but, that's exactly what it means. The CPU's full potential won't be reached due to the GPU. That's a bottleneck.

Yes, you will have a bottleneck in lots of newer games. It's a rather unbalanced combination for a gaming rig.

I'd say so, games are much much more gpu dependent while cpu can take on generations of new graphics card before becoming outdated or bottlenecking. I really hate that word, I really do since is often times overstated, but it gets the message across. 6950 or 560ti 448 are good candidates for upgrade, Ill aim for at least these to go for (personally I either upgrade big or go home) and anything higher is even better.

Please...... you people have it backwards that i5 isnt being "bottlenecked" by that 4870. That 4870 is not the "bottleneck" in that system... no its the harddrive or even the system memory. If you want to be technical about "bottlenecking" As long as the cpu and gpu are receiving their data fluidly there's no bottlenecking. Now if you talking about that his 4870 is holding him back in gaming that's one thing but calling it a bottleneck is incorrect....

Hmmm I think you may have it backwards actually :P

Na, a bottleneck is something that limts a part or the whole system from performing normally. having a 4870 is not causing that i5 from not working normally. Now a real bottleneck would something like a Pentium 4 and a 4870 that P4 cant supply that gpu with enough data to perform normally

Yes, it's technically a bottleneck, and yes your cpu is able to handle data flow to much more powerful gpus, but if your games are playing smoothly at the resolution and settings you wish then what's the problem? If not, then invest in a more powerful video card and enjoy. :) I'd much rather see this type of a "bottleneck" than some of the stuff I've seen around here. wink wink......

A GTX 580 would be the bottleneck to a i7 2600k since the cpu can safely handle a faster or multiple gpu's before becoming the bottleneck.

A CPU can not be "bottlenecked" by a Graphics card just because the cpu is fast enough to handle more of a load from a gpu. However if the cpu cant supply the data fluidly then the cpu is an actaul bottleneck because then the cpu becomes overburdened and it affects the whole system from operating normally.

But I do see where you can think that the 4870 is a bottleneck because with gaming it is the weakest part between the two however its not really a true bottleneck since its not preventing the other part fromoperating the way its suppose too.

Yes it is. The i5 cannot reach it's full potential because the GPU isn't good enough. That's a bottleneck. The CPU isn't running as well as it could if it had a better GPU because the 4850 is not strong enough to play some games on max. That's a bottleneck. The GPU is stopping the CPU from performing as well as it could.

So running a cpu intensive app or game and gpu is the bottleneck in that gaming system will not allow the cpu from being fully used? Come on.... That's not what bottleneck means and every person in this thread is on the same page except you.

Just think about the term bottleneck, it is referring to a liquid holding apparatus with a narrow point that slows the flow of the liquid.

To transfer that over, a bottleneck in computer terms is the piece that is holding everything back from max performance. It isn't about the cpu running at full potential it is about your whole system.

with a 4850, it doesn't matter if he has an athlon II or a 1000 dollar i7 extreme edition, because the gpu is what is holding everything back, thus the bottlneck.

Your definition is wrong, please go look it up.

No it isnt becuase you can take two different high ended cpu's with the same low end gpu and know that the those cpus are not preventing that gpu from reaching its potential. Like a i5 2500k with a 8800GT vs a i7 720 with a 8800GT but yet the i5 is getting a higher framerate average does this mean that the i7 920 is an actual bottleneck to a 8800GT? No it does not.

Bottlenecks in hardware is when the data or information needs to wait to be processed in other words is when the hardware can't process information as fast as needs it . which means that the 4870 is not a bottleneck to that i5.....

The way he asked the question..... no a CPU cant bottleneck a GPU. Its just silly to even think that :P04dcarraher is pretty much spot on. But you may want to pair a better GPU is you want everything to be more balanced. But as it stands a GPU wont ever bottleneck a CPU or effect how it does its job.

We're talking about for gaming. Also, it's a 4850, not 4870. The CPU could perform better in games if it had a better GPU, therefore it is being bottlenecked. Yes, it's still working th eway it's supposed to, but not nearly as well as it could if it had a better GPU. It's a bottleneck for gaming. I think that's where the misunderstanding is. Technically you're right, the CPU is not dependent on the GPU in other programs, but we're talking strictly about gaming here.

This depends on many factors, first of all which application (aka game is being used). There would also need to be tests done to see if a 4850 prohibits full max usage of a i5 2500k in a CPU heavy game such as Skyrim/BF3/Shongun 2 etc. What can be said for definite however is that a 4850 and a i5 is not a balanced system for todays gaming because the i5 has more potential for allowing a more powerful GPU to reach full usage.

That's not what bottleneck means and every person in this thread is on the same page except you.

Just think about the term bottleneck, it is referring to a liquid holding apparatus with a narrow point that slows the flow of the liquid.

To transfer that over, a bottleneck in computer terms is the piece that is holding everything back from max performance. It isn't about the cpu running at full potential it is about your whole system.

with a 4850, it doesn't matter if he has an athlon II or a 1000 dollar i7 extreme edition, because the gpu is what is holding everything back, thus the bottlneck.

Your definition is wrong, please go look it up.

What if you had an i7 with integrated graphics or a really low end GPU like a 6250? Are the integrated graphics "bottlenecking" his system, or is it just a weak ass GPU?I think there is a difference.

I actually think the 04dcarraher guy is right even though everybody keeps argueing with him...

1) 04 keeps referring to the 4870 when it is actually the 4850 in question

1a) This brings his critical thinking into question especially since he is getting corrected and he keeps using the wrong card.

2) He is using the wrong definition of the word.

2a) There are multiple meaning words, meaning that you can apply the same word to different situations and they will actually mean different things.

2b) 04 is using the more basic non-specific meaning of the word, which is not the meaning used when referring to computer hardware.

3) In computer hardware a bottleneck is ONLY the slowest performing part that you have for that situation.

4) In the current generation, especially at higher resolutions the GPU is going to be the bottleneck 90% of the time. You see this when people run tests at super high resolutions, and whatever gpu you are testing gets the exact same frame rate no matter what CPU they are paired with.

So to sum up: 04 is wrong and keeps arguing, not over if there is a bottleneck or not, but the fact that a bottleneck can exist. Which it can, and there are hundreds of articles to back that up.

So to 04, you are the minority here, the onus is on you to prove your point, get us an article saying what you are saying or stop posting because you are seriously misinforming people who are actually trying to learn.

Are you Hurt? Just because I come here actually tell you there's a difference in a calling a part a bottleneck a "weaker part" and what it means to have an actual bottleneck for hardware.

Big whoop 4850 4870 whatever its still the same idea. As long as you learned that there is proper usage in the word bottleneck then just saying a certain item is just weaker. We are all here to help out and learn and I hope you learn the difference.

OD is right. And there's a difference between a bottleneck and having an outdated card. If he were to upgrade to say something like a 6950, that doesn't mean his 4850 was bottlenecking him. It means he upgraded to newer, faster tech. Same as people who upgraded from Core 2 Quad to the i5/i7 series and saw better performance. It doesn't mean their Core 2 Quad was bottlenecking them (unless they were running some insane GPU setup). It means they upgraded to faster, more modern tech.

That's exactly what it means. If it was holding you back, it was bottlenecking you. That is literally what bottleneck means. Next time you open up a beer, pour it out and take note of the fact that the "bottleneck" is restraining all the liquid from falling out at once.

No it does not mean a real bottleneck between the gpu and cpu :roll: just because its weaker does not mean its a bottleneck You sir are just using the basic definition of the word bottleneck and looking further into it. Again I'll re post what it actually means to have a bottleneck. Bottlenecks in hardware is when the data or information needs to wait to be processed in other words is when the hardware can't process information as fast as needs it . which means that the 4850 is not a bottleneck to that i5..... "when the hardware can't process information as fast as needs it " that's the key phrase.... The gpu is not causing the cpu to slow down at all which means NO BOTTLENECKING. Now is the gpu the slower part between the two yes but it does not mean an actual bottleneck. Thats the point.

What the TC has is not a bottleneck. The GPU is only limited by it's own potential.

This is a bottleneck:

Athlong 64 x2 5600 + (OC'ed to 3.15GHz) and dual 8800GTS 512MB cards in SLI.

You guys are wrong. The only thing a low end gpu can bottleneck is gaming when it comes to gaming. The cpu is working at its full potential with a low end gpu but a high end gpu cant work at its full potential with a low end cpu.

A 4850 is indeed a bottleneck when gaming, but it is not a bottleneck to the CPU in most other usage scenarios....

here something about OLD card AGP 2X Known as Voodoo5 6000 But the 3700A which only 100 exist in the world it got overclocked lol but it Running on E8400 Setup & I7 2600K Setup

while a GTX 285 with same system give 120,000+ so this should help to clear a idea of how a 4850 doesn't Break the CPU at all he could be running an Geforce MX 440 and he would just be limited to play game as Said Superclocked but it Clear an Video card that is in working condition with even no gpu Driver will never make the Any modern cpu unstable or making the cpu run slowly as some did think earlier :|

so to think someone think a HD4850 would make the cpu run slowly such as what happen when you game when you put like a Pentium 4 3.2Ghz with like GTX 580 or even more strong so it was misinformation and you guy did fight that lol took you guys forever to figure that out lol

Again, it can be considered a "bottleneck" in loose terms, but does the gpu actually slow the cpu down, the way a weak cpu would a gpu? No, it does not. Therefore there is no bottleneck in the sense that data transfer between the two subsets is impaired due to a lower performing component subsystem. Neither the cpu or gpu is waiting for data in this case. That is the key here. In a "typical bottleneck" scenario one subsystem has to wait for data and sits idle until it gets someting to do. That's the classic weak cpu/strong videocard scenario.
