I don't know how long that will be going on for, but if anyone here has been on the fence about whether or not to check it out, check it out. Granted, there's not much there, it's just an interactive story with awesome scenery. But it's worth 5 bucks.

I disagree it's not worth anything, it's just pretentious crap. Just go for a walk around your local coast line and that's pretty much it, and I am sure you will enjoy the walk more.

Seconded, if I lived near a coastline I would be ecstatic, if I had Dear Esther I wouldn't care much. Either way, Dear Esther is garbage...

The narrative and visuals of the game are amazing, ill give it that but the game lasts less then one hour so for 5 bucks it had better blow my freakin mind with amazingness in that tiny little hour. In short the game may be worth like 4-5 dollars at most so dont buy it. im sure you can just watch a video of it somewhere and it would be the exact same experience for nothing.

I picked up a copy. Playing Alan Wake right now and plan to play Rage after that but Esther is probably up after that.

Dear Esther SHOULD be selling for $5 no matter what.

Basically a walk on the beach with a narrative.

It seriously plays like a tech demo.

If you're looking for something different that isn't gamey in the slightest, then it's well worth it. It's a divisive thing, don't expect anything traditional. Because of it being so different and 'ungamelike' it's really up to you in deciding where you want to put your money. Want to try something different, and interested in experimentation? Go for it. Want a game that is clearly defined as a game? Then don't, or read about it first.

Which is an utterly stupid thing to say. Considering the huge amount of theory behind Dear Esther and The Chinese Room's work, it's pretty easy pointing out people making stupid comments, and actual critism. It's almost an 'ungame' and the amount of player verbs are minimal; though that's blindingly deliberate as part of enforcing its narrative - the games focus. Of course it's fine to not enjoy the thing, but it's well crafted and intelligent for what it does with a huge amount of academic papers - including the most comprehensive study into First Person Shooters you will find, to back it up.

I'd argue the game doesn't even 'play' at all in this sense. Everything is there for the sake of story; and that's where the price point comes down.

i unfortunately agree. the game makes absolutely no sense at all. nothing that is said or seen in the game could be formed into anything resembling a coherent narrative. the visuals are indeed amazing though.

The intention was to be deliberately vague; have 3 parallel stories and interpretive information; though it's terrible coherent in its structuring and connected writing.

It's made to be a mystery, that's the point really. In the writing, the visuals and the delivery.

The abstract from the exegesis for the mod - which was a development led research project:

This paper reflects on the design and production of an multimodal, environmental storytelling experiment constructed in the first-person game engine Source. Rather than being based around the resolution of conflicts and acheiving goals, Dear Esther presents a sparse environment with no embedded agents, relying purely on the player's engagement with and interpretation of a narrative delivered through semi-randomised audio fragments. Dear Esther was released for free download via a number of modding sites in June and this paper reflects on the experience of building and the response by gamers.

Wooo academia.

Garbage is that Revelations 2012 game.

Actual interesting stuff which is actually trying to do something with games as we know it - love it or hate it - has a ton more value for gamesthan the next manshootmoney sink, like lets say Homefront, quite frankly; even if that's a ton more of agame.

Probably my favorite thing about it was the music. And my favorite thing about that? All the music and narratives are stored in simple wav format in an easily accessed folder in the game folder. I copied the music out of there and just put it on while I'm hanging out, or sleeping. It's quite soothing.

I disagree. You're paying for the narrative and how they go with the journey. It's more of an interactive tale than a game. Looking at it from that perspective, I really enjoyed it... even at $9.99.

Interesting I've been meaning to check this out, I'm very much a story person first, even at the expense of gameplay. I heard it's one of those ones that you can play again and find many layers to the narrative.

Then you may enjoy this. The narrative is very well done. Even so, you may play with a wanting for some sort of interation, which there is very little of. It is a shame, because the game is graphically very beautiful. I just feel so much more could have been done with this.

It's not much of a game, more like an interactive narrative/story. I thought it was great for the couple hours of enjoyment that it brought me, I considered it well worth the $10 which is the price of your average movie ticket around where I live.

if only the narrative made any sense at all. the game doesnt even TRY to give you the slightest hint of how to piece it all together. you get images and words all over the island with no clue on how they relate to the narrative, and the story being told is so jumbled and vague it doesnt really mean anything at all.

It does sound interesting, I've been reading up about it, and apparently the more you play it, the more the pieces can come together, maybe David Lynch secretly worked on it lol

sitting through it more than twice, trust me, is a complete chore. there is literally nothing to do except walk around... and while the game is beautiful, after seeing it through twice, there is just nothing interesting left.

There is a story there, it's just that you have to be actively trying to piece it together instead of expecting the game to spoonfeed it to you like COD.
Esther is his daughter, she died in a car wreck he caused when he was driving drunk. He's dead too, you're playing as his ghost who's stuck committing suicide in a loop until he can forgive himself.
Anyway, $5 is the most I'd recommend paying for this game. The only game-like thing about it is that the more areas you explore the more narrative sequences you unlock and thus the more of the story you can piece together. Essentially you just play this game for the scenery porn which, to be fair to the game, does get very impressive.

ok then explain all of the scientific writing in the caves.... all of the talk about disease.... all of the talk about Damascus... none of it makes any sense. i am an educated person.... i have taken atleast a dozen english and literature classes.... i enjoy a deep story, but come on. there is vague, and then there is incomprehensible. Dear Esther is sadly the latter. again, the game looks AMAZING though.

The scientific writing in the caves all relates to drinking. The molecular structures you see are ethanol molecules (ie alcohol) and the other drawings you see are neurons (specifically they're motor neurons but I doubt the developer knew that since motor neurons are also the stereotypical neuron morphology shown in media and lower level undergrad classes). Alcohol + brain cells = ??? The talk about disease is referring to the fact that everyone who comes to the island is depressed to the point of being suicidal. Hence the stuff about the disease affecting more than just the body and bringing people to a slow death (takes awhile to go from mere depression to suicide). Damascus just seemed to be a metaphor for his (seemingly unattainable) goal of reaching inner peace with what he's done in the past. There may be more to it, I don't know, I didn't take any literature or theology classes in college. Like I said, the game has a story, you just have to be willing to put in a concerted effort to piece it together. Even if you didn't have the background knowledge to recognize the ethanol molecules and neurons there were still plenty of clues to let you figure out what he was agonizing over, not the least of which were the flashback sequences.

I'd been waiting for a price drop and really enjoyed my playthrough of the game - I don't know if I'll do another one any time soon but it was a strangely engaging experience. Man is the movement speed slow, though, and every time I chose a direction on a fork in the path I cursed myself for picking the one that didn't continue to the next area as it meant several minutes of plodding back again with only one little dialogue clip to tide me over.

Haha. Yeah, a run button would have been real nice. Also, I don't know how many other people noticed this, but you can expand the fov in the menu, and because there's nothing but scenery to look at, it doesn't get noticeably distorted at huge fovs. Makes it feel like you're moving even slower, but you can get some incredible views. I took dozens of screenshots throughout, and use a lot of them as desktop backgrounds.

The chemical structures in the caves are alcohol, although there are some that aren't. Those along with the circuit diagrams are just things that he knew. The entire game was him realizing everything he had done, culminating with his arrival at the radio tower.
