It is true that smoking isn't as popular as it was before, but you are insanely ignorant if you honestly think only a "few" people still smoke these days.

the game's version of 2027 is not imagined on from our 2010. it's fiction. if you ever read Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan you would know why the protagonist in the game is smoking.
What if in the game's depiction of the future different things happend regarding tech and medical advances? Maybe cancer is cured. Or maybe lungs are replaceable since there are augmented humans and mechs running around. Hell, I'm positive the game will have drugs/sex and all. You want to start a thread about all that as well?
Seriously, go read Altered Carbon and imagine a proper cyberpunk/futuristic society in your head. Also, the hero, Adam, is seen smoking for like 3-4 seconds in that trailer. It's not like he's walking through the whole game with a cigarette in his mouth. Why don't you think the whiskey glass in his hand was a cheap marketing ploy? I'm sure alcohol has it's side effects. In fact, I think 17 years from now people will not drink alcohol (see how easy it is).
Anyway, it's a really puerile thing to get angry about. He's just a character in a game, much like in real life. He's flawed, just like we all are, and ignorance is bliss. It won't be the first game to depict smoking/violence/misogyny/sex/etc... which can all be questioned. It doesn't mean that these are subliminal messages to get young impressionable teens to put a cancer stick in their mouth.
Tobacco is a billion dollar industry so...
I think they were trying to make him look like snake Plisken. You know that Dorky character from the lamest action film of all time. Escape from New York"Call me Snake."" I wanna meet the Duke" "You can torture me all I like but don't harm Teddy Ruxpin, I confide inhim." Later on Snake's Death bed. "Play his tape for me, play it for me one more time." But unfortunatley for SnakeTeddy ate the tape several hours ago. "TALK TO ME TEDDY! SPEAK DAMN YOU! NOT THE SILENT TREATMENT AGAIN! IS IT THE DUKE TEDDY?! He'll never get between us." Snake's final minutes were spent slamming a dolls head into wall.
Plenty of people still smoke because it's "cool."
Half the time I walk out of a building on campus there are nicotine addicts puffing away nearby.

No, it's cause they are so smart."Here put thesejumper cableson your nipples. What's that? Oh it's not cool, it's AWSOME!Is it badass? Oh it's totally badass."
I can buy that, but - and this is completely off-topic - I don't really feel that this game has the right cyberpunk feeling to it, it feels too clean and perfect, just not as run down and gritty as I like it. But then again this isn't actual game footage so I'll still keep the door open for the game..[QUOTE="mrbojangles25"]
fair enough.
I think for a cyberpunk, film noir game smoking is entirely appropriate.

Anyway, thanks for keeping it civil.
haha I know exactly how you feel.
In the first Deus Ex, the grit was genuine. I mean, there was a plague, corporations ran the world, and it showed...all the locales were essentially the same as they have been since the 20th century, only the tools to oppress the people living there were futuristic.
in the trailer for the new game, I couldnt help but notice A.) all the color, B.) all the shine, and C.) the fact that the environments looked pretty nice. It was too damn pretty
Another pet peeve: JC Denton was the latest in augmentation technology, and Gunter was the old guard. JC had blue veins, but outside of that was pretty normal looking. Gunter was old, and had robotic legs, head, etc. This game (I assume) takes place after the first game, and yet our hero has old augmentations, versus the Denton's more advanced onces.

correction, it is a prequel!
This third game in the series is being built as a prequel, so if you have no idea what Deus Ex is or why it's exciting, then you don't need to worry about playing catch-up to understand what's going on in this world.
IGN
not only that but I'm pretty sure you could 'use' a packet of smokes for yourself, drink booze, and take drugs. The original Deus Ex had billboards scattered throughout the game for I think what was called Big Top cigarettes with a picture of a clown smoking.

the smokes took like 5 points off your health too.
remember, kids...smoking causes -5 damage to chest!
Seeing as how you couldn't walk 10 feet in the original Deus Ex without running into at least one pack of cigarettes (which you could smoke if you so wished) I'd say this prequel is completely in-line with the Deus Ex universe. Hell, cigarettes were so common in Deus Ex that even when wandering through secret high tech labs you would run into packs of cigarettes.gameguy6700I get it I get it! I know smoking fits in with cyber punk as such, but it felt out of place in the trailer, everything else was so clean, nice and perfect looking, the smoking was kind of sticking out which it shouldn't be doing if there was (IMO of course) a proper cyber punk world.
This is nothing new. Don't know why you're making a fuss about one short scene in a trailer.
Game characters smoke for the same reason they cuss, steal, or act violently: people do these things in real life. Game characters have faults so they feel more real. It isn't always done to make them "look cool."
I don't know where you live, but people still smoke. A lot. It's not going anywhere any time soon. Even if tobbaco is made illegal, people will stilll smoke. A lot. Just look at how well prohibition did.
Good for you for not liking cigarrettes, but expecting everyone in the future (or past) to subscribe to the same idealogy just isn't realistic.
Not that Duke Nukem feels real, he is cool in a cartoony kind of way, but that has nothing to do with him smoking.

Imagine a Duke Nukem wasn't a womanizer, didn't smoke, drink, take steroids, or use profanity. Boring.
Part of Duke Nukem's charm is that while he does heroic things, we get the feeling he is doing them for more personal reasons. He kills aliens to boost his ego, to exact revenge because they shot up his ride, or just because it's fun. His vices reflect and convey his hedonistic nature. All Duke seems to want is a good time; everything else comes second.
While you could call him "cartoony," he is certainly easier for most people to identify with than some flawless do-gooder.
I never figured out if the cigarettes had any use. I guess they didn't. Well if you go up to a vending machine and load up cigarettes and keep smokeing them you'll die. You could use the cigarettes as distraction device by tossing them to make noise.
I don't know if the zyme did anything.
The beer and booze bottle could be thrown. They shatter and make noise.
The fact that he smokes is probably just an indication that he doesn't live under the impression that he will live to be 100 years anyways!
I mean, is life really worth living if we cannnot drink what we think taste good, if we cant smoke to relaxe, have sex for the good feeling take a walk when we want to, have diversity amongst people?
Its okay to enlighten people and tell them its bad to smoke, its bad to drink, its bad to eat, its bad to... Well basically LIVE!
If we go through our lives, and we follow EVERY rule/advice given from doctors and scientist, we could probably just replace humans with robots.. No need for humans, if we cannot choose how we want to live.
When we are given birth to, we are dying, thats basically life, its about accumulating experience untill our short time on earth is over. Sure we might live 20 or even 50 years longer if we follow every rule that doctors/scientists can think of, but we might just as well get hit by a big facking truck, and then its all OVER, and what about our experience?
We didnt have sex, we didnt drink we didnt really try anything, cuz its all dangerous and might make our life shorter, but instead we have the possibility of living to be a 150, just not in the case, with the big facking truck smahing your body into pieces and ending it at year 20!!
So I say to all of you guys, carpe diem, you dunno if we all get nuked tomorrow, we might all be dead in an hour, so appreciate the life you have right now, and worry less about all the dangerous things in this world and start having fun, otherwise you might end up with an empty life in the end..

Health reasons aside, a smoker is literally a slave - they feed money to a corporation, and there is not a lot they can do about it once they start. That's not expressing yourself or 'accumulating experience,' it's just throwing money away.

I wonder where does that 88 come from.
We should steer this topic towards a more constructive argument, such as how pretty the newscaster in the trailer is.

I think you are misunderstanding my whole point, its not about throwing money away, its about IM THE ONE who decides if I wanna throw my money away, no1 should tell me if I should be standing or sitting down while taking a pi$$, I know its probably more safe to sit down- but where is the fun in that?
People can be strange, but why try to use reasoning to understand them. Some people (the portion that smokes is some of the population) have egos and with anego comes image. They're all image. They think they are entertaining you. They think you really careto knowwho called them, who they saw and whatever it was they ate for lunch. So when they begin smoking it's because in their minds they are entertaining you. They're SUPERSTARS!
I guess they keep doing it because habits/addictions or whatever you like to call them are hard to break. Constant smokers do it because they have nothing else to doapparently.
Well the first game was even further in the future and it had smokes. They did not have any use though, they just damage you. One can complain that the trailer had that "bad" moment but no one complains that the smokes in the first game were nothing but poison. Weird eh?
Also you can tell by the technology and the era that the game takes place, that its not historically thought out to represent reallity. We sure as hell wont have all those things they showed in the trailer. Why not saw us the usual guy smoking and drinking? Its the same thing we see in many games and movies. Nothing really new or important.
But the only reason the amount of people is lower than in the past is the law and the medcine world keeps telling us that is bad. Deus ex takes place in a dark future that there are riots and plagues. Its not civilized enough for the law to bother with public smokers or "keep it clean" for that matter.
I don't smoke but personally I'm glad it's in the game.
I say **** you to all the annoying rights activists that try to get these things censored out of game. It reminds me of Isaac Asimov and his Robot/Foundation series where people almost always had a cigarette on hand. I like it, it's classy.

You said it man! Foundation for the win! :)
any smokers out there try E-Z Quit yet? i don't smoke so i can't really experiment :P nor want to
i see it in tv commercials ocassionally
Really? Did this just turn into a smoking debate? Yes, most smokers do it because they pretty much "have to" but a lot of people that smoke, specially those that smoke "socially" either do it for a) get drunk faster(hence social) or b) It relieves stress. Trust me, I don't chain smoke ever, but I smoke when to calm myself down a bit and it works wonders. Not saying that everyone should do it because of this but you can't just say that cigarettes don't have any use other than kill you.nintendog66
Install a punching bag in ur house, heaps more healthier....lol :)
He's still smoking a cig in 2027 because he wants to enjoy that cig. We've smoking for thousands of years, were not about to stop. Excuse me while I go for a cig.
