No, I'm very selective in what game I buy, infact the only game I will buy this year is left for dead. The games I buy usually last a very long time also, infact I have finally quit neverwinter nights ending my 4 year relationship with that game, and even now I still have world of warcraft to keep me going.
I'm probably not modern pc gamer though, I trail most modern gamers by like a year.
yes. and i don't see why the poll has to drag console into the discussion.
also, i'm tempted to think that most of those who said no aren't really spending their own money on the hobby
I payed 700 pounds for my PC. Games cost an average of 25. I buy alot of games.
When i bought a 360 it cost me close to 400 with pad etc. Games cost an average of 45. With the amount of games i bought i saved money on the PC overall. Not to mention PC games lasted me far longer.
I moved to australia a few months ago. I bought a PS3 here. It cost me $700, 2 games cost me over $200 and an extra pad another $70. Total $970. Thats about 485 pounds. Since then i have bought so many games on PS3, none of which i play much. I must have spent over $2000 on games.
I still play the games i bought in the uk on my PC plus new ones that cost about $10-$30 less than console games.
For me PC is far cheaper and even more so when you consider the use i get vs the money i have spent.
sorry for the spelling of Pounds rather than the symbol, this aussie keyboard has no pound sign lol.
Take into consideration the concept of value and put together Moding possibilities in it, and I think you have the best product value formula around. Every other system is a dumbed down version of what a PC experience can be.
If you loved a certain game, you can expect mods for infinitive replay value, and you can even Mod the game itself. I really enjoy the concept of mods and how powerful it can be. There is no match in product value such as this, in the gaming world
Anyway, also consider that the PC is much more than a media port. It (can be) is a powerfull creation tool
So no, I dont find PC gaming expensive
No,actualy i am gaming on PC because its CHEAPER yes you read it well.
GAMING ON PC IS CHEAPER than gaming on console. Why?
PS1 came out it was like 300$
PS2 came out 300$
PS3 came out 500$
___________
1100$
And thats just basic unit,GAMES are more EXPENCIVE on console, peripethals are more expencive and you mostly buy SEPERATE periphetals for each new console, not even mentioning HDTV
Well, the gaming machine is expensive compared to consoles. But PC games are so much more cheaper than console games, it compensates all the costs later.
I live in Estonia, and here the currencry is Kroon, 1 dollar equals like 10 Kroons. And every new console game here costs always 1000 Kroons, which is like 100 bucks. And every new PC game costs 700 Kroons max (70 bucks). Somehow it seems that Ubisoft's PC games tend to cost even less, I bought Vegas 2 from retail when it was just released for 50 bucks. Same goes with Far Cry 2, which you can pre-order for 50 bucks.
Worth every penny.RK-Mara
This.
Although parts here are way more expensive than parts in the States for example, I'd gladly pay up the extra $50-$100 for a new VGA, HD, RAM, CPU, Motherboard, Case, Power Suppy, etc... for each.
Games are cheaper, accessories are cheaper, internet is cheaper, free demos, lots of free games, free mods etc.
The initial outlay and upgrade for hardware is higher than consoles and the cheaper rest doesn't quite offset it unless you buy say 30+ games a year. But even if I only bought about 10, I still find PC gaming the much better experience.
PC gaming is not expensive, it only appears to be when compared to consoles. Judging the significant differences in what determines sale price, they shouldn't even be compared in the first place.
Although the machine itself is more expensive, it's useful for other things... and PC games tend to be cheaper.

yep pc games are $10 or $20 cheaper. Usually $49.99 or $39.99 for a new game.
Examples: CoD 4 was $49.99, Crysis Warhead is being sold for $39.99 says Crytek and I picked up Clear sky for $39.99
I just upgraded my 3 year old PC with a $120 graphics card and it can run all games including Crysis at ultra high with a decent FPS. Every once and a while a game will exceed the average computer and upgrades will need to be done, but if you had a decent rig to begin with it shouldn't be too expensive.
If you have to buy a whole new PC then you're definitely looking at a high expense, but I don't think that really ever needs to be done, considering you can just buy upgrades for it. If you don't know how to work on a PC, then you're def looking at a lot of money wasted.
i dont find it very expansive, because a ps2 is junk after the console release after the ps3 (no backwards compatability says i, 10 bucks right here). so a console is only good for 5 years at most before ur better off selling it or scrapping it. a pc can be upgraded over and over to never lose its pull. and im a simpleton player i dont aim on ever being able to play crysis or high req. games like that. (i have two sapphire ati radeon hd 2400 pro's ($50 vlaue ea.)) i set myself 2-3 months behind the pack and experience the games no one takes the time to explore because there too busy playing that next crysis or oblivion or what have you. for example i play soldier of fortune payback on my pc u can get it for $11 canadian right now its so underplayed but i love it too death.
so lock up my playstation, burn my 360, esd my wii, but you will never take my pc from me!
Last generation when I could pick up any system for less than the price of a budge video card, I suppose. This generation, where the prices haven't gone down at all, not at all. Even last generation, it ended up not being that cheap after I picked up the other two consoles. Between the three of them, it was more than I spent building my computer at the time. This generation, I've bought all three consoles a lot closer to launch, and in the case of the 360 and PS3, the more expensive version.
Games are generally cheaper for the PC, and I find I can usually scrounge enough parts out of my PC to build my next that it's really not that much more. If you're into buying the latest and greatest every year, or spend several thousand buying a pre-built gaming machine, I suppose that would be more expensive. But I often find the argument about needing to upgrade to be exaggerated. Especially with how fast the price drops on PC components. If you wait awhile, they'll be easily affordable.
In general, I don't think PC Gaming is too expensive, but maybe it's expensive compared to consoles. I haven't owned a console in almost three years so I'm not really sure.
Edit: I think comparing the cost of PC Gaming to consoles is unfair because who uses their PC only for gaming? As others have already pointed out, the PC can be used for a buttload of other things other than gaming.
Not really.
Good computer $800-1000 + $250 monitor = $1050-1250
Video card upgrade every other year - $150-250
$20-50 games. (New)
Consoles $200 (Xbox 360 Arcade) + HDTV $800 (Decent HDTV) = $1000
$60 games. (New)
Or Xbox 360 pro ($300) + good 19" monitor ( $220) + Vga cable ($40) + 5.1 X-540 speakers ($70)=$630
