It'll help to understand the story wich is a big part of HL2,but you do not need it.

The story is mostly it's own entity, but the first one has a big part if you know what's going on.

AKA no, you don't need to play the first to enjoy the second.

I didn't play Half-Life. So when I started Half Life 2 I was a bit confused about the story. Best to take a look at wiki for a summary of the story in Half Life 1 so you're not lost.

I didn't like Half-Life 2 though. I found the game to be rather boring and repetitive.

I never played the first HL but I knew what the story was about so I was fine with playing HL2.

I can't wait until HL: Black Mesa is done.

It's not strictly necessary. Half-Life 2 stands alone so well that the plot makes sense in seclusion, but also in respect to Half-Life original. I played it before the original and it all made sense to me.

It is not needed, though as any sequel it will help to play its predecessor.

I really didnt get into pc gaming much when the first halflife was about and the second on I played the orange box on my xbox and kinda hated it. BUt saying that I didnt like L4D either on the xbox. For some reason I bought L4D with L4D2 for my pc and fell in love spending about 72hours in my first week. Obsessive I know.Valve games are far superior on the pc. I've got the orange box now for my pc after getting the HL2: LC for free and really enjoying that short level. Ive been playing HL2 now for a couple hours and its pretty good I jsut got the gravity gun.

I've enjoyed HL2 thoroughly without playing the first game first.

No, although, I wouldn't play either now. They are both pretty dated. The vehicle sections for HL2 for me make it crash and burn nowadays.

Hl2 is far from dated, it still plays amazingly well...HL is dated though, but still fun.

Not at all I dont think.

In my case I didnt beat the first one, and for the most part only saw it played alittle, but I did know who Gordon Freeman was.

Nope, you won't get some references, but that's pretty much it. It doesn't matter really if you skip the first one anyway. Play Half Life 2 now and Half Life 1 later.

No, but it's a crime against PC gaming not to play the original HL at least once. :x
