Hi all. Was recently browsing simulation games over at Direct2Drive and I stumbled upon this new release. Looks extremely realistic and interesting but also seems like simply learning the basics of the game will be extremely time consuming. Kinda like the ARMA 2 of aircraft sims it would appear.

Any of you guys know much of the game or have it yourself? It's probably a long shot that I'll ever get into the game but as of late I have been really loving more complex, in-depth and rewarding games. Something that offers a unique experience. I'm just a bit over the mainstream and simplistic stuff now days. :P

The only A10 game I liked ( and for that matter one of the rare few flight simulators ) was A10:Cuba: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2v2Lqqcqmc It had the most amazing physics and controls that no game could recapture even today. You could glide past a cliff, break part of the wing, lose control but still be able to somehow manage flying the beast. You could also break the landing gear if you smash too fast into the ground. I don't understand why almost every "sim" game makes the plane completely EXPLODE if you just so as scratch the ground?

It is a masterpiece. One of the finest flight sims ever made. It's extremely complex and will take you long to learn, but the satisfaction it will give you afterwars is beyond what simplier games could ever deliver.

Hey. Yeah been playing Eve on and off for years now. It's a great MMO. Easily one of the best out there but I am kinda off MMO's now..at least for the moment hehe. Cheers for the recommendation.

I have never played a game like this one. It looks great but there is not much info about it nor many people talking about it on forums. In case anyone else is interested go check it out on D2D. Though it is brand new so the price is $60 I believe.

Been quite a while since you played any sim huh?

And you obviously have not tried DCS:Warthog.

Just a warning though, once you try this you won't be able to go back to flying in ARMA as it will just feel... well, stupid.

Last one I played was IL sturmovik, and it was meh. Sometimes I get to play newer sims but you really need to try A10:Cuba to understand what I'm talking about, it was made a long time ago but it was made right IMO.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about, it's from DCS:Warthog. Supposedly a spectacular crash:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFVG9eiHt5o

Why did half the wing just dissappear? Couldn't they have made it break exactly at the collision point? And then the plane just fades into the ground rather than smear all across the runway in a path of flames and debris.

The plane physics are the most important thing in a plane sim, and proper collision/destruction is part of it.

I have DCS : Ka-50 Black Shark and I can tell you to be ready for a long long learning curve. I'm almost sure it's even higher than EVE. Be sure to have a stick and hope you don't mind reading a lot's. They are the best sims available for sure. I don't know if it is harder or easier than flying the Ka-50, but it's sure to be hard. Even if ARMA 2 is called a sim, it's a WAR sim and not a FLIGHT SIM. Not the same cup of tea. It's also not like other flight sims, where they have several planes, with so-so realistic models. Good luck with it and have fun!

I own KA-50 BlackShark and the A10-C warthog and both are fantastic sims! In Simulation mode they are about as real as you can get so be prepared for many hours of just learning and training. But there is also a Game Mode in both which makes it easier to get in the skys and start killin! I recommend both :)

Looks great. Not sure about the price though. Gonna have to wait for a good deal. And since its a true sim - lol I dont wanna spend too much on a game that I wont like or wont play as much. Im really waiting for Cliffs of Dover.

I've been interested in this series for awhile now, but at the moment I don't have enough time for them. I will eventially buy these though because they look really good.

Basically this. Ive played the origin game, Lock On Modern air combat and Flying Cliffs and learned the basics and depending on how familiar you are with modern sims it can take hours to get the basics down and days more to actually get efficient enough to complete the missions. The control layout is extensive, nearly every key on your keyboard does something and then theres the key combinations as well. I would suggest writing all the controls onto a piece of paper to have with you while you play wiht some other important notes. Some examples for this game you wont see in others like ARMA 2 are a fully interactive cockpit, warning receivers where you have to learn all the symbols, the range of different types of anti air system radars and weapons, etc. Also you will need a joystick for this one TC.

I think this sim will be a tad more involved than the orignal lock on game, that's based on my experience with DCS blackshark. Yeah it's gonna take some effort in learning the aircraft but just like blackshark, there will be plenty of vids on youtube explaining the ins and outs of the game.

Hmmm I'm still very undecided haha. Every night I'll get home after work and think "Hell yeah gonna buy it". Then I hesitate, then in the morning I say to myself I will not buy it.

Good to hear from some fans of the game though! So it's pretty much a requirement to get one of those sticks to get the most out of this game? Man I'm just looking at some of the vids on youtube. Just a few developer diaries on starting up your ship for flights. It's friggin intense and overwhelming. It's ultra realistic and they dont leave out a thing.

Any big fans of flight sims should at least check out this game. It's like nothing I've ever seen. Graphics seem mighty impressive. Also it's getting close to the no.1 top seller over at Direct2Drive. I will let ya know if I buy this and share my thoughts on it.

Thanks for the helpfull info all.

I have DCS: Black Shark which I've barely played.. I planned to get into it a lot, just.. never happened :) I think it's more a matter of getting my joystick and pedals set up properly which I have yet to do.

iirc the tutorials were pretty sillyfor Black Shark, you'd have an in-game video that would show you what to do and then you had to try and memorize everything, right? I can't even remember for sure. I need on-screen walkthroughs until I'm familiar with the aircraft, otherwise it's just tedious. But maybe I'm thinking of another game.

Alright, I know this might sound a little lame BUT is it possible to play in...lol an easy mode? Where you just touch one buttom and the engines are on and stuff? Basically more arcade like but with all the physics and such? I really dont have the time to learn the game. I barely have enough time as it is to play. I know IL2 has pretty good settings to play either as a full sim, half sim, or arcade. Id really like to play more half sim like.

There is a different mode in this one called "game mode" or something like that. Makes things much easier. Also I did hear mention that there is a matter of simply holding control and pressing F12 or something and everything is started up for you, putting you into flight. All will be explained in the instructions booklet of course but yes there is an 'easy' option. I'm assuming simply reading the book will take a day or two hehe.

I see flight videos and I want to buy it..then I see the tutorial setting up videos and it puts me off it haha. I do want to learn it though and find fun in the experience. I just dont think I have the time along with the fact that I'm usually exhausted after work.

I think mainly it's the $60 thing thats putting me off hehe.

$60 is nuts for the type game BUT it is a FULL sim - probably TONS of work put into it. Cant blame them for wanting the money though they are just bandwagon-ing when it comes to the price point of $60. Could probably have gone with $50 just fine.

This sim is for those that want realism above all. But the better flight game I believe will be the new IL-2.

Yes, if you hold down RightWindows key and then press Home the plane will start up. But this does not enable the weapons system or navigation system. Actually BlackShark is easier in that respect as when you do an autostart it turns on everything. 60 dollars does seem like alot and I hesitated too as I am a cheap old bastid and have a hard time paying some of these prices considering I started gaming in the 70's. But this is a full blown sim that is worth the money if you take the time to learn it properly and will give you many hours of killin fun! :)

Yeah DCS right now is the best modern combat flight simulator software. They make versions for the military to use in training. Black Shark and the A-10 are two of the best flight sims on the market right now. I'm personally waiting for the sequel to IL2, nothings better than WW2 dogfights.

$60 may seem steep but this is the type of game hardcore simmers will play for years to come, when you think in terms of "years" of gameplay the price really isnt that high...

just be happy theyre not asking like 400 bucks like that one tank sim did :P

The only A10 game I liked ( and for that matter one of the rare few flight simulators ) was A10:Cuba: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2v2Lqqcqmc It had the most amazing physics and controls that no game could recapture even today. You could glide past a cliff, break part of the wing, lose control but still be able to somehow manage flying the beast. You could also break the landing gear if you smash too fast into the ground. I don't understand why almost every "sim" game makes the plane completely EXPLODE if you just so as scratch the ground?Majd_Abdulqadir

Wow I'm surprised anybody else has ever played a-10 Cuba! It was, and still is one of the top flight sims I have ever played, especially in regards to the physics model and the plane/ground interactions. I wish more flight sims would aim for realisitic ground physics.

That said, I have DCS blackshark and it does feature pretty good helo/ground physics. While I still think A-10 Cuba is better, I gottta say that the DCS series comes close. Also, the DCS series models the blackshark and A-10 at a level that has never before been done for PC's.
