Check it out:

*links removed*

In my opinion any previous complaints that this ain't Diablo as we remember is squashed...looks fantastic. The desert looks and feels like the one outside of Lut Gohlein, of course with updated graphics and new effects...the sand shifting around was particularly impressive.

*edit*

Looks like the videos were taken down by gametrailers...

Here's some other links though (although the site is really slow)

http://www.spike.com/video/diablo-iii-gc-09/3230265

http://www.spike.com/video/diablo-iii-gc-09/3230264

And this is what looks like an extended video (same stuff just starts earlier) but worse quality:

One word...awesome. Can't wait for it, it looks way better than it didn when they first announced it, especially the HUD.

Looks interesting, they kept the same UI basics. Waiting on some longer in game videos though (non promotional).

I'm agree that in gameplay looks better BUT still I find two points to disagree: the character pace running looks slower than in D II -can be because the class and low level- and the 2D icons from the skills and inventory looks much worse than the deatailed 3D CG rendering ones from Diablo II. Yes, in the new game the resolution is much bigger, but they spent a TON more work drawing armors and weapons in maya/3Dmax than in the new 2D pictures to all the items and skills.

As I see, the inventory art is much closer to Warcraft III or any average MMORPGs than to the top-notch, state-of-the-art CG designs used in Diablo II LOD. Aside from this, the enviroments looks awesome. I will still buy it day one no matter how will be, but I'm feel free to critize the aspects in the old game that I miss.

I've heard that before (regarding items in inventory) and have looked at both before...I think it's silly. D3 looks much better in that regards.

"state-of-the-art CG designs used in Diablo II"

That's a joke, right?

asd

There's nothing state-of-the-art about this...it's great art s.t.y.l.e...but even when Diablo 2 was first released it wasn't exactly on the cutting edge of graphics technology.

dnuggs40:

All those items were modeled in 3D and then rendered; the process is much slower and costly than drawing it directly. The new items and inventory looks sharper because has at least X3 the resolution (1680 x 1050 or more vs 800 x 600 in D2 LOD), but if they were using the same techniques of 3D rendering the games items and inventory would be X10 more awesome. Also, the lack of human corpses in the enviroments is a bit "disturbing" to old fans as me :p

The joke **** with ponies and clouds were a bit creepy to me. My suspects are that they will launch the game both to PC and consoles, and they maybe are making sacrifices in art style and maybe gameplay to fit the "13 years rated" pad drived versions >:

I know how they were rendered, I am talking about the end result. Diablo 3's items look better...and even back in the day when Diablo 2 was first released it wasn't the prettiest games out there.

It's also PC only, and there are corpses...some of which the player looted (exactly like in DII). Did you watch the videos?

(it's 20 seconds into the first video...they even roll over when looted just like in DII)

Lack of human corpses? I was amazed that they used the same formula as Diablo 2, with those guys in red armor and we only saw parts where there should be no corpses or just a small number of them. How many corpses do you expect to find in a desert, in the first level of a dungeon (first level, not the lowest level where there should be bosses and lots of gore) and a forest? And imo, about the art style, quality of models, you're exaggerating, I know nostalgia makes games look a lot better than they actually do but this...It's like saying, yeah D3's textures/models art style, looks great but imagine all that ported on the software/hardware that will be available in 7 years with even more detail than they originally had.

Probably because Diablo 2 is a very popular game (to this day)...one that pretty much defined a genre? And the sequel appears to be shaping up very nicely? I really don't see what's so hard to understand...even if I didn't like the Diablo series i would have to be pretty daft to not see why people are psyched for it.

THA-TODD-BEAST

Diablo games are more about the sanctity of slaugther & the phat loot than the story, and they are the best at what they do. Very few games have managed to let people waste much time on simply hacking, slashing and shooting everything that moves, yet Diablo&Diablo 2 kept a lot of people playing for what? A handful hundreds hours or more, using only 4+1 acts, a ****load of items with barely any difference other than stats&name, the infamous MF stat and 7+2 classes.

No surprises in people being excited about it.

Personally, I really hope it will deliver the same amount of playtime the second one did, if not more.

What is GamesCom? Is Joe Public allowed to attend this thing? Diablo 3 is that far advanced - that Blizzard is actually allowing Joe Public to play the game? This must mean a 2010 release?

What is that? A paladin/sorceress mix? It looks very similar to Diablo1/2 in that your character has a couple skills maxed out and just uses those. I never really liked that, what use is it to create so many skills if you're never gonna be using more than 2 of them on each character? That paladin was firing those orbs like a machinegun, and not much more was happening.

They give you all those skills so you build your character around your play type. And anyone who is good at Diablo 2 has at least 4 or 5 skills which help them out.

I think it was the wizard...and I saw (in the extended clip) him shooting what I am guessing is magic missles, doppelganger, fireball, and some kind close range attack that looks like something from Fist of Northstar.

Yes but usually 2-3 of those are regular attacks that you use, the rest are passive or situational skills. Comparing to RPGs in which you actually use all your skills, it's so much more exciting if you're not just spamming frozen orb or whatever that was. It seems like an outdated mechanic, and lazy balancing.

I don't think there is anything lazy about what we have seen so far in D3...it looks like a tremendous amount of effort was put into the game...even at these early stages. And like I stated about, there were 4 different active skills I saw being used.

You also have to remember the new skill system allow players to augment existing skills with runes, which can fundamentally change their behavior. They have definitely expanded on their already great formula...

http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/55258

Seriously...watch the video and how they are expanding on the skills...most of them fundementally change the skill...giving the players even more options.

So how do you propse to make it better?

Anyone who plays in Hell difficulty knows that spamming spells = suicide. There is actually some strategy involved, and a teammate really takes off a lot of the burdens. The game is very well balanced IMO, and all the cl@sses are fun to play as. Diablo 2 was ruined by cheap bots hoing in and running the game for you, and buying rare items off of 3rd party websites.

Pretty simple. I propose the skill system is designed such that you can max out 8-10 attack skills, rather than have to rely on just a few.

So a sorceress would just max out all of the big spells, or just one big spell, and 7 crummy ones?

I like Blizzard's current system. It allows more creativity, and allows your charater to be different than others.
