I don't have much of a clue regarding speakers. My budget is around 30£. 2.1 speakers look the most appealing to me as I really wouldn't know where to put 5.1 speakers but would I really need a subwoofer or a bass i.e. the .1 bit? Excuse my ignorance! These sort of caught my eye as did these.

One thing I've noticed is that THX certified speakers have amazing sound. If you can find this cert, regardless of branding, you'll have a very nice sounding speaker.

Thanks for the advice but there seems to be an immediate hike in price when it comes to THX certified speakers. I am willing to go a td above 30£ but it seems these THX certified speakers start at 100£!

That's quite far from the truth. The THX certificate is rather useless, it just means the company paid money for the logo on their product box and that the speakers meet some minimum standards but it doesn't equal good sound. I see it more as a marketing gimmick. If you're going to game on them and want descent explosions etc one of the 2.1 sets is probably the best you're going to get within that budget. If you want them for music listening you should spend slightly more and get something like the Behringer MS16 2.0 speakers which can be had for 45 GBP. http://www.thomann.de/gb/behringer_ms16.htm They're supposed to be very good considering the small price tag.

Well you may think its a gimmick, but I've noticed a nice difference between comparable speakers with and without this certification. Granted, a nice set of Paradigms would be sweet with a connected amp or receiver, but that's out of the question for TC. And unless you're an audiophile you may not notice subtle differences anyway. To each their own I say. Those Behringer MS16 speakers do have some nice reviews though :) Grab them sure!

The Behringer MS16 speakers do look good but are 20£ more expensive than the Creative ones. I think I will just go for those if I have everybody's approval.

Looks like it, but more wattage does not mean better louder sound but the size of the speaker cone.

While I wouldn't normally recommend PCWorld due to their prices, they do have a few options around the £30 mark, and if there is one near you, will avoid the delivery costs - something you would need to add to the speakers from Scan.

LOGITECH Z323 2.1 PC Speakers - £34.99

30W RMS 2.1 speaker system, and while I don't know how reliable the reevoo rating is, it has 8.9/10 from over 100 user reviews. Price and expectations will obviously vary, but it is a well known brand and decent Wattage for the price.

Even managed to find a Creative 5.1 speaker system for just under £30 - CREATIVE A520 5.1 PC Speakers

You won't get good sounding speakers for £30.

You'd be better off looking on ebay for a hi-fi amp and some speakers.

Alternatively, headphones will give you far better sound for your money.

Whoops, forgot to update this topic. I ended up buying the Microlab M700 2.1 speaker system from Scan for 27.74£ and I absolutely love them. Thanks again for all the responses!

Thank you for your recommendation. I just wanted to say that i do get free delivery from Scan. That, along with their excellent, and very quick service, has made me quite the fan! Like I said, as a student, I wouldn't quite know what to do with a 5.1 speaker system, especially since my room is kind of messy, and I tend to move on an annual basis. Plus, I assume these speakers are wired, and I'll be damned if I have friends tripping over my speakers. The friends will heal any wounds they attain from tripping, my speakers, however, will not!

The speakers I got are more than adequate in my opinion. My happiness level coincides with the more I turn them up, and it gets loud! My friend/housemate told me to invest more in headphones as well, and I did that, but I wasn't about to go super cheap on the speakers (he recommended that I get 10£ speakers or something).

I have friends over to watch stuff every now and then so I was definitely going to get decent speakers. I did invest even more in some headphones/a headset, but when you wish to show friends something, passing it around doesn't sound very efficient.

Buy a stereo amp and some hi-fi speakers on ebay/car boot sale.

It will sound far better than any logitech set.
