Does F.E.A.R. have a lot of "shock" moments?

It has enough.

Strangly, sometimes fighting the AI scared the hell out me. Taking cover in dead silence all of a sudden a grenade lands at your feet and explodes. That scares the hell out of me.

Yeah.
You get a sense of paranoia and things happen when you least expect it.

There are tons of shock moments, but you're never actually in any danger when they happen. Check the game out, it's truly amazing.

Though there are some rare moments where they CAN get you killed, you should be able to tell when the moment comes.

I loved it, replayed it, and it was an awesome shooting experience.

EDIT: oh right forgot to add, the melee combat is also very fun in this game. Slide tackling soldiers and watch their bodies limp around was too much fun.

FEAR tends to do a good job with not presenting too many "AHHH Scary monster jumps in your face!" moments. Most of the time they create drama dy doing the exact opposite. The few times they do it on purpose, you're never really in danger. It'll be rare that you'll be hurt from them. Often times the shock moments come from the AI fighting you, like a frickin invisible ninja soldier running up to you and beating you to death.

Its not as scary as people make out, and I resent some of the reviews comparions to japanese horror films. Watch Ju-on The Grudge at night for the first time and you know what j-horror is really about :P

Sounds like you were scared (since you're asking that)? That's a good thing for a horror game, it makes it even better. So yea you should get it.

if FEAR does anything right, it is the firefights. Truly amazing. I found the enemies very smart; you'd run and hide, then when you pop out to shoot them where you think they should be, they arent there. So you stand there for three seconds (which seems like 3 minutes), then all of a sudden they rush through a door you forgot about.

As for horror-movie shock moments, there are quite a few but not too scary. Theyre predicitable. The bloody-hallway scenes are a little frightening but theres only thee or four of em

I don't think the "shock moments" happen often. The game is careful not to overdo it. After seeing a creepy little girl pop-up from nowhere several times, the novelty begins to lose its intended effect.

***POSSIBLE SPOILER***

F.E.A.R. was scary for the first hour of gameplay, before I realized that I would never in danger of dying during any of the paranormal events. Thankfully that changed around the last hour of the game, which is what entire game should have been like.

Yes, yes it does.

Though later down the track the scares become so predicatable and less well implemented, it begins to be kind of like Doom 3- lots of jump scares, however after half way they lose their effect.
