Well Cry Engine is pretty old. I'm guessing you talking about Cryengine 2. That said I say Cryengine 2 for the future. For today I go with the Essence Engine for beauty and speed.

Pretty much what cobrax said. They each have amazing attributes for their particular genre but comparing an RTS engine to an FPS engine is just plain silly.

Seriously. Stop with your "X vs Y" crap. You've been spamming the board with your nonsense.

Cryengine 2. Much more advanced.

CoH "Destructible Environments" aren't all physics stuff. Only preset parts in buildings can be blown up.

P.S. I think we should stick to "which game is better"...... and even then, do it rarely...

Yeah, like we haven't seen engines that were launched with a genre being used in another!
Command and Conquer: Renegade used the same SAGE engine as BFME and the latter C&C strategies, only heavily modified.

The Quake 2 and 3 engines were used for FPS and 3PS games.

And my favourite example: Oblivion's engine was used for games like Civ4 and Sid Meier's Pirates.

I can see how Essence could be used in a FPS, with some smart coding. I mean wtf, at the lowest zoom, it looks better than COD.

what the **** kind of comparison is this?!?!? cry engine 2 easily. even if u made cry engine 2 into an rts engine or an rpg engine it would still kick more ass than the Essence engine beocming an FPS. but hell i love both those games so damn u for making me choose.

Cry Engine 2 is a better FPS engine. Essence Engine is a better RTS engine.

But then again, apples are better at being apples than oranges are, and oranges are better at being oranges than apples are.

When Crytek announced the Budapest studio, that's what they said:

"We think it is a great way to widen our horizons and develop for a new gaming genre while continuing our company's strategic growth and expansion", said Avni Yerli. "It is also an opportunity to further leverage all the effort that our team has put into developing our proprietary CryENGINE 2 technology while building on our tradition of producing the highly innovative and creative kind of games for which we are known."

Hungary has a tradition for RTS games. Go figure.

When they announced Crytek Kiev:

"Now that our CryENGINE 2 middleware has reached the point of maturity where it can be used to support both different types and styles of games, and run on multiple platforms, we thought it was the optimum time to begin work on a new project based on our own new and original intellectual property, and elevate the Kiev operation to full studio status."

What a clearly borked thread. Neither the Cryengine nor the Essence engine are able to simulate critical things like whether an AI entity wants to talk about work or gossip about neighbors or how much they need to go to the bathroom. Sims 2 Engine FTW!!!!

(for anyone who missed it, this response is sarcastic)

I'll never understand why people want to compare engines, all you end up doing is comparing the games that use the engines. An engine is just a tool developers use to make games, nothing more.

Of course not, it's not really appropriate for a RTS (I don't believe, anyway). But in terms of what makes a game engine impressive in general, FPS engines will always by and far outdo contemporary RTS engines. In terms of how impressive they are for their respective genres, I'd still say FPS engines outdo their RTS contemporaries. Considering CryEngine 2.0 is the most advanced FPS engine used right now, it's pretty much topdog among all engines being used for currently released games.

i also cant get my head around the point of this thread?

the first flag to pop up is, you're comparing an RTS engine to an FPS engine. they both operate COMPLETELY differently, they render images, objects, terrain etc differently. they are different, period. you're comparing apples to oranges here.

both engines are great engines for their respective titles. they both compliment their respective games. to compare is either boredom or you're discreetly trying to start an argument of RTS vs FPS / CoH vs FarCry ..

Welll the Cry Engine is getting pretty old, but if your comparing Cry Engine 2, then it wins hands down.

LOL! i just realised what a noob the TC was.

Crytek engine:

* First seen in Crysis.gogators4life

dah, its called CryEngine2 for starters, if you're talking about Crysis. CryEngine was first seen in Far Cry.

another example of why this thread topic is pointless.
