early 80's I had because the image was terrible. About 6 months later though I bought the 32" Sharp I have now because I hated the tiny screen.

im fine with tiny screens, especially to the fact that its just a bed room TV and im sitting 3 feet away from it. Our family has a 45" Tube TV and a 25$ LCD TV just for watching TV and im not bothered of the small screen.

Okay one last question the X2VGA, does it include a VGA cable? because the monitor doesn't and I need that to hook the X2VGA to the monitor?

Wait, if you're only using a 360, why do you need X2VGA? You can simply buy the VGA cables for the 360. That way you can get all the VGA resolutions.

The X2VGA is for using component 480p, 720p, and 1080i/p signals. It converts those signals to the proper VGA 640x480, 1280x720, and 1920x1080 resolutions. It would not work well with a 4:3 monitor unless that monitor accepts widescreen signals well.

I don't remember why the X2VGA was recommended to you, do you have anything else to hook up like a PS3 or Wii?

Edit:
If it's only a 360, you can opt to purchase the Microsoft 360 VGA cables or cheaper 3rd party VGA cables. The Microsoft ones actually include the proper adapter to convert the red/white rca audio signals to a 1/8" miniplug, so you wouldn't even have to buy the Y-adapter and RCA couplers. Third party ones are cheaper, but you'd end up having to buy extras, so Microsoft ones are probably a better deal.

Your original post only said 360 and didn't mention a Wii. I think everyone assumed you were planning to play your 360 with VGA cables, that's why I brought up the 4:3 and 16:10 VGA resolutions. You can still find a widescreen LCD for around the same price as that CRT. It's not the end of the world. :)
