So I never played the original Deus Ex. Saw there was -75% deal on steam and got it for 2 euro.

My question is:

Does it hold up well for 12 year old game ? Like should I start playing it right now because its that damn good or is it something that can wait ?

It's my favorite game of all time so I'm biased... I can't even see the graphics anymore... Regardless you should play it. Many many times...

You're either going to love it, or you're going to hate it. It really depends on how much emphasis you put on either its cons or its pros. Because of this, some say it has aged badly, wile some say it's the greatest game of all times.

- Cons:

  • Mediocre AI
  • Clunky FPS mechanics
  • Laughable voice acting for some non-important characters

- Pros:

  • Interesting conspiracy story
  • Multitude of ways to progress trough any given situation
  • Immersive cyber-punk atmosphere
  • Excellent soundtrack
  • Excellent level design

The graphics themselfs look bad, but if you add the New Vision mod (for vastly improved textures), Project HDTP (remodeled objects) and the Direct3D 10 renderer , the game will look really good, especially at 1080p. Oh, and the UI mod , for the GUI to not look ugly at high resolutions.

I say it's one of the greatest games of all times. I have no problem with its AI, the graphics look beautiful with all the mods in place, and i have not played it as a FPS.

yes it holds up like a 12 year old game. No autosaving unless in the begining of every level, saving takes time, diffirent parts of your body get damaged and gotta spend a crapload of crap you find in the ground to heal them, your guns are slow innacurate and low on ammo, you have to stand still for 5 seconds to take a shot, you cant aim down the sights or increase accuracy by ducking, you can die pretty easilly or run out of multiools nad lockpicks. Basicly its hard and unbalanced without efficient controls just like alll games from that era and ofcourse the nonlinearity, complexity and long campaign that comes with those kinda games. Unless you thknks games nowdays are jokes, i would advice caution, this game goes beyond the rules of current games, even back then it was somewhat unsusual, one of the best games i ever played those, second or third to half life.

Well I played it for 3 hours now and i'm getting in to it.For a 12 year old game its pretty damn good.Looks like it has a lot of depth to it.

+ It helps I loved Deus Ex HR.

Oh and the graphics don't bother me that much.Yeah, I guess I'm kind used to eye candy with this gen and all but I've been gaming for quite some time and some of my favorite games like Max Payne and Half Life had graphics pretty similar to Deux Ex.I know how PC games looked back in the day.

And I'm definitely not one of the kids thats been gaming for like 5 years max and thinks:

1. Everything has to look like gears/uncharted/crysis.

2. Graphics > Gameplay

Deus Ex is an amazing game, even to this day. It has aged, everything ages. It is still amazing. That doesn't mean you will like it or even appreciate what it does. Play it if you're interested, simple as that.

The game isn't an FPS. It is an RPG. Dont listen to the people complaining about the shooting. You need to put points into shooting before you can do anything good.

I would also add Shifter to that list of mods. Makes the game a lot more playable imo.

It is good you are getting into it, because you have about 20+ hours left of gameplay. The game is really long, and it is something you need to get into. Note that you will get many more Augs in Hong Kong which will make the gameplay more satisfying. There were a bunch of things that i didnt understand about the game that made playing it more frustrating, along with sometimes unclear objectives as to what you are supposed to do. just stick with it. tons of fun

Overall it is easily in my top5 games of all time. Favorite singleplayer game.

I lol'ed at this: "A little mod that started off as an effort to get the damn laser sight to turn on automatically". That mod sounds pretty neat. Actually so do all the others. Deus Ex is one of my fav games but I've never tried it with mods...

The first few hours are probably the most rough, so if you can start getting your skills right, learning the controls and mechanics, you can get into it well. I'd say play it now before time goes on and it becomes even more archaic, especially since its already considered one of the most dated games right now in terms of playablity.

It's also dated, visually and it didn't age gracefully as say, Max Payne. I agree. Like Stalker games, it starts out slow but it picks up quite well. Nostalgia aside, Deus Ex 1 shouldn't be missed.

Yeah, there are a lot of games with timeless graphics or at least graphics that do an incredible job of not pulling you out of the game at hand. Deus Ex is not one of those games.

It does hold up well, if you are able to look past the fact that it is a 12 year old game and so it is showing its age.

I played it and beat it for the first time just last year. I thought it was one of the best games I've ever played, and I'm planning on doing another playthrough after my exams are finished.

My Favorite moment occured on probably my 10th or so playthrough...Spoiler below (Highlight text if you can't see it)

SPOILER

The moment in NY when the agents are raiding your apartment and Paul (your bro) tells you to get out of there, go out the window and escape to the roof. I did this time and time again without even thinking about. I simply assumed that it was a triggered event meaning that the agetns storm the room when you just leave the window making the moment "cinemtic and exciting". WRONG! I had no idea you can stay and fight and save Paul which in tern impacts much of the story going forward. I was mindblown and shocked that it took me as many playthroughs as that to figure it out.

Best game I ever played...

Visually, it's obviously very outdated. Some of the voice acting is really **** some of it is actually pretty good. The soundtrack is incredible, even though it's old school. But honestly the gameplay is ageless. You just have to put some effort into getting into it at first, and you'll be hooked.

SPYDER0416

Except for the cons i mentioned which have always ben cons since it was released (there were games with much better AI, FPS elements and graphics in 2000, and before 2000) i can't seem to find anything 'archaic' about Deus Ex. Wether you like the game or not, is solely dependent on the importance you put on either its cons, or its pros. Then we consider the fact that the hinder of old gameplay mechanics is absolutely subjective aswell.

Ayway i don't think that's even possible, because graphic mods built by the community will also just become more advanced with time (ex. wen the HDTP is finished, and all models are replaced, then, it'll be infinitely more appealing to the eye then it already does with current mods).

The game already looks really good, modded. I don't know why anyone would play the game vanilla-wise, wen they have the choice to significantly improve the graphics.

ZimpanX

There's also a huge mod with elements from Shifter and other gameplay mods, which also add new weapon models (which look really good).I found it on the Offtopic Productions forum.

But i didn't attempt to add it, because it's a unholy pain in the ass to make it work. I'm waiting for the HDTP to be finished, which will replace all models in the game, including weapons, characters, every single object no matter how insignificant or small.

Wen it's finished, the game will look ridiculously better.

Wait what? so they finished the upgrades... Awesome!

I have the original Deus Ex on my STeam account from a sale 2 years ago. Been waiting for them to finish these ^^ until I went through it (and I wanted to go through it before the new one) I remember you and I had a convo on here about them still working on it.

Do these have any issues with the Steam version? I must get around to this quickly.

EDIT: I see the HDTP project isn't finished yet, so I will hold off a bit more until they finish it. I have other games to work on, unless I find out they aren't working on the HDTP anymore. Then I will just grab what mods I can for it to make it look better, then play it that way.

Well I've spend some time with the game now.Around 8 hours, just got in to Hong Kong and I must say I'm loving it. I'm enjoying it more even then games like Mass Effect 3 surprisingly enough... but then again I do like to explore, figure things out for myself, manage my inventory all the time, have any time save system and actually put some thought it to upgrading my chacrter/weapons. Story is very intreaging too.

Man this game must have been the S**T wen it first came out.

Glad to hear you are enjoying one of the best games ever made, and yes it was the **** when it was released. Deus Ex: Everytime you mention it, somebody reinstalls it.

I have 2 copies of Deus EX on disk I bought brand new in their original box, one of which is the GOTY edition. Also bought the GOTY edition thru STEAM about a year ago at a dirt cheap price. ..It was really something at the time of it's release and always will be one of my favorites...

One thing I don't understand though is about another game that came out around that same period as DEUS EX by the name of System Shock 2, that game was just as highly regarded by critics and doesn't seem to get mentioned nearly as often as DEUS EX....

So I beat it, :) Pretty damn good game.

Kinda dragged a littel bit for me near the end tho.Its maybe because I like to explore the entire levels, get all the items, find all the ways to the objective, read a lot of the stuff ect. ect. I guess the game was a bit "too long" for my playstyle with these type of games.Steam says I've played it for 40 hours.

Also I played it on normal and the game gets very easy halfway through wen you upgrade a lot of your s**t and then a complete cakewalk 2/3 in to the game wen you get even more upgrades. Think that added to "too long/dragged" thing for me.

Think those are pretty much my main issues with the game.Yeah there are other nitpicks like some of the voice acting ect ect but those are easily ignorable .

Great game to play now and it must have been just amazing 12 years ago.

PS. Spoiler:

Like the helios ending the best. :>

Oh and one question, isn't there some sort of secret 4th ending where you can join Bob whats hes face... just seemed to me there should be.

Beganoo, I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the game personally. I only first beat the game 2 years ago and everyone would tell me I had nostalgia goggles when I'd say it has one of the best singleplayer campaigns in a game. Funny how that works :P

It doesn't hold up well at all. Just don't bother, it's not worth the time or the energy. You heard it here.

I see the HDTP project isn't finished yet, so I will hold off a bit more until they finish it. I have other games to work on, unless I find out they aren't working on the HDTP anymore. Then I will just grab what mods I can for it to make it look better, then play it that way.

HDTP is still active, no doubt, because the guys working on it have said so on several ocasions recently. The reason why it's so slow, well, you can check the HDTP section on offtopic productions forums so you can read. At least New Vision is finished. :P

invisible war is pretty bad. The hud covers the whole screen, there are no skills to upgrade. To hack something, you just press the use key. Thats it. No passwords. To shoot, well you just shoot, headshots dont mean much and guns have no recoil or innacuracy, ALL of them use the same ammo, what genous came up with that idea? You can looot corpses, you can pick up the corpse, throw it and pick up either the gun or the ammo clip from the ground. The levels are pretty damn small and sometimes you need to go back and forth, back and forth in order to complete quests. Multitools are lockpicks too. Overall every possible way you can think of to simplify the game in a BAD way, has happened in this game.

I have to say that Invisible War is pretty bad unfortunately. Here's a few main points that I recall not liking about the game.

- Awful art design
- Broken AI and physics
- Awkward controls
- Dumbed down RPG elements
- Uninteresting characters
- Terrible user interface
- Jammped packed with loading screens
- Short in length
- Some compability issues with Windows 7
- Barely feels like a Deus Ex Title

Just save yourself the trouble and watch a playtrough and the endings on Youtube or something.

As a sidenote I experienced both Invisible War and the original Deus Ex for the first time about two years ago.
