Oh well. I alternate between GPUs. I bought an ATI card last year. That makes it nVidia for the next cycle (midlife). Schweet! If the game is delayed, no problem. Crytek could also change their mind and have any nVidia-only enhancements as a separate patch.

A delay doesn't looks possible; at first time Crytek said in the past that DX 11 will be used only to optimize the performance, and tesellation was "under study" but probably will not be used in Crysis 2 at all. The second reason due a delay would be unexpected is that the "new" GTX 580 is just a GTX 480 with the 512 cores available (the 480 has the last 32 cores disabled) so the GTX 512 is nothing special, barely a 480 with a 15-20% more performance and slight enhancements in performance per watt and heat control.

Also, a few improves in visuals will do nothing for the game and as long as I saw for the mp and sp footage Crysis 2 gameplay wise is a huge step back in gameplay compared with both Crysis and Far Cry.

So... this is just to add more tessellation? If so it better be noticeable, the only games were it is noticeable is on HAWX 2, Civilization V and DIRT 2.

Shouldn't it mean the gtx 680? Since the 500 series will be like the 300 series, and wont be gaming cards.

morrowindnic

no the odd numbers are the refresh lines ad even are the new lines.

so

gtx 200 = new line

gtx 300 (relabeled the 205, so 275, 285, 295) = refresh line

gtx 400 = new line

gtx 500 = refresh line

gtx 600 (tesla) = new line

gtx 700 = refresh

gtx 800 (kepler) = new line

gtx 900 = refresh

etc.

"Enter Crysis 2 and a $2m spend from nVidia's marketing team." This pretty much sums it up, i doubt there will be any significant difference between ati and nvidia, since ati is a huge part of the market, is just nvidia marketing since they have been losing to ati in sells and technology, is like the "awesome" physx engine they tried to use as marketing, it was useless

I like how nvidia is trying to make them create a good PC game. Instead of designing it for the xbawx and porting it over, they are saying, "no. you make this for current gen hardware dammit."

I wish nvidia, intel, ati/amd, had in house game development like sony, M$, and nintendo do. That way we would get some truly advanced games made specifically for the PC.

Goooooood. I want this to be as hardware intensive as the original Crysis when it first came out .. but more optimized like Warhead. .. If that makes sense.

Intel had an in-house dev team and managed to ruin it, their tech and their awesome game.

Well that alleviates some of the concerns I had about the graphics, and as a GTX 480 owner, I should be covered if they go heavy on effects. I still think the overall game looks a bit, eh, worriesome, but hey this is great news as far as I'm concerned.

I don't think the difference will be much different from the high-end AMD cards, but lets wait and see. Don't care for the gameplay, though.

Lets hope by reworked its more than just optimizing. I want prone back in, leaning to be there and a lot of other things that Crysis 1 had. If features from Crysis 1 are missing the game is a fail. I'd like it to have every control possibility and feature and then some....considering this is a sequel. Lets not downgrade it crytek.

Article is complete speculation

they use a quote from 2008 to make their point about a possible PC delay

give me a break. The game isn't getting any special PC treatment, it will be a port.

What Crysis 2 needs is:

-Better gameplay

-Better Optimization

-Weapons that are actually powerful

-Enemies that aren't bullet sponges

They can delay it all they want. It's going to be a step BACKWARDS from the first crysis, no doubt. I bet they could made this game easlily on the first Crysis's engine. really doubt you could load up a crap load of tree's on this new engine and still be able to run. Thank the consoles for that again.

It's not the engine that's dumbed down, it's been improved and optimized. However the game may very well be dumbed down.

You know, I love my ATI/AMD HD 5870. However, sometimes I wish I had an Nvidia card, because Nvidia seems to actually work with game companies to insure that games run optimally on their cards. I think this is why most games run better on Nvidia cards, according to benchmarks I've seen. Every time I load up a game on my PC, I see the Nvidia logo among those shown before the game starts. As an ATI/AMD card owner, every time I see that, I say damn!

Well...

  • Only 6v6 in multiplayer, small maps and no vehicles
  • Suitpowers combined
  • Sluggish enemies
  • Tighter levels

That's the impression I've gotten so far. When I first saw gameplay videos of Crysis it portrayed an incredible feeling of fighting in a vast, natural environment, tricking human, intelligent enemies using the suit modes to your advantage - it made me immediately want that game. I have seen nothing comparable in the Crysis 2 footage. Hope they can prove me wrong...

Rob_101

That would be pretty interesting, but with a developer tied directly to a specific piece of hardware, that game might only be exclusively playable on that hardware or limited in availability (perhaps only obtainable by buying a specific part, etc). It would be like the console industry. The best thing to do is create good hardware that works as well as possible with the set APIs, and for developers to have full support from the API creators and the hardware manufacturers. Also of course, consoles are holding things back, though with diminishing returns on the graphics front, it's not that big a deal, however, there are still a few real big steps in graphics left to be taken until we really reach that point. Probably another 20 years before real time graphics (as in >24-30+ FPS) hits that milestone in an affordable and practical machine.

What we could really use is a renewed interest in computer hardware beyond internet browsing, office/practical applications. It's amazing how people gobble up something like Little Big Planet yet scoff at modding PC games. Yes, it's probably beyond their current mental capacity, but with some time and diligence, anyone could do some amazing things well beyond what template-ed "creation titles" could ever hope to offer. Modding has had a lasting influence on the game industry, as it's created new types of games and gameplay elements. Also the computer is still the go-to place for independent developers. Yes, they can sell via XBL, PSN, or even the Apple App Store, but the PC is where they have to develop these titles and represents their largest share of potential buyers. Even mainstream developers still take advantage of what the PC provides them with multiplatform games. The added resources available in a PC compared to a console, allow them to truly flesh out their visions on an almost endless amount of workspace that then allows them to whittle down their resources to fit on a console platform. Valve for one, highly values this practice, not only because the PC is their main platform, but because from a work point of view, it's highly efficient and useful.

There is also the added problem of consumer intelligence. PCs are seen as overly complex in many ways, and there are many things that could be done to remedy this problem, however solutions like Steam have worked out very well. Hardware seems to be the biggest issue though, graphics especially.

As long as the game runs well without the nVidia stuff enabled I'm cool with it. I think PC gamers should be looking on the bright side though. We've all been suspecting that Crysis 2 on the PC was going to be yet another lazy console port and probably offer no upgrade in graphics from Crysis 1, assuming it even looks as good as Crysis 1 to begin with and isn't just the X360 version with a higher resolution. This interference from nVidia could be them "encouraging" the developers to actually make use of current gen GPUs.
