right now for crysis i have everything on high except these settings are on medium. i'm going to list the ones i have on medium, can you guys tell me which ones, if any i can turn up without much loss in framerate? i'm running it on 1440-900 with about 25 fps. 25 fps in crysis is like 40 in most games, runs great, looks great, but i'd like to turn more things up. the difference between this and everything on high is the difference between 25 fps and 9 fps.

texture - what does that do? i bet that would take away a lot of fps

shadows - makes the game look better - but i bet that takes away a lot of fps

shaders - what does this do? i bet it takes a way a lot of fps

volumetric lights - this is like hdr right? how much fps does it consume?

post processing quality - what is this, isn't this also have to do with lights and things being shinny? how much fps will it take up?

motion blur - is this really only noticed when running? how much fps?

v- sync, this makes the game look like it runs smoother but takes up a lot of fps right?

AA - this gets rid of jagged lines right? but i hear it takes up a whole lot, most games have this off for me

thanks for the help! please let me know what these things do if i don't have them right or didn't know, and how much fps loss for each i'd loose if i were to switch them from medium to high

Post processing and shadows make it look way better, but at a cost you and most computer's cant afford, be happy you have it on medium. You'll gain a lot of fps turning them on low, but it looks bad.

shaders and shadow eat the most performance. Since you have a x1900gt you should have no AA, shaders med, shadows med, and post processing med, you also might wanna go down to 1280x800. If it still doesn't play well then just turn off shadows.

IMO you must up textures to High, because the impact in the framerrate is low and the quality ups a lot. Also the degree of detail in the modelling at high don't cost much more in term of performance.

High shaders increases a lot the global quality in the game, but at a high cost in the framerrate.

Shadows aren't as important: yes, it looks nice, but if you ask the first thing that people reduce in games like Oblivion, F.E.A.R. or S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is the quality of shadows.

Postprocess gives you better motion blurr anddeep of field effects; the cost isn't as high as if you raise the shaders, but the shaders gives more beauty to the game.

The volumetric particles and other fx settings has a moderate cost in the performance, but AA is really stressing to the graphic cards in this game. Also, v-sync isn't a need, Crysis usually flows softly even at low framerrates.

no it runs fine, im willing to sacrafice more fps for better graphics right now is what i'm saying. i guess the real question is, should i turn up any or all of textures, volumetric lights, or post processing without lossing more than 5 fps?

The settings that affect the most the game for me are Shaders, for graphical quality you should keep them on high, because on high the game acquires that photorealistic feel.

I recommend shadows on medium, because on high it only increases the poligon count of shadows, and they look like most games in medium.

I really love post proccesing effects and keep them on high, it has a performance impact but not as much as shaders.

The volumetric effects take a decent bit of power but nothing to worry about.

Also, increasing the textures, barely affects performance, but in my case it gives me stuttering at the first seconds of a level, then it goes I always keep them on high. And for reference this are my specs:

AMD Athlon x2 5200+, 2GB RAM DDR2 800, geforce 8500 gt (your card is way better than mine to give you an idea ;))

wow! i'm going to give this a try later tonight and see. but with your advice, i'll basiclaly have everything on high without AA or shadows or v sync. thats insane. ha i mean i know what ya mean, i played thru the demo about 3 times with 10 fps all maxed out. but when getting the game i have some on med some on high for about 20 fps. and increasing shaders, post proc, vol affects, and textures to high - will that kill my pc? i mean 20 fps is alreayd pushing it...

what's better lowering resolution from 1440x900 to 1280 to save fps, or having these things on med isntead of high to save fps? for the game to look best that is

Actually, shadows are the last thing I reduce in those games. Especially the shadows in Stalker make the game twice more atmospheric. And that means a lot.

well turning those things up on high knocked my fps down from 20-25 to about 12-15, making it not so playable, thats how i played the demo just to experience the graphics instead of the gamepplay. so i ended up turning just the shaders on high and leaving shadows and textures and all the vol lighting and post processing on med. still good consider i have a 1900gt and e6300
