The notion that a computer game could be a terrrible port of a game released on the same platform only seven years ago seems silly indeed. However Doom 3 BFG Edition is a terrible port and please do not buy it. I feel scammed out of my $30 for the game. Why you might ask? The only chanagable graphics options are the Resolution, Frame-Rate, and Anti-Alising. No Textures, Lighting, Geometry, Draw Distance, Field of Fiew or anything like that. The game looks terrible because of this.

Graphical Options:
The Graphical Options for Doom 3 BFG Edition

Here is what Doom looks like running on my Computer:

This image is with my nVidia Control Panel forcing 16x Antistropic Filtering and 8xMSAA. *EDIT: Motion Blur was disabled when I took this picture.

I even tried to find a editable configuration file where I could manual change all the graphical settings in the game's folder with no avail.

Sad to see such a great company going downhill, first RAGE had no graphics options at all (untill they added it in a patch becuse it was demanded by people) and now the BFG Edition of Doom 3 doesn't have it + what's the point of the Doom 3 BFG edition on PC anyway ? you can't even mod it according to some people. Normal Doom 3 allows you to play co-op thanks to mods, enhance the graphics to make the game look up to date and it's cheaper then the BFG edition.

Why would you want more options in such an old game? Are you seriously implying you would put anything on lower than the highest settings?

And yeah, they f*cked with the art styIe.

Isn't the game powered by that so-ugly-my-eyes-commit-suicide engine they used for Rage? It sure does look like it. Sheesh

The original looked much sharper, and detailed. This is sad, maybe there will be a patch.

I thought the original version had more options than that - how can they screw up a port when it was on PC already - or is this just sheer laziness?

That's a pretty nasty lookin pic. Original Doom 3, modded to hell, looks way better. Plus, I read the BFG Edition has the "armor mounted flashlight", which ruins the tension of the game, and there's no option to go "classic flashlight" style. The only reason I was interested in the BFG Edition was the "new levels". Are they totally new levels, added into the game? Or are the original levels redesigned, Black Mesa styles?

That's rather terrible. What the hell were they thinking?

Then again, does it really matter? Aside from the FoV, you can still tune motion blur, AA, and set the resolution. You shouldn't have to turn down settings if you're running it on a decent gaming machine.

That's stupid. Console gamers do not care about Doom. id should have just gone all out to make the PC version the best that they could. Maybe they would earn some respect back from the PC crowd after their whole Rage launch fiasco (which ended up never running well on my system).

Thanks for the warning, scratched off my purchase list, at least for the time being...

A shame, since I was really looking forward to having the entire Doom collection in one place. Still, maybe I'll end up picking it up when it's dirt cheap... :(

It wasn't in either my priority buys or spare cash buys lists anyway, but I was interested in it enough that I could impulse buy it. Now, seeing all the screenshots posted in this thread, I'm not going to. Thank you DarkGamer007 and Baranga, you've just saved me $30.

I still have my old Doom, Doom 2, Doom 3 plus expansions and I think I will stick with them. I don't know why anyone who already owns them would buy the BFG package anyway. Few new missions aren't worth $30.

It's 20 dollars on Steam if you already own Doom 3.

Also can someone please say what other graphical options they want? I think my toaster can run Doom 3 at maximum settings.

Lighting, shadows, facial detail, character models, texture detail, reflections, for a start. I'm a man who likes options. I don't see why it has less options now than it did in 2004. That's just silly.

...what facial and character details? It's Doom 3. They reworked some textures, characters and sounds anyway. I'm sorry, I'm probably an idiot but I don't see any reason why a downgrade option should be there.

On the other hand they removed the flashlight shadows and you can't play the old games if Doom 3 is installed on consoles. The remake is definitely strange.

I foudn the file, but the file still only limited to a few options, and the game instantly overwrote them when I ran it.

Could someone weigh in on the quality of the bonus levels of the BFG Doom3?

If they aren't all that great then I think I will just get the ID pack in the next winter sale from steam that has the original in it. I like having to switch to the flashlight anyway. It was a nice refreshing mechanic. Though logically you would think by the time we got to Mars we would have a freaking flashlight mounted in the armor. Seeing as how miners use them on their hats anway lol.

But it had more tension I think with the flashlight not mounted.

Exactly. That flashlight mechanic did way more for the atmosphere and tension than people seem to give it credit for. It wasn't about "jump scares". It was the tension created by going through dark areas with the flashlight, and needing to either use the flashlight as a club when you found an enemy, or switch to your gun and fire into the dark, or make the thing chase you into the light. It gave the darkness real meaning. It made the dark feel ominous. Not like it was just a simple obstacle, overcome by pressing "f".

There were always little lights to guide you in the darkness, either environmental or from the monsters. It was smartly designed.

I don't think that specific type of game works for a game like Doom. Having to switch back and forth between the guns and the flashlight didn't add anything to the games atmosphere. It was simply a very annoying game mechanic that got in the way of the action. It also doesn't help that in the far future, marines don't have built in lightsoruces on their suits or guns. The Mars base is incredibly poorly lit for some weird reason, so it would make sense for that stuff to exist. It's ALSO really stupid that no one is smart enough to simply duct tape the stupid dinky flash light to their guns. The concept of having to equip the flashlight makes no sense at all.

I agree with both very heavily.

I think they could of done more to incorporate it.

I think you could have a light on yoru suit, cause the era would dictate there to be. But what if it was malfunctioned, or broken, and you have to replace it later on in the game.

Until then you have to switch back & forth between gun & flashlight, leading the enemy into the light as well. Finding tape, to tape it to the end of the gun, but have to re-apply as it comes undone when enemies hit you.

This way it does add to the atmosphere, and doesn't quiet undermine the era. Just my opinion.

Does it look as good as the original maxed? Somebody was saying the shoulder mounted flashlight doesn't even cast a shadow any more? I heard the sounds are different (worse) and the Lost Levels suck, probably should never have been found. Is this a case of taking the PC version, working on it for consoles then porting it back to PC? Did id even handle this "port" or are Bethesda's lackys to blame?

how is this even a surprise to some?

from the getgo, the "remaster" graphic is for consoles only, since consoles back in Doom 3 days couldn't handle Ultra setting...now they can,

for PC, it's the same game with additional levels.

I was certainly hoping they would do SOMETHING to improve to the graphics in the PC version. Sure, it had an "ultra" setting, that looked way better than the consoles in 2004 but... that was 2004.

Whatever though. I still have Doom 3. I'll continue modding it.

I can confirm that there is no shadow from the shoulder mounted flashlight ...or armpit mouted flashlight if you play with a larger FOV. Some decals are missing too, no blood spatter on walls, no burn marks from plasma,at least this is the case for me. They did fix the annoying clicking sound when you walk though!

Is this a case of taking the PC version, working on it for consoles then porting it back to PC? Did id even handle this "port" or are Bethesda's lackys to blame? pelvist

I can confirm that there is no shadow from the shoulder mounted flashlight ...or armpit mouted flashlight if you play with a larger FOV. Some decals are missing too, no blood spatter on walls, no burn marks from plasma,at least this is the case for me. They did fix the annoying clicking sound when you walk though!

ah ok thanks. So basically the game is uglier than the 2004 version? What a joke.

After finally finding the cfg file, there are only a few graphical options to manual modify, none of which improve the textures or blur, and in addition the some of the changers that would make the game look better are overwritten by the game when it runs. I've discovered that antiscopic filtering is locked to only a measley 4x, and antialasing is locked to 4x as well. It also seems that the game runs at 1280 x 720 despite me setting the game to 1336 x 768 resolution.
