So...I just finished Deus Ex a couple of days ago. I had a lot of fun with it. It's definitely one of the better games I've played. I installed Invisible War and have played it for about an hour, but so far it doesn't have that magic the first game had. It's not that it's bad. It just seems like it's missing something. I loved the strong rpg element of Deus Ex, but it seems to be missing here. Kind of like the difference between Mass Effect 1 and 2. Does it get better?

You're having the same reaction almost everyone else had. Invisible War is good unless you compare it to Deus Ex 1. And yes, a number of the RPG elements are missing.

Its not terrible just a weak sequel. I can't see how anyone could justify it being better than DX1 - I'd like to hear some justifications though in seriousness.

Reason 1: Better graphics. Reason 2: Better gunplay. Reason 3: Freedom of choice. Reason 4: Better story. Sure, it has less rpg elements, a dumbed down skill system, and its length is shorter overall, but the 4 reasons I provided are enough for me to enjoy Invisible War more than I enjoyed Deus Ex.

The Nameless Mod's story and setting takes quite a while to get used to, but overall it is one of the best mods ever made and won ModDB's SP Mod of the Year Award for 2009. I would check that out before trying the sequel.

Uh uh...the story is NOT better. It is very poorly linked to the original, for instance the way Tong changes his mind about his actions in the previous game and the awkward change in personality of Dumier, DuClare and other characters. Even the developers themselves admitted that the setting of the game was rather obscure in relation to the franchise because of its high level of fantasy - it was not nearly as believable as the original game. Those 4 reasons never existed for me, except for the visuals. But that's because i expected to play RPG/Stealth game with loose FPS elements, which is what Deus Ex is..

I could say something similar about Mass Effect 2. Patheticaly weak RPG elements, but overall a good game.

Those are very generalised points, except for visuals yes. Better gunplay for example: what about the disastrous universal ammo idea? Or the weakened stealth aspects and poorly balanced powers (like the invisible one, run through a whole level to trigger off a scripted event for example). Freedom of choice: DX1 had that in spades. I really don't remember 2 expanding on especially if it had weaker rpg elements like u said.

I've played through both Deus Ex and Invisible War at least 5 times since they released. I'm pretty sure I know my own opinion quite well, so those videos will surely NOT change my mind.

"Kind of like the difference between Mass Effect 1 and 2." More kinda like the diffirence between kotor and mass effect.... Are you implying mass effect 2 is clearly worse than the first? As for 1 hour? LOL, thats actually the good part, then it starts to take the downhill and turn into worse and worse all the freaking time.

"better gunplay" As terrible deus ex's gunplay may was. Invisible war is far worse. All the guns use the same ammo, no headshots, atleast with pistols and you pretty much end up in a gunplay with no skill involved and an ai that drains your health extremely fast. "freedom of choice" What you mean? I thought it was far more linear with less freedom, to a point that its actually distubring that they made it that way. As for story? NO, just no, no way this is better than the first, especially how they mess it up near the end and i personally believe that is the reason the new one is a prequel and not a sequel, they mess up everything.

You certainly know how to quickly destroy your chance at any credibility here in one shot.

And really, the IW graphic engine was weak for its time. It couldn't even do water (which is why they made everything frozen.) And I don't even need to bring up its need to divide the levels with loading areas again. . .

I never had a problem with the way the stories tied together, and I played Deus Ex and IW back-to-back. I actually enjoyed some of the change.. there was one option in DE that seemed to be easily the best option, and it was given an altogether different perspective in IW. I'd say I liked the characters and story better in IW. I can't even recall how the combat played out, though. I suppose it was easily forgettable, then.

I for one would be genuinely intrigued if you were to describe to me exactly what you think makes the sequel the better game. Those reasons don't exactly stand for much.

All we (DX1 fans) are doing is trying to get solid reasoning out of people. Its too easy just to say 'I like X better' without explaining it. Its also becoming harder for the minority with the developers admitting their mistakes with 2.

A bit random but yesterday i was playing a random game, not important. As i was collecting ammo, invisible war's universall ammo came in mind. Then something happened, i asked myself, who in his right mind would put the same ammo for all weapons? I mean come on, whats wrong with placing various ammo types in the level instead of the same everywhere? What is the reasoning for having the same ammo for pistols, shotguns and rocketlaunchers? Kinda defeats the point of having all those weapons.

Wow. Just watching that interview with Harvey Smith for the first time: I don't think I've ever heard a developer speak so openly and honestly. That was really frank. Its worrying that he's not involved with the third game. If he was it'd probably be closer to the first.

I loved Deus Ex and still have it as one of my all time favourite games. I bought Invisible War as soon as it launched, but got very little out of it before putting it down. The number of changes and the console feel just completely put me off. It was only at Christmas with the Steam sale reminding me of it, and the upcoming Deus Ex Human Revolution that I decided to dig out my disc and give it another go. It now feels like a much more playable game than I remembered, though a few things have changed - I haven't just replayed Deus Ex, so it isn't fresh in my mind, and I am now much more familiar with console gaming and the changes that makes on a game. Where Deus Ex was very much a PC game, Invisible War was very much designed for the xbox, and was one of the earlier games that had been PC games to put the console version as the primary one.

Invisible War is a disgrace to the Deus Ex name.

As others have said, it is not exactly a bad game, but its not a good game, and definately no where near the first in terms of quality, enjoyment, story, and roleplaying

Imagine a world where there is a brewery that makes the most wonderful beer in the world. Its malty, has a good balance of hops, and is refreshing and wholesome. Everyone likes it, from Joe Sixpack to the harshest critics out there.

What if one day your beloved brewery started to bottle piss instead and sell it to people. And, even worse, what if these people enjoyed it. They drank it by the gallon even though theyre drinking piss.

Wouldnt you feel compelled to tell these people: "Hey! Youre drinking piss! Thats not beer; this used to be a good brewery, now theyre pissing in your mouth and youre loving it!"

Hehheh, you could tell the same about half the games outhere and their sequels to the old classics.

The problem is that some people like the new "piss" because the old brew is too rough for them. Kinda like my situation with oblivion and morrowind

Ok, that made me smile and it pretty much sums up how I feel about 99% of the modern RPGs released.

It still is ahead of its time. Not one game - not ONE game apart from IW has had so much non-linearity with so much immersiveness. It is that balance between the two which puts it in a league of its own. On a side note, though I am repeating a much said thing, the Nameless Mod should be put right next to Deus Ex in quality and playability. It has literally more content than DX and in some places is better designed and thought-out.

Good beer isn't going anywhere, though.

it is if people spend their money on piss and not on good beer :(

I don't know what the market is like these days, but it seems like good beer has been around forever. I have no trouble buying my favorite beers, despite the popularity of piss like Budlight and Budweiser.

oh I thought we were still talking about my analogy lol, not beer in reality.

Hell yeah, in fact, studies show that Micro- and Craft-brewed beer sales are up like 10%, whereas the sales of macrbrewed beer (coors, bud, etc) are down.

I never have problems finding good beer; I dont get a lot of the good Northern California stuff, just a little, but yeah overall I could not be happier as far as my beer life is going.

Invisible War was an oversimplified pile of garbage, I'm sorry, the levels were smaller, the skill system died, the interface was shoehorned in from the xbox, the story was good yes, and the graphics improved, but that is all it had going for it. It got consolized in the worst way, thankfully the team behind Human Revolution has echoed this sentiment and is using the original as the guideline.

I don't even drink beer. :?
The problem is that some people like the new "piss" because the old brew is too rough for them. Kinda like my situation with oblivion and morrowind

dakan45

So you like the new "piss" (Oblivion), and Morrowind is too rough for you? That is exactly what YOU just said.

YES, thats exactly what i said. It was actually a defending point on what you are saying because i am not one of those people who scream: "omg dumbed down for console users, its crappy the previous over complicated and hardcore games is so much better, go play it i dont care if you dont like it" I think there are reasons for someone to enjoy a new "dumb down" game more than the "classic" one. Pretty much pointing out that some people dont enjoy some flavors for "whatever" reason. Thats exactly i am not gonna say things like: "oh you dont like beer, thats weird" or something similar, because i understand that some people just dont like some things no matter how the next guy says that they are amazing.

Invisible War wasn't a bad game, per se. It's just that it was a big disappointment when compared to Deus Ex original. It wasn't the kind of sequel a game of that stature deserved. Perhaps it can be partly blamed on being developed for the Xbox original, and having all of those hard loading screens all over the place, but I think that it also suffered from a lack of originality. That and the crazy optical-overlay and the universal ammunition which made zero sense.
