Could someone weigh in on the quality of the bonus levels of the BFG Doom3?
If they aren't all that great then I think I will just get the ID pack in the next winter sale from steam that has the original in it. I like having to switch to the flashlight anyway. It was a nice refreshing mechanic. Though logically you would think by the time we got to Mars we would have a freaking flashlight mounted in the armor. Seeing as how miners use them on their hats anway lol.
But it had more tension I think with the flashlight not mounted.

Exactly. That flashlight mechanic did way more for the atmosphere and tension than people seem to give it credit for. It wasn't about "jump scares". It was the tension created by going through dark areas with the flashlight, and needing to either use the flashlight as a club when you found an enemy, or switch to your gun and fire into the dark, or make the thing chase you into the light. It gave the darkness real meaning. It made the dark feel ominous. Not like it was just a simple obstacle, overcome by pressing "f".
I don't think that specific type of game works for a game like Doom. Having to switch back and forth between the guns and the flashlight didn't add anything to the games atmosphere. It was simply a very annoying game mechanic that got in the way of the action. It also doesn't help that in the far future, marines don't have built in lightsoruces on their suits or guns. The Mars base is incredibly poorly lit for some weird reason, so it would make sense for that stuff to exist. It's ALSO really stupid that no one is smart enough to simply duct tape the stupid dinky flash light to their guns. The concept of having to equip the flashlight makes no sense at all.
I agree with both very heavily.
I think they could of done more to incorporate it.
I think you could have a light on yoru suit, cause the era would dictate there to be. But what if it was malfunctioned, or broken, and you have to replace it later on in the game.
Until then you have to switch back & forth between gun & flashlight, leading the enemy into the light as well. Finding tape, to tape it to the end of the gun, but have to re-apply as it comes undone when enemies hit you.
This way it does add to the atmosphere, and doesn't quiet undermine the era. Just my opinion.
