It seems like more and more and more rpgs are online. everyone wants the extra money from the monthly fee. I get excited about a new game and its like oh sorry its a mmorpg. what the heck doesnt anyone make normal rpgs anymore. every fantasy game that comes out these days is a mmorpg. Maybe I am just showing my age. I remember when there was just a handful of mmorpg to choose from. Now it seems like there is so many I cant even find a decent offline game.

Are companies giving up on offline games?

I agree, I think the RPG genre is dead. It has been replaced by games like Mass Effect, Diablo 3, and Fallout 3 which are more action shooter rpg spawn. It's the sad fact that the more developers are making games geared towards the mainstream audience. No longer are RPG's a niche part of gaming, which could be a good thing or a bad thing. They just don't make RPG's like they used to, and this goes for both console and PC gaming.

Well i dont see RPG's dying... ever. Well maybe if every computer tech in the world stoped working and we could never use it again... But then again some people will just continue with Table RPG's in that case...

So no RPG's are not dying or dead or anything like that.

You would probably need to broaden your scope to consoles for fantasy style RPGs. Fable, Lost Odyssey, and Last Remnant (which is coming to PC soon) for example. Plus didn't The Witcher not come out too long ago and Sacred 2 is coming out pretty soon (I am just guessing that it is what type it is).

I will agree that there are a ton of Fantasy MMOs (i wish there were more futuristic/good MMOs), but i wouldn't say the Fantasy offline RPG is dieing, but it is spread around.

I don't believe RPG is dying. If you don't like certain backdrop for current RPG games that doesn't mean the genre is dying. Like, I love DnD RPGs most but now a days no developer releasing any DnD-based RPG game. Should I say, RPG is dying? No. But I can say, good RPG games are scarce.

Few RPGs are coming 2009 or early 2010 that looks promising. Just few days ago a germen RPG game Drakensang has been released - then Rise of the arognauts, sacred 2, last remnant etc. all are RPG games that holds the water.

maybe you need to change your taste or broaden your scope. :)

Diablo 3 is far from a shooter, but i have to say im kinda glad to see turn-based RPG dying out, yes FF7 and some other were great classic stories, but man developers are finally adding the great stories, and adding an overall player needed skills to accomplish any type of fancy battles, no more click watch repeat... and isnt theyre a new starocean coming out im not a 100 percent but i played the first one and loved it thats a good oneplaterRPG for ya

So you're impatient? But I do partially agree... everything's going online now. All these companies see WoW's success and want to tap into that market; unfortunately almost every mmorpg has failed due to the fact that every prospective mmorpg player is playing WoW.

I totally agree. I am sick and tired of FPS, RTS and MMORPG's. I wish more Adventure, TBS and RPG games were released. Nowadays, on average we only get one quality RPG each year.

I miss the good old days with games like Grim Fandango, Monkey Island 3, Sanitarium, Baldur's Gate Series, Icewind Dale, Planescape Torment, Diablo Series, Might & Magic Series, etc.
