I recently purchased and downloaded Episode 2 off Steam. However, every time I start the game I see the Valve logo and before the game gets into the menu screen, it crashes.

I get a message saying that I need Direct x 8.0 to play this game. Unusual since I can play both the original game and Episode 1 without any problems.

What is going on?!

Anyways, if anyone can tell me where I can get this version of Direct X for Windows XP, I would really appreciate it. I have had serious trouble trying to locate it.

Please someone make my day and help me out.

Thanks.

I have already tried that.

Nevertheless, I won't hurt to try again later. Thanks for the info.

Whats your video card? Im gonna assume you have some really old card that only supports up to DX7, which works for Hl2 and EP1 but not with EP2.

I have an old NVIDIA Geforce 4. Nevertheless, I have direct X v. 9. I have checked the system requirements for the game and I am covered.

Incidentally, dealing with Steam support is a pain.

Try asking on the forums at www.steampowered.com and they will probably solve it quicker.

What video card are you using? If it doesn't support DirectX 8 or higher, then you're out of luck.

Valve decided to up the system requirements for EP2. You now need DX8 hardware or better, if you have a GeForce 4MX it is only DX7 hardware. The good news is a replacement DX8 or 9 videocard shouldn't cost you too much money.

ya that card supports DX7, the numbers say you have dx9 drivers in dxdiag but it only supports up to 7 so anything above that isnt utillized ... HL2 and Ep1 only required 7 as my old craptop could even run it. Like he said they upped the ante a bit and made it dx8 required ... www.newegg.com if you dont know anywhere else to get a new GPU ... even DX9 cards arent much these days ... i got my GF a nice 7600 GT factory OC'd card for like 80$. The only question is, if your on a laptop you cant really do much with that, and does your PC have a PCI, PCI-e, or AGP port. If its the first your dx9 cards are going to be limited because well PCI isnt used much for GPUs anymore. AGP is getting old but there are a ton of cards still out for it, try looking for a 9800 pro those are classic beasts. Hope that helps. If you have PCI-e might as well get like a nice 7600GT or something as they are pretty cheap now.

yeah wierd, cuase it should work on your card, cause it was made for Dx8.1

Did you know lots of CAL players in CSS use Dx8 cards, casue of the shadow factor. You can see some people through doors and walls cause of shadows coming though.

EDIT: MX series has Dx7 support, not regular GeForce 4 series. I didnt see it was MX series of the 4 series card you had.

Just got back from work. I'm screwed.

I have a Geforce 4 MX series. Looks like I'll have to wait for the PS3 version.

Oh well, I want to thank everyone for all the useful info.
