I've not bought one since AOE3 and Dawn of War. What's been released since then that would be worth buying?

I prefer games set it older time periods... Something set in the same period as AOE1 would be ideal. 8) I know that's not likely though.

Cheers, I'll take a look at them, :)

I must admit... I bought the first Total War game and while I really liked it, I prefer a more traditional RTS style.

I hear you.

Europa Universalis III is all RTS, but unlike the Total War games, you have very little to no control over battles. The game's also set in the 1453-1710 AD time frame (I'm not sure if that's the same as Age of Empires I).

Cheers!

IMO, I thought EU3 wasn't guided enough. There are no real goals other than don't get annihilated. And even though you can play as hundreds of nations, there's only a few that are satisfying to play as. (Not to mention any non-European country is crippled) For example it isn't exactly that fun to be a tiny landlocked central European country surrounded by larger countries.

But on the other hand you can't do anything totally insane or radical, such as changing Italy's religon to mysticism, or being able to build a complete colony within a few decades.

Company of Heroes, Supreme Commander, Medieval 2 Total War. I guess Rome Total War is closer to the period you want, but I personally prefer Med2.

Cheers guys.

Time period isn't the most important thing, just a preference.

Looks like I've got a few demos the grab!

You should definitely check out Medieval 2. it's an amazingly beautiful game and it's just totally epic.

It would be a waste, I suppose, but the game can technically be played entirely as an RTS - without unit production or resource collection.

You can set up quite intricately planned scenarios (with castles and everything) and just play one off games, and there's a library of famous historical battles for you to fight your way through.

Kinda like just playing skirmish in an RTS.... minus unit production and resource collection.

Anyway, it's definitely worth checking out.

If you like Dawn of War (and who doesn't?) you might want to check out Company of Heroes - it's essentially the same thing but it's set in WW2, and it's a far more evolved, more refined game. Everything about the DoW formula has been improved upon.

Rome: Total War, Medievil 2 Total War and even though its set later on, during WW2, you should check out Company of Heroes. Definatly one of, if not the best RTS game out there.

AGE OF EMPIRES series is good for RTS top list games.:)

Medieval II: Total War or Europe Universalis III :)

BoyarPunk

EU II was awsome, I didn't like EU 3 all that much, they mainstreamed it too much.

But currently World in Conflict is my favorite RTS, its just so much fun, and SO bueatiful.

Got Warcraft 3. :)

Company of Heroes sounds interesting actually. Not normally one for WW1/WW2 style games but if it can be compared to Dawn of War it must be worth checking out!

Don't forget to mention World in Conflict and Sins of a Solar Empire, they add a fresh new look and gameplay to RTS games. Company of Heroes, Total War series are also good.

World in Conflict was fun, visually stunning and had a great multiplayer. But it was shallow. Avoid it if you're a serious RTS gamer.
